The Krüppel like factor 6 (KLF6) gene encodes multiple protein isoforms derived from alternative mRNA splicing, most of which are intimately involved in hepatocarcinogenesis and tumor progression. Recent bioinformatics analysis shows that alternative mRNA splicing of the KLF6 gene produces around 16 alternatively spliced variants with divergent or even opposing functions. Intriguingly, the full-length KLF6 (KLF6-FL) is a tumor suppressor gene frequently inactivated in liver cancer, whereas KLF6 splice variant 1 (KLF6-SV1) is an oncogenic isoform with antagonistic function against KLF6-FL.

Objective: The study aimed to evaluate the ability of optical coherence tomography (OCT) to guide and identify pulp exposure using an erbium: yttrium-aluminum-garnet (Er:YAG) laser.
Background Data: The Er:YAG laser has been proven to be effective in ablating dental hard tissue and offers advantages, as there is none of the vibration and noise you get with conventional methods, but it has limitations in relation to the tactile feedback that would aid in identification of entry into the pulp chamber. Based on depth-resolved optical reflectivity, OCT technology has been developed to provide high-resolution, cross-sectional images of the internal structure of biological tissues.

Glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and its analog exendin (EX)-4 have been considered to promote β-cell growth and expansion. In the present, study we investigated the effect of GLP-1 on proliferative activity and cell cycle regulation in the pancreatic insulin-secreting β-cell line, INS-1, treated with intermittent high glucose. INS-1 cells were treated with normal glucose (5.

Objectives: Glucose fluctuations are both strong predictor of diabetic complications and crucial factor for beta cell damages. Here we investigated the effect of intermittent high glucose (IHG) on both cell apoptosis and proliferation activity in INS-1 cells and the potential mechanisms.
Methods: Cells were treated with normal glucose (5.

The purpose of this research was to develop novel nanoparticles (NPs) of star-like copolymer mannitol-functionalized poly(lactide)-vitamin E TPGS (M-PLA-TPGS) for paclitaxel delivery for prostate cancer treatment, and evaluate their therapeutic effects in prostate cancer cell line and animal model in comparison with the linear PLGA NPs and poly(lactide)-vitamin E TPGS (PLA-TPGS) NPs. The paclitaxel-loaded M-PLA-TPGS NPs, prepared by a modified nano-precipitation method, were observed by FESEM to be near-spherical shape with narrow size distribution. The drug-loaded NPs were further characterized in terms of size, surface charge, drug content, encapsulation efficiency and in vitro drug release.

Age-related dysfunction of the central auditory system, also known as central presbycusis, can affect speech perception and sound localization. Understanding the pathogenesis of central presbycusis will help to develop novel approaches to prevent or treat this disease. In this study, the mechanisms of central presbycusis were investigated using a mimetic aging rat model induced by chronic injection of D-galactose (D-Gal).

The aim of this study was to investigate the potential correlation between polymorphisms of the estrogen receptor (ER)-β gene (RsaI and AluI) and ethnic Han Chinese human idiopathic thin endometrium. A total of 120 patients with idiopathic thin endometrium and 120 sterility patients with normal endometrium thickness (controls) were included in the study. RsaI and AluI polymorphisms of the ER-β gene were analyzed with polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism.

Artemisinin, also termed qinghaosu, is extracted from the traditional Chinese medicine artemesia annua L. (the blue-green herb) in the early 1970s, which has been confirmed for effectively treating malaria. Additionally, emerging data prove that artemisinin exhibits anti-cancer effects against many types of cancers such as leukemia, melanoma, etc.

Purpose: To explore the feasibility of surgical management of cesarean scar ectopic pregnancy (CSEP) using a transvaginal approach.
Methods: Thirty-eight patients with CSEP presenting at the Shenzhen Nanshan People's hospital between January 2008 and May 2012 were reviewed in the study. Ten patients underwent uterine artery embolization, 13 patients underwent endoscopic CSEP removal in combination with chemotherapy and 15 received transvaginal surgical therapy (transvaginal group).
Background: The current paradigm for cord blood transplantation is that HLA matching and immune suppression are strictly required to prevent graft versus host disease (GVHD). Immunological arguments and historical examples have been made that the use of cord blood for non-hematopoietic activities such as growth factor production, stimulation of angiogenesis, and immune modulation may not require matching or immune suppression.
Methods: 114 patients suffering from non-hematopoietic degenerative conditions were treated with non-matched, allogeneic cord blood.

Background: Interferon has been widely used in the treatment of genital warts for its immunomodulatory, antiproliferative and antiviral properties. Currently, no evidence that interferon improves the complete response rate or reduces the recurrence rate of genital warts has been generally provided. The aim of this review is to assess, from randomized control trials (RCTs), the efficacy and safety of interferon in curing genital warts.
