Charles D. Davidson School of Chemical Engineering, Purdue University, 480 W. Stadium Ave, West Lafayette, IN, 47907, USA.

Radical chemistries have attracted burgeoning attention due to their intriguing technological applications in organic electronics, optoelectronics, and magneto-responsive systems. However, the potential of these magnetically active glassy polymers to transport spin-selective currents has not been demonstrated. Here, the spin-transport characteristics of the radical polymer poly(4-glycidyloxy-2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl) (PTEO) allow for sustained spin-selective currents when incorporated into typical device geometries with magnetically polarized electrodes.

Voltage-Controlled Synthesis of Higher Harmonics in Hybrid Josephson Junction Circuits.

Phys Rev Lett

November 2024

Center for Quantum Devices, Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen, 2100 Copenhagen, Denmark.

We report measurements of the current-phase relation of two voltage-controlled semiconductor-superconductor hybrid Josephson junctions (JJs) in series. The two hybrid junctions behave similar to a single-mode JJ with effective transparency determined by the ratio of Josephson coupling strengths of the two junctions. Gate-voltage control of Josephson coupling (measured from switching currents) allows tuning of the harmonic content from sinusoidal, for asymmetric tuning, to highly nonsinusoidal, for symmetric tuning.

Department of Biochemistry, Faculty of Science, Mahidol University, Rama VI Rd, Bangkok, 10400, Thailand.

In shrimp aquaculture, white spot syndrome virus (WSSV) infections severely impact production. Previous research highlighted the crucial role of the Penaeus monodon Rab7 (PmRab7) protein in WSSV entry, specifically its interaction with the viral envelope protein VP28. PmRab7 exists in two conformations: GDP-bound (inactive) and GTP-bound (active).

Calcium phosphate (CaP) is a widely used biocompatible and bioactive material for bone tissue engineering due to its similarity to the mineral component of natural bone. Amorphous calcium phosphate is a highly reactive form of CaP that can undergo a phase transformation into a more stable crystalline phase, making it an attractive candidate for bone regeneration applications. However, amorphous CaP is highly unstable in aqueous solutions, which limits its use in practical applications.

Article Synopsis
  • Complex oxide thin films are essential for various electronic and optical devices, typically requiring high-quality single crystalline substrates like SrTiO (STO) for growth.
  • Recent advancements allow for the transfer of these films as free-standing structures, enabling the integration of complex oxides into other devices and promoting the recycling of the original substrates for cost-effective and sustainable production.
  • The study reveals that recycled STO substrates can influence the microstructure and properties of subsequently grown oxide films, potentially enhancing their characteristics, as seen with improved ferromagnetic responses in yttrium iron garnet films when grown on recycled STO compared to pristine substrates.

Non-invasive measurement of wall shear stress in microfluidic chip for osteoblast cell culture using improved depth estimation of defocus particle tracking method.

Biomicrofluidics

September 2024

Chakri Naruebodindra Medical Institute, Faculty of Medicine Ramathibodi Hospital, Mahidol University, 111 Suwannabhumi Canal Rd, Bang Pla, Bang Phli District, Samut Prakan 10540, Thailand.

The development of a non-invasive method for measuring the internal fluid behavior and dynamics of microchannels in microfluidics poses critical challenges to biological research, such as understanding the impact of wall shear stress (WSS) in the growth of a bone-forming osteoblast. This study used the General Defocus Particle Tracking (GDPT) technique to develop a non-invasive method for quantifying the fluid velocity profile and calculated the WSS within a microfluidic chip. The GDPT estimates particle motion in a three-dimensional space by analyzing two-dimensional images and video captured using a single camera.

Despite the outstanding electric properties and cost-effectiveness of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) and its derivatives, their performance as hole transport layer (HTL) materials in conventional perovskite solar cells (PSCs) has lagged behind that of widely used spirobifluorene-based molecules or poly(triaryl amine). This gap is mainly from their poor solubility and energy alignment mismatch. In this work, the design and synthesis of a pyrrole-modified HTL (PPr) based on 3,4-propylenedioxythiophene (ProDOT) are presented for efficient and stable PSCs.

The vast repository of van der Waals (vdW) materials supporting polaritons offers numerous possibilities to tailor electromagnetic waves at the nanoscale. The development of twistoptics-the modulation of the optical properties by twisting stacks of vdW materials-enables directional propagation of phonon polaritons (PhPs) along a single spatial direction, known as canalization. Here we demonstrate a complementary type of directional propagation of polaritons by reporting the visualization of unidirectional ray polaritons (URPs).

In this article, we present the first demonstration of a distance-based paper analytical device (dPAD) for uric acid quantification in human urine samples with instrument-free readout and user-friendliness for the rapid diagnosis and prognosis of various related diseases. By employing gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) as a peroxidase-like nanozyme, our proposed technique eliminates the utilization of horseradish peroxidase (HRP), making the device cost-effective and stable. In our dPAD, uric acid in the sample is oxidized by the uricase enzyme and subsequently catalysed with AuNPs in the sample zone, generating hydroxyl radicals (˙OH).

The process of removing sulfur compounds and aromatic compounds to produce clean fuel is an important and effective contribution to the processes of mitigating and adapting to climate change. In contrast, it is necessary to find an innovative way to remove sulfur and carcinogenic aromatic compounds because clean, low-sulfur diesel is commonly used in all countries of the world at the present time. Therefore, in this work, we have studied the effect of the microwave radiation power and the irradiation time with the use of more than one type of organic solvent; methanol, acetonitrile and ethyl acetoacetate; as an extractant and solvent to feed ratio impact on the removal of sulfur and aromatic compounds of a real diesel fuel feed which has 450 ppm sulfur content and 16 wt% aromatic Content.
