Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) employing a single active layer potentially offer a number of benefits compared to multilayer devices; reduced number of materials and deposition steps, potential for solution processing, and reduced operating voltage due to the absence of heterojunctions. However, for single-layer OLEDs to achieve efficiencies approaching those of multilayer devices, balanced charge transport is a prerequisite. This requirement excludes many efficient emitters based on thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) that exhibit electron trapping, such as the green-emitting bis(4-(9,9-dimethylacridin-10(9H)-yl)phenyl)methanone (DMAC-BP).

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Minnesota, Minneapolis, MN, 55455, USA.

Anisotropic planar polaritons - hybrid electromagnetic modes mediated by phonons, plasmons, or excitons - in biaxial two-dimensional (2D) van der Waals crystals have attracted significant attention due to their fundamental physics and potential nanophotonic applications. In this Perspective, we review the properties of planar hyperbolic polaritons and the variety of methods that can be used to experimentally tune them. We argue that such natural, planar hyperbolic media should be fairly common in biaxial and uniaxial 2D and 1D van der Waals crystals, and identify the untapped opportunities they could enable for functional (i.

A comparison between the physical characteristics of graphite ultrafine particles and the properties of graphite blocks prepared from graphite scrap using bead and conventional ball milling techniques is presented. Industrial-scale bead milling was used to prepare graphite scrap with an initial particle size of 24 μm in the ultrafine range of <10 μm. Bead milling can significantly reduce the production time of ultrafine graphite from graphite scrap from 72 h by ball milling to 10 min.

Ultrasmall ATP-Coated Gold Nanoparticles Specifically Bind to Non-Hybridized Regions in DNA.

Nanomaterials (Basel)

December 2023

Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, George S. Wise Faculty of Life Sciences and Nanotechnology Center, Tel Aviv University, Ramat Aviv, Tel Aviv 69978, Israel.

Here we report the synthesis of ultrasmall (2 nm in diameter) ATP-coated gold nanoparticles, ATP-NPs. ATP-NPs can be enlarged in a predictable manner by the surface-catalyzed reduction of gold ions with ascorbate, yielding uniform gold nanoparticles ranging in size from 2 to 5 nm in diameter. Using atomic force microscopy (AFM), we demonstrate that ATP-NPs can efficiently and selectively bind to a short non-hybridized 5A/5A region (composed of a 5A-nucleotide on each strand of the double helix) inserted into a circular double-stranded plasmid, Puc19.

Prompt Electronic Discrimination of Gas Molecules by Self-Heating Temperature Modulation.

ACS Sens

January 2024

Anhui Provincial Key Laboratory of Photonic Devices and Materials, Anhui Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics, and Key Lab of Photovoltaic and Energy Conservation Materials, Hefei Institutes of Physical Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Hefei 230031, China.

Though considerable progress has been achieved on gas molecule recognition by electronic nose (e-nose) comprised of nonselective (metal oxide) semiconductor chemiresistors, extracting adequate molecular features within short time (<1 s) remains a big obstacle, which hinders the emerging e-nose applications in lethal or explosive gas warning. Herein, by virtue of the ultrafast (∼20 μs) thermal relaxation time of self-heated WO-based chemiresistors fabricated via oblique angle deposition, instead of external heating, self-heating temperature modulation has been proposed to generate sufficient electrical response features. Accurate discrimination of 12 gases (including 3 xylene isomers with the same function group and molecular weight) has been readily achieved within 0.

In the realm of cancer therapy and treatment of bacterial infection, photothermal therapy (PTT) stands out as a potential strategy. The challenge, however, is to create photothermal agents that can perform both imaging and PTT, a so-called theranostic agent. Photothermal agents that absorb and emit in the near-infrared region (750-900 nm) have recently received a lot of attention due to the extensive penetration of NIR light in biological tissues.

The Josephson junction (JJ) is an essential element of superconducting (SC) devices for both fundamental and applied physics. The short-range coherent coupling of two adjacent JJs forms Andreev molecule states (AMSs), which provide a new ingredient to engineer exotic SC phenomena such as topological SC states and Andreev qubits. Here we provide tunneling spectroscopy measurements on a device consisting of two electrically controllable planar JJs sharing a single SC electrode.

A Josephson junction (JJ) is a key device for developing superconducting circuits, wherein a supercurrent in the JJ is controlled by the phase difference between the two superconducting electrodes. When two JJs sharing one superconducting electrode are coherently coupled and form the Andreev molecules, a supercurrent of one JJ is expected to be nonlocally controlled by the phase difference of another JJ. Here, we evaluate the supercurrent in one of the coupled two JJs as a function of local and nonlocal phase differences.
