Encapsulin nanocompartments loaded with dedicated cargo proteins via unique targeting peptides, play a key role in stress resistance, iron storage and natural product biosynthesis. Mmp1 and cysteine desulfurase (Enc-CD) have been identified as the most abundant representatives of family 2 encapsulin systems. However, the molecular assembly, catalytic mechanism, and physiological functions of the Mmp1 encapsulin system have not been studied in detail.

Background: Obesity and insulin resistance (IR) may be risk factors for thyroid disease, but there is no clinical-based consensus on this topic. Therefore, this study aims to evaluate the associations between the triglyceride-glucose index (TyG) and its derivatives and Hashimoto thyroiditis (HT) in type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) patients, and explore the relationships between the central obesity indicators and HT risk to provide a reliable basis for the early prevention of HT.
Methods: A total of 1071 T2DM patients aged ≥ 20 years were selected from a tertiary hospital in Tianjin, all of them had normal thyroid function (including free triiodothyronine, free thyroxine, total triiodothyronine, total thyroxine, and thyroid-stimulating hormone).

The cRGD peptide surface coating strategy for photothermal therapy nanoplatforms shows great promise in developing safe and effective cancer therapies. However, the precise intracellular mechanisms of these platforms remain unclear due to the complexity of intracellular trafficking and nano-bio interactions. This study investigates the nano-bio interactions of BiSe nanofoams, a representative photothermal therapy nanoplatform, coated with cRGD peptide in cancer cells, focusing on endocytosis, exocytosis, and cellular trafficking.

In response to the increasingly severe issue of plastic waste, biodegradable plastics have garnered extensive attention as a potential alternative to traditional plastics. Among these materials, biodegradable plastics hold a dominant position. The objective of this study was to assess the environmental risks of five commercially available biodegradable plastics: polyglycolic acid (PGA), polylactic acid (PLA), poly(butylene succinate) (PBS), poly(butylene carbonate) (PBC), and poly(butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) (PBAT).

Appropriate carbon source addition can save operational costs and reduce surplus sludge yield in the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP). However, the link between carbon source and surplus sludge yield remains neglected although machine learning (ML) has become a powerful tool for WWTP, and is a challenge due to more complex multidimensional pattern recognition. Herein, weighted average ensemble strategy was conducted to assemble multiple diverse basic models to obtain better prediction capability to optimize carbon source addition (Model-1) and further control surplus sludge yield (Model-2).

Graphene quantum dot (GQD), as one of the smallest graphene nanomaterials (GNMs), has the potential to be widely used due to its excellent fluorescence properties, hydrophilicity, and good biocompatibility. GQD remaining in water will generate DBPs when entering the disinfection process, and whether the generation mechanism and influencing factors are similar to those of other GNMs has not been proven and thoroughly investigated. In this study, the total amount, effect, and mechanism of DBPs formation from GQD chlorination were investigated and compared with graphene oxide (GO) and graphene.

Extended-synaptotagmins (E-Syts) are proteins located on the endoplasmic reticulum (ER) that tether the ER to the plasma membrane (PM) and regulate their lipid homeostasis via its lipid transfer module, the synaptotagmin-like mitochondrial lipid-binding protein (SMP) domain. Here, we describe in vitro DNA nanostructure-assisted lipid transfer assays investigating how the SMP domain transports lipids between membranes and associates with the membranes to extract and release lipids. The lipid transfer signal was detected through fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET).

The development of effective synthetic methods to construct γ-lactams bearing a chiral α-quaternary carbon from relatively inert C(O)-H bonds with alkenes has been an elusive challenge. Herein, we used a naphthylamine-derived phosphine oxide ligating Ni and Al bimetallic catalyst to realize a carbonylative cyclization of formyl C-H bonds with alkenes, highly regio- and enantioselectively constructing γ-lactams bearing a chiral α-quaternary carbon in up to 99% yield and 98% ee. These γ-lactams proved to be versatile synthetic precursors for many biologically active molecules.

Phosphodiesterase 2A (PDE2A) plays a pivotal role in modulating cyclic nucleotide metabolism. Recent studies have shown that PDE2A is associated with some tumors, but its expression profiles, prognostic significance, and immunological roles in diverse cancer types remain unclear. Utilizing advanced bioinformatics tools, we performed a comprehensive analysis of PDE2A gene expression in multiple human cancers.

Chemo-dynamic therapy (CDT) has a great potential in tumor extirpation. It entails producing hypertoxic reactive oxygen species (ROS) that damage the DNA of tumor cells and other biomacromolecules. However, the efficiency of CDT is severely hampered by the massive presence of glutathione (GSH) in tumor cells and the interference of ROS defense systems, such as Mutt homolog 1 (MTH1) protein sanitizes ROS-oxidized nucleotide pools.

With the rapid development of mobile communication technology and wearable electronic devices, the electromagnetic radiation generated by high-frequency information exchange inevitably threatens human health, so high-performance wearable electromagnetic interference (EMI) shielding materials are urgently needed. The 2D nanomaterial MXene exhibits superior EMI shielding performance owing to its high conductivity, however, its mechanical properties are limited due to the high porosity between MXene nanosheets. In recent years, it has been reported that by introducing natural nanocellulose as an organic framework, the EMI shielding and mechanical properties of MXene/nanocellulose composites can be synergically improved, which are expected to be widely used in wearable multifunctional shielding devices.

Photoagents with ultra-high near-infrared II (NIR-II) light energy conversion efficiency hold great promise in tumor phototherapy due to their ability to penetrate deeper tissues and minimize damage to surrounding healthy cells. However, the development of NIR-II photoagents remain challenging. In this study, an all-fused-ring quinoidal acceptor-donor-acceptor (A-D-A) molecule, SKCN, with a BTP core is synthesized, and nanoparticles named FA-SNPs are prepared.

Diffuse large B-cell lymphoma (DLBCL) is a highly heterogeneous hematological malignancy resulting in a range of outcomes, and the early prediction of these outcomes has important implications for patient management. Clinical scoring systems provide the most commonly used prognostic evaluation criteria, and the value of genetic testing has also been confirmed by in-depth research on molecular typing. [F]-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography / computed tomography ([F]FDG PET/CT) is an invaluable tool for predicting DLBCL progression.

Macrophages are key players in maintaining the balance of tissues and dealing with inflammation, carrying out vital functions specific to different tissues while safeguarding the body against infections. The intricate interplay between oxidative stress and macrophage polarization and how this contributes to pneumonia is not fully understood. Herein, a predominant accumulation of baicalein in lung macrophages of pathogen-infected mice was observed by an alkynyl-modified probe.

The outbreak of emerging acute viral diseases urgently requires the acceleration of specialized antiviral drug development, thus widely adopting phenotypic screening as a strategy for drug repurposing in antiviral research. However, traditional phenotypic screening methods typically require several days of experimental cycles and lack visual confirmation of a drug's ability to inhibit viral infection. Here, we report a robust method that utilizes quantum-dot-based single-virus tracking and machine learning to generate unique single-virus infection fingerprint data from viral trajectories and detect the dynamic changes in viral movement following drug administration.
