Confined Space Dual-Type Quantum Dots for High-Rate Electrochemical Energy Storage.

Adv Mater

July 2024

Nanotechnology Center, School of Fashion and Textiles, The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, Hung Hom, Kowloon, Hong Kong, 999077, P. R. China.

Owing to the quantum size effect and high redox activity, quantum dots (QDs) play very essential roles toward electrochemical energy storage. However, it is very difficult to obtain different types and uniformly dispersed high-active QDs in a stable conductive microenvironment, because QDs prepared by traditional methods are mostly dissolved in solution or loaded on the surface of other semiconductors. Herein, dual-type semiconductor QDs (CoS and CdS) are skillfully constructed within the interlayer of ultrathin-layered double hydroxides.

Tailoring amorphous boron nitride for high-performance two-dimensional electronics.

Nat Commun

May 2024

Department of Materials Science and Engineering, The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, PA, 16802, USA.

Two-dimensional (2D) materials have garnered significant attention in recent years due to their atomically thin structure and unique electronic and optoelectronic properties. To harness their full potential for applications in next-generation electronics and photonics, precise control over the dielectric environment surrounding the 2D material is critical. The lack of nucleation sites on 2D surfaces to form thin, uniform dielectric layers often leads to interfacial defects that degrade the device performance, posing a major roadblock in the realization of 2D-based devices.

Reducing Effective System Dimensionality with Long-Range Collective Dipole-Dipole Interactions.

Phys Rev Lett

April 2024

Elmore Family School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana 47907, USA.

Dimensionality plays a crucial role in long-range dipole-dipole interactions (DDIs). We demonstrate that a resonant nanophotonic structure modifies the apparent dimensionality in an interacting ensemble of emitters, as revealed by population decay dynamics. Our measurements on a dense ensemble of interacting quantum emitters in a resonant nanophotonic structure with long-range DDIs reveal an effective dimensionality reduction to d[over ¯]=2.

A series of naphtho[1,8-ef]isoindole-7,8,10(9H)-trione derivatives as novel theranostic agents for photodynamic therapy and multi-subcellular organelles localization were designed and synthesized. Most of them possess moderate fluorescence quantum yield and long wavelength absorption simultaneously, which made them possible for dual effects of imaging and therapy. Notably, compounds 7 b and 7 d exhibited significant light-toxicity but slight dark-toxicity.

In this study, a one-pot synthesis of a molybdenum diselenide/nitrogen-doped graphene oxide (MoSe/NGO) composite was demonstrated and used for the fabrication of an electrochemical pH sensor. The MoSe/NGO composite was characterized using powder X-ray diffraction, infrared spectroscopy, Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller analysis. The electrochemical behavior at different pH values was determined by recording the open-circuit potential.

Metal-mediated base pairing of DNA has been a topic of extensive research spanning over more than four decades. Precise positioning of a single metal ion by predetermining the DNA sequence, as well as improved conductivity offered by the ions, make these structures interesting candidates in the context of using DNA in nanotechnology. Here, we report the formation and characterization of conjugates of long (kilo bases) homoguanine DNA strands with silver ions.

Enhancing Glucose Biosensing with Graphene Oxide and Ferrocene-Modified Linear Poly(ethylenimine).

Biosensors (Basel)

March 2024

School of Chemistry, Institute of Science, Suranaree University of Technology, 111 University Ave., Nakhon Ratchasima 30000, Thailand.

We designed and optimized a glucose biosensor system based on a screen-printed electrode modified with the NAD-GDH enzyme. To enhance the electroactive surface area and improve the electron transfer efficiency, we introduced graphene oxide (GO) and ferrocene-modified linear poly(ethylenimine) (LPEI-Fc) onto the biosensor surface. This strategic modification exploits the electrostatic interaction between graphene oxide, which possesses a negative charge, and LPEI-Fc, which is positively charged.

In this study, the interplay between the structural complexity, microstructure, and mechanical properties of calcium phosphates (CaPs) derived from fish bones, prepared at various calcination temperatures, and their corresponding sintered ceramics was explored. Fourier-transform infrared analysis revealed that the calcined powders primarily consisted of hydroxyapatite (HAp) and carbonated calcium hydroxyapatite, with an increasing concentration of Mg-substituted β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP) as the calcination temperature was increased. X-ray diffraction patterns showed enhanced sharpness of the peaks at higher temperatures, indicating a larger crystallite size and improved crystallinity.

Orthopedic device-related infection (ODRI) poses a significant threat to patients with titanium-based implants. The challenge lies in developing antibacterial surfaces that preserve the bulk mechanical properties of titanium implants while exhibiting characteristics similar to bone tissue. In response, we present a two-step approach: silver nanoparticle (AgNP) coating followed by selective laser-assisted surface alloying on commonly used titanium alumina vanadium (TiAl6V4) implant surfaces.

School of Mechanical Engineering, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana 47907, United States.

Dynamic tuning of thermal transport in solids is scientifically intriguing with wide applications for thermal transport control in electronic devices. In this work, we demonstrate a thermal transistor, a device in which heat flow can be regulated using external control, realized in a topological insulator (TI) through the topological surface states. The tuning of thermal transport is achieved by using optical gating of a thin dielectric layer deposited on the TI film.

Wastewater-based surveillance (WBS) has gained attention as a strategy to monitor and provide an early warning for disease outbreaks. Here, we applied an isothermal gene amplification technique, reverse-transcription loop-mediated isothermal amplification (RT-LAMP), coupled with nanopore sequencing (LAMPore) as a means to detect SARS-CoV-2. Specifically, we combined barcoding using both an RT-LAMP primer and the nanopore rapid barcoding kit to achieve highly multiplexed detection of SARS-CoV-2 in wastewater.

Transition metals of Pt and Pd on the surface of topological insulator Bi2Se3.

J Chem Phys

April 2024

Department of Physics and Astronomy, Purdue University, West Lafayette, Indiana 47907, USA.

Transition metal catalysts supported on topological insulators are predicted to show improved catalytic properties due to the presence of topological surface states, which may float up to the catalysts and provide robust electron transfer. However, experimental studies of surface structures and corresponding catalytic properties of transition metal/topological insulator heterostructures have not been demonstrated so far. Here, we report the structures, chemical states, and adsorption behaviors of two conventional transition metal catalysts, Pt and Pd, on the surface of Bi2Se3, a common topological insulator material.

May 2024

Department of Chemistry, University of Dhaka, Dhaka 1000, Bangladesh; Dhaka University Nanotechnology Center (DUNC), University of Dhaka, Dhaka 1000, Bangladesh. Electronic address:

The dissolution of cellulose in double salt ionic liquids (DSILs) was studied in detail and compared with the dissolution in individual constituent ionic liquids (ILs). The DSILs, [Cmim](CHCO)Cl (x is the mole fraction of the single component ILs), were synthesized using acetate and chloride salts of 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium. These DSILs were then used for the investigation of the solubility of cellulose in the whole mole fraction range.
