Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to analyze the types of pathogens and their antibiotic resistance found in ocular infections over a five-year period at two hospitals in east China.
  • Out of 2727 ocular specimens collected, 827 yielded positive cultures, with bacterial strains (60.85%) being more prevalent than fungal strains (39.15%), and Gram-positive cocci emerging as the most common pathogens.
  • Notably, over 50% of Gram-positive cocci were resistant to fluoroquinolones, while multidrug resistance among bacteria showed a significant decrease over time.

While many studies have sought to explore the degree to which sarcopenia-related traits are associated with cognitive performance, these studies have yielded contradictory results without any clear indication of the causality of such relationships. In efforts to better understand associations between sarcopenia-related traits and cognitive ability, a series of multivariate linear regression assessments were carried out upon datasets derived through the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Of these, cognitive performance was assessed by the Digit Symbol Substitution Test (DDST), the Consortium to Establish a Registry for Alzheimer's Disease Immediate Recall Test (CERAD-IR), Delayed Recall Test (CERAD-DR) and Animal Fluency Test (AFT).

Article Synopsis
  • - Osteoporosis is a metabolic bone disease that leads to reduced bone formation and increased resorption, making the elderly more susceptible to pain and fractures.
  • - The study utilizes radiomics from CT images of the lumbar spine to detect osteoporosis in elderly patients by extracting features and applying various machine learning models, including random forests and support vector machines.
  • - The models show strong diagnostic performance, with the random forest and support vector machine both achieving around 0.9 accuracy, indicating that this method can effectively assist in diagnosing osteoporosis in the elderly.

Background: Nonrecurrent laryngeal nerve (NRLN) is a rare but significant anatomical variation in thyroid surgery, and lack of awareness of NRLN may lead to intraoperative injury. Here, we report a clinical case of NRLN discovered during endoscopic thyroid surgery via total areola approach in a 23-year-old female patient.

Case Presentation: A 23-year-old female patient presented with bilateral thyroid nodules for three years.

TOETVA: a single surgeon's learning curve and a case report of CASTLE thyroid tumor.

Langenbecks Arch Surg

October 2023

Department of Thyroid and Breast Surgery, Nantong City No 1 People's Hospital and Second Affiliated Hospital of Nantong University, Chongchuan District, No. 6, North Child Lane, Nantong, Jiangsu, China.

Background: Owing to the lack of visible scars, the transoral endoscopic thyroidectomy vestibular approach (TOETVA) offers superior aesthetic outcomes compared to conventional thyroidectomy. Carcinoma showing thymus-like differentiation (CASTLE) represents a rare thyroid gland neoplasm. This study aimed to explore the TOETVA learning curve and present a case report of CASTLE.

Background: Breast cancer (BC) ranks first in incidence among women, with approximately 2 million new cases per year. Therefore, it is essential to investigate emerging targets for BC patients' diagnosis and prognosis.

Methods: We analyzed gene expression data from 99 normal and 1,081 BC tissues in The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database.

CPSF6-mediated XBP1 3'UTR shortening attenuates cisplatin-induced ER stress and elevates chemo-resistance in lung adenocarcinoma.

Drug Resist Updat

May 2023

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, School of Medicine & Holistic Integrative Medicine, Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine, No.138 Xianlin Avenue, Nanjing 210023, Jiangsu, China. Electronic address:

Alternative polyadenylation (APA) is a widespread mechanism generating RNA molecules with alternative 3' ends. Herein, we discovered that TargetScan includes a novel XBP1 transcript with a longer 3' untranslated region (UTR) (XBP1-UL) than that included in NCBI. XBP1-UL exhibited a lowered level in blood samples from lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) patients and in those after DDP treatment.

March 2023

Department of Medical Oncology, Ren Ji Hospital, School of Medicine, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, No.160 Pujian Road, Pudong New District, Shanghai, 200127, China; Department of Oncology, Nantong City No. 1 People's Hospital and Second Affiliated Hospital of Nantong University, No. 666, Shengli Road, Nantong 226000, Jiangsu Province, China. Electronic address:

Aims: This study aims at investigating the role of a neighbor long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) of HDAC4 (LOC85009) in docetaxel (DTX) resistance of lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD).

Methods: RT-qPCR was used to analyze LOC85009 expression in DTX-resistant LUAD cells. In vitro and in vivo experiments were applied to detect the influence of LOC85009 on LUAD cell growth and xenograft tumor growth.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a disease involving the whole joint that seriously reduces the living standards of individuals. Traditional treatments include physical therapy, administration of anti-inflammatory and analgesic drugs and injection of glucocorticoids or hyaluronic acid into the joints. However, these methods have limited efficacy and it is difficult to reverse the progression of OA, therefore it is urgent to find new effective treatment methods.

Long intergenic noncoding RNA regulator of reprogramming (linc-ROR) is a novel long noncoding RNA that exhibits significant effects on cancer progression. This research presented that linc-ROR had a crucial part in promoting biological characteristics associated with worse prognosis in colon cancer. Bioinformatics analysis was performed to predict signaling pathways related to linc-ROR.

Bcl2-associated athanogene3 (BAG3) protein, mainly induced by stressful stimuli, has been confirmed to participate in apoptosis and autophagy. In recent studies, BAG3 has gradually become a key molecule in tumors. However, the role of BAG3 in the progression of lumbar facet joint osteoarthritis (FJOA) and whether it can regulate chondrocyte apoptosis and autophagy are still unknown.

Platelet-derived extracellular vesicles (PEVs), which are generated from the plasma membrane during platelet activation, may be involved in the inflammatory processes of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). The motility of RA fibroblast-like synoviocytes (RA-FLS) plays a key role in the development of synovial inflammation and joint erosion. However, the effects of PEVs on the motility of RA-FLS remain unclear.

Introduction: Infected pancreatic necrosis (IPN) and its related septic complications are the major causes of death in patients with acute necrotising pancreatitis (ANP). Therefore, the prevention of IPN is of great clinical value, and immunomodulatory therapy with thymosin alpha 1 may be beneficial. This study was designed to test the hypothesis that the administration of thymosin alpha 1 during the acute phase of ANP will result in a reduced incidence of IPN.

Background: In recent years, there have been many reports on the pregnancy outcomes of fresh blastocyst transfer (BT) and frozen-thawed BT, but the conclusions are controversial and incomplete. To compare the pregnancy outcomes, maternal complications and neonatal outcomes of fresh and frozen-thawed BT in the context of in vitro fertilization or intracytoplasmic sperm injection (IVF/ICSI) cycles, we conducted a meta-analysis.

Methods: A meta-analysis was conducted by searching the PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane Library databases through May 2020.
