To developing a multiple cancer types targeting drug delivery carrier system, a 28 amino acids from the VAR2CSA was synthesized as the placental CSA-binding peptide (plCSA-BP). Its specific binding ability to cancer cells was tested on cancer tissue array, and the results showed that plCSA-BP could bind to multiple cancer types. Then, the plCSA-BP was used as a guiding peptide to coat nanoparticles synthesized from N-2-HACC (CSA/HACC-NPs) which were loaded with prodigiosin (CSA/HACC-PNPs) or indocyanine green (CSA/HACC-INPs).

Distant metastasis is the primary cause of mortality in patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). Unveiling the mechanism of metastasis will aid in shedding light on the clinical therapeutic strategies in NPC treatment. The present study revealed that the expression of microRNA 141 (miR-141) was downregulated in NPC tumor cells, particularly in metastatic ones.

Forkhead box-O (FOXO) transcription factors have a fundamental role in the development and differentiation of immune cells. FOXO1 and FOXO3 are FOXO members that are structurally similar and bind to the same conserved consensus DNA sequences to induce transcription. FOXO1 has been studied in detail in the activation of dendritic cells (DCs), where it plays an important role through the regulation of target genes such as ICAM-1, CCR7, and the integrin αvβ3.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a kind of head-neck malignant tumor derived from the nasopharyngeal epithelium and is mainly prevalent in Southern China and Southeast Asia countries. Cisplatin (DDP) provides the first-line therapeutic administration in NPC patients. However, chemoresistance has been a main barrier and caused bad treatment outcome in NPC therapy.

Cleft palate is among the most common congenital disorders, and can be induced by exposure to all‑trans retinoic acid (atRA) during mice and human embryogenesis. However, the mechanism underlying the implication of atRA in the development of cleft palate has yet to be elucidated. In the present study, atRA administered by gavage resulted in formation of a cleft palate in 99% of treated C57BL/6 mice.

Human dental pulp cells (hDPCs) possess the capacity to differentiate into odontoblast-like cells and generate reparative dentin in response to exogenous stimuli or injury. Ten-eleven translocation 1 (TET1) is a novel DNA methyldioxygenase that plays an important role in the promotion of DNA demethylation and transcriptional regulation in several cell lines. However, the role of TET1 in the biological functions of hDPCs is unknown.

Phototherapy has been widely used in treating neonatal jaundice, but detailed metabonomic profiles of neonatal jaundice patients and response to phototherapy have not been characterized. Our aim was to depict the serum metabolic characteristics of neonatal jaundice patients relative to controls and changes in response to phototherapy. A (1) H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR)-based metabonomic approach was employed to study the metabolic profiling of serum from healthy infants (n = 25) and from infants with neonatal jaundice (n = 30) pre- and postphototherapy.

Oxidative damage to mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and cell apoptosis are heavily implicated in aging. Our previous study established a mimetic rat model of aging in the cochleae using D‑galactose (D‑gal), and revealed that chronic injection of D‑gal can increase oxidative stress and mtDNA common deletions (CD). The aim of the present study was to investigate the sources of reactive oxygen species and the occurrence of apoptosis in the cochleae of rats following 8 weeks of D‑gal exposure.

We explored the effects of icariin on the expression of estrogen receptor (ER), vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), and kinase insert domain receptor (KDR) in the endometrial cells of the thin endometrium. Primary endometrial cells were obtained and divided into a blank control group, a high-, a middle-, and a low-dose icariin groups, as well as an estrogen treatment group to undergo cellular identification by immunocytochemistry. The expression levels of ER, VEGF, and its receptor were estimated by western blotting.

Recently, the long non-coding RNA (lncRNA) H19 has been identified as an oncogenic gene in multiple cancer types and elevated expression of H19 was tightly linked to tumorigenesis and cancer progression. However, the molecular basis for this observation has not been characterized in colorectal cancer (CRC) especially during epithelial to mesenchymal transition (EMT) progression. In our studies, H19 was characterized as a novel regulator of EMT in CRC.

This study was designed to identify and quantify the different proteins expression levels in ankylosing spondylitis (AS) and to explore the pathogenesis of AS. We performed isobaric tags for relative and absolute quantitation (iTRAQ) coupled with multiple chromatographic fractionation and tandem mass spectrometry to detect the proteins profiling in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from AS patients and healthy controls. Mascot software and the International Protein Index and the Gene Ontology (GO) database were used to conduct the bioinformatics analysis.

To develop optimal therapeutics is one of the hotspots in both clinical and basic melanoma studies. Previous studies indicate that fibroblast growth factors (b-FGF/FGF-2), an angiogenesis inducer beyond VEGF, might be a potential drug target in melanoma. As a novel anti-angiogenesis peptide drug, Endostar has shown promising therapeutic efficacy in non-small cell lung cancer.

Aging has been associated with oxidative stress and the accumulation of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) mutation. The previous study has established a mimetic rat model of aging using D-galactose (D-gal) and revealed that chronic injection of D-gal can increase NADPH oxidase (NOX)-dependent oxidative stress, mitochondrial damage and apoptosis in the peripheral auditory system. However, the effects of NOXs in the central auditory system (CAS) were still obscure.

Chronic administration of D‑galactose (D‑gal) is a useful method for establishing a model of natural aging in the auditory system. Previous studies have demonstrated that NADPH oxidases (NOXs) may be an important source of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in the peripheral auditory system (PAS) and cause an increase in mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) common deletion (CD) levels in the PAS and central auditory system (CAS) of rats with D‑gal‑induced aging. However, the source of the ROS in the CAS and the mechanisms of age‑related hearing loss (ARHL) have yet to be elucidated.

Background: Growth differentiation factor-15 (GDF-15) is a divergent member of transforming growth factor-beta super family. Under physiological states, it is weakly expressed in most tissues, but it is elevated in impaired kidney function. High concentrations of GDF-15 have been found in some haemoglobinopathies associated with suppressed concentration of hepcidin and iron overload.

Background: Transverse myelitis (TM) is a relatively infrequent but severe complication in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Owing to its rarity and unfavorable outcome, we investigated its general features on MRI and incidence in the context of lupus activity, to facilitate early recognition and treatment.
Methods: We report a case of a young man with clinically inactive lupus nephritis but who presented with a sudden attack of myelitis.
