Jpn J Radiol

December 2024

Department of Radiology, Graduate School of Medical and Dental Sciences, Kagoshima University, 8-35-1 Sakuragaoka, Kagoshima, 890-8544, Japan.

Objectives: This study evaluates the effectiveness of machine learning (ML) models that incorporate clinical and 2-deoxy-2-[F]fluoro-D-glucose ([F]-FDG)-positron emission tomography (PET)-radiomic features for predicting outcomes in gallbladder cancer patients.

Materials And Methods: The study analyzed 52 gallbladder cancer patients who underwent pre-treatment [F]-FDG-PET/CT scans between January 2011 and December 2021. Twenty-seven patients were assigned to the training cohort between January 2011 and January 2018, and the data randomly split into training (70%) and validation (30%) sets.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study evaluated factors impacting the effectiveness of second-generation colon capsule endoscopy (CCE) in diagnosing colorectal issues, focusing on patient demographics, cleansing methods, and detection rates of polyps or tumors.
  • - Among 1,006 patients across 44 Japanese hospitals, findings revealed that younger age, male sex, and proper preparation significantly improved the success of CCE, with an overall detection rate of around 89-92% for larger colorectal tumors.
  • - CCE had a low retention rate and was generally well-accepted, with 63% of patients preferring CCE for future colonoscopies, reinforcing its safety and effectiveness when bowel preparation is adequate.

Purpose: To examine the usefulness of semi-quantitative analysis using the standardized uptake value (SUV) of iodine-123 metaiodobenzylguanidine ([I]-MIBG) for predicting metastatic potential in patients with pheochromocytoma (PHEO) and paraganglioma (PGL).

Procedures: This study included 18 PHEO and 2 PGL patients. [I]-MIBG visibility and SUV-related parameters (SUVmax, SUVmean, tumor volume of [I]-MIBG uptake [TV_MIBG], and total lesion [I]-MIBG uptake) were compared with the pathological grading obtained using the Pheochromocytoma of the Adrenal Gland Scaled Score (PASS) and the Grading System for Adrenal Pheochromocytoma and Paraganglioma (GAPP), which are used to predict metastatic potential.

Background: Polymyxin-B direct hemoperfusion (PMX-DHP) is an endotoxin adsorption column-based blood purification therapy. Since one of the most potent effects of PMX-DHP is blood pressure elevations, it may be the most effective when it is introduced at the time when the need for vasopressors is the greatest, which, in turn, may reduce mortality.

Methods: A multicenter retrospective study was conducted at 24 ICUs in Japan.

Objectives: To develop and identify machine learning (ML) models using pretreatment 2-deoxy-2-[F]fluoro-D-glucose ([F]-FDG)-positron emission tomography (PET)-based radiomic features to differentiate benign from malignant parotid gland diseases (PGDs).

Materials And Methods: This retrospective study included 62 patients with 63 PGDs who underwent pretreatment [F]-FDG-PET/computed tomography (CT). The lesions were assigned to the training (n = 44) and testing (n = 19) cohorts.

Background: Although robotic surgery is becoming more widespread worldwide, it is still in its infancy. This study aimed to confirm the safety and feasibility of the induction of robotic-assisted gastric surgery at a local hospital.

Methods: For five years, between 2016 and 2020, 42 laparoscopic and 71 robotic distal gastrectomies were performed at the same institution.

Background: The prognosis of chronic limb-threatening ischemia (CLTI) is poor, with an expected life expectancy of 2 or more years, which significantly influences treatment decisions. However, death may occur at the early stages of treatment for wound healing, and aggressive treatment may limit the quality of life of such patients. In patients with CLTI undergoing endovascular therapy (EVT), the Wound, Ischemia, and foot Infection (WIfI) clinical stage, male sex, older age, non-ambulatory status, low body mass index, and dialysis have been reported as predictors of mortality risk.

The anti-programmed cell death-1 (PD-1) antibody nivolumab has been shown to significantly prolong the survival of patients with unresectable advanced or recurrent gastric cancer (AGC). However, immune-related adverse events (irAEs), which show different profiles from those of cytotoxic agents or conventional molecular-targeted drugs including tyrosine kinase inhibitors, have been reported. Remitting seronegative symmetrical synovitis with pitting edema (RS3PE) is a rare autoimmune disorder with acute-onset, rheumatoid factor-negative, symmetric synovitis associated with limb edema observed in elderly persons.

Pain originating in the sacroiliac joint (SIJ) is a contributor to chronic lower back pain. Studies on minimally invasive SIJ fusion for chronic pain have been performed in Western populations. Given the shorter stature of Asian populations compared with Western populations, questions can be raised regarding the suitability of the procedure in Asian patients.

Article Synopsis
  • Cancer-associated thrombosis (CAT) is a frequent issue in cancer patients, and the Khorana Risk Score (KRS) is not adequately effective for assessing CAT risk.
  • A new scoring system called the Kagoshima-DVT score (KDS) was developed to predict preoperative deep vein thrombosis (DVT) based on various risk factors, including age, sex, and specific health conditions.
  • A study involving 250 gastrointestinal cancer patients showed that the KDS was better than the KRS in predicting CAT, with a higher incidence of CAT in higher-risk groups according to the KDS.

Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by the presence of at least 100 adenomatous polyps in the colon and rectum. The risk of upper gastrointestinal tumors is relatively high in patients with FAP, but a case of triple cancers has not been reported in the literature. We herein report a case of metachronous triple cancers of the stomach, duodenum and rectum in a patient with FAP.

Cases of delayed colo-anal anastomosis (DCAA) are currently reported instead of the colo-anal anastomosis with a protective loop ileostomy for rectal cancer. Post-operative colonic ischemia is considered as one of the serious complications of colorectal resection. Although indication of DCAA should be carefully selected, we experienced a case of post-operative stenosis caused by colonic ischemia after low anterior resection for rectal cancer, followed by this procedure.

  • Large tumors in a narrow pelvis can complicate their removal.
  • The text discusses a case where robotic-assisted laparoscopic surgery was used to excise the rectal duplication cysts effectively.

Evaluating the Khorana risk score of gastrointestinal cancer patients during initial chemotherapy as a predictor of patient mortality: A retrospective study.

J Cardiol

May 2022

Department of Cardiovascular Medicine and Hypertension, Graduate School of Medical and Dental Sciences, Kagoshima University, 8-35-1 Sakuragaoka, Kagoshima City, Kagoshima, Japan; Department of Prevention and Analysis of Cardiovascular Diseases, Graduate School of Medical and Dental Sciences, Kagoshima University, Kagoshima City, Kagoshima, Japan.

Background: The Khorana risk score (KRS) has been recommended for predicting the incidence of cancer-associated thrombosis (CAT). However, it has been reported KRS was not useful in predicting CAT, but rather in predicting death by setting high scores for the primary tumor site or a low prevalence of severe obesity.

Methods: A total of 260 consecutive patients with no history of thrombosis and who started initial chemotherapy for gastrointestinal cancer from January 2017 to December 2018 at our hospital were divided into three groups according to KRS; they were observed until December 2019 [122 patients (46.

A rare case of bleeding from the duodenal mucosa due to arteriovenous malformation of the pancreatic head is reported. Caution needs to be observed, then excision may be necessary since noninvasive treatment such as coil embolization is not enough for complete hemostasis when patient suddenly decompensates.
