Severe Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) has been a global pandemic which provokes massive devastation to the society, economy, and culture since January 2020. The pandemic demonstrates the inefficiency of superannuated manual detection approaches and inspires novel approaches that detect COVID-19 by classifying chest x-ray (CXR) images with deep learning technology. Although a wide range of researches about bran-new COVID-19 detection methods that classify CXR images with centralized convolutional neural network (CNN) models have been proposed, the latency, privacy, and cost of information transmission between the data resources and the centralized data center will make the detection inefficient.

National Laboratory of Solid State Microstructures and Collaborative Innovation Center of Advanced Microstructures, Jiangsu Key Laboratory for Nano Technology, College of Engineering and Applied Science Nanjing University Nanjing 210093, People's Republic of China.

Two-dimensional (2D) semiconductors for photocatalysis are more advantageous than the other photocatalytic materials since the 2D semiconductors generally have large specific surface area and abundant active sites. Phosphorus silicon (SiP), with an indirect bandgap in bulk and a direct bandgap in the monolayer, has recently emerged as an attractive 2D material because of its anisotropic layered structure, tunable bandgap, and high charge carrier mobility. However, the utilization of SiP as a photocatalyst for photocatalysis has been scarcely studied experimentally.

Ensemble-based data assimilation of radar observations across inner-core regions of tropical cyclones (TCs) in tandem with satellite all-sky infrared (IR) radiances across the TC domain improves TC track and intensity forecasts. This study further investigates potential enhancements in TC track, intensity, and rainfall forecasts via assimilation of all-sky microwave (MW) radiances using Hurricane Harvey (2017) as an example. Assimilating Global Precipitation Measurement constellation all-sky MW radiances in addition to GOES-16 all-sky IR radiances reduces the forecast errors in the TC track, rapid intensification (RI), and peak intensity compared to assimilating all-sky IR radiances alone, including a 24-hr increase in forecast lead-time for RI.

The Sahel rainfall has a close teleconnection with North Atlantic sea surface temperature (NASST) variability, which has separately been shown to be affected by aerosols. Therefore, changes in regional aerosols emission could potentially drive multidecadal Sahel rainfall variability. Here we combine ensembles of state-of-the-art global climate models (the CESM and CanESM large ensemble simulations and CMIP6 models) with observational data sets to demonstrate that anthropogenic aerosols have significantly impacted 20th-century detrended Sahel rainfall multidecadal variability through modifying NASST.

Metal clusters, such as iron-sulfur clusters, play key roles in sustaining life and are intimately involved in the functions of metalloproteins. Herein we report the formation and crystal structure of a planar square tetranuclear silver cluster when silver ions were mixed with human copper chaperone Atox1. Quantum chemical studies reveal that two Ag 5s electrons in the tetranuclear silver cluster fully occupy the one bonding molecular orbital, with the assumption that this Ag cluster is Ag , leading to extensive electron delocalization over the planar square and significant stabilization.

Article Synopsis
  • Magnesium (Mg) is crucial for photosynthesis as it is a cofactor for various enzymes in chloroplasts and is central to chlorophyll molecules.
  • Researchers identified two transport proteins in Arabidopsis, MGR8 and MGR9, essential for Mg transport across the chloroplast envelope; mutations in both led to severe growth defects like albino ovules and chlorotic seedlings.
  • The study found that MGR8 and MGR9 not only complement a strain lacking Mg uptake but also their functioning is vital for chloroplast Mg uptake, with double mutants showing increased sensitivity to Mg deficiency and lower chloroplast Mg levels compared to wild-type plants.

Electrochemiluminescence (ECL) comprises a sophisticated cascade of reactions. Despite advances in mechanistic studies by electrochemistry and spectroscopy, a lack of access to dynamic molecular information renders many plausible ECL pathways unclear or unproven. Here we describe the construction of a real-time ECL mass spectrometry (MS) platform (RT-Triplex) for synchronization of dynamic electrical, luminescent, and mass spectrometric outputs during ECL events.

A facile, efficient and metal free one-flask approach to diversely substituted furans from easily accessible 3-chloro-3-phenyldiazirines and α,β-alkenyl ketones is reported. This protocol integrates three steps of cyclopropanation, Cloke-Wilson rearrangement and elimination of HCl in one-flask to give products in moderate to good yields. It provides a metal and oxidant free approach to multi-substituted furans with the advantages of easy operation, mild reaction conditions and a broad scope of substrates.

The contribution of new particle formation and subsequent growth to haze formation.

Environ Sci Atmos

Institute for Atmospheric and Earth System Research (INAR)/Physics, Faculty of Science, University of Helsinki Finland

We investigated the contribution of atmospheric new particle formation (NPF) and subsequent growth of the newly formed particles, characterized by high concentrations of fine particulate matter (PM). In addition to having adverse effects on visibility and human health, these haze particles may act as cloud condensation nuclei, having potentially large influences on clouds and precipitation. Using atmospheric observations performed in 2019 in Beijing, a polluted megacity in China, we showed that the variability of growth rates (GR) of particles originating from NPF depend only weakly on low-volatile vapor - highly oxidated organic molecules (HOMs) and sulphuric acid - concentrations and have no apparent connection with the strength of NPF or the level of background pollution.

The emergence of optochemical approaches has had a diverse impact over a broad range of biological research due to spatiotemporal regulation. Herein, we integrate this feature into the bioorthogonal chemical reporter strategy, which enables visible light-controlled spatiotemporal labeling of cell-surface glycans, lipids, and proteins. The metabolic precursors were first incorporated into live cells, and next the bioorthogonal reaction converted the azide/alkyne into a photo-active functional group, which allowed for subsequent photo-click reaction.

Tumor-targeted delivery of small-interfering RNAs (siRNAs) for cancer therapy still remains a challenging task. While antibody-siRNA conjugates (ARCs) provide an alternative way to address this challenge, the uncontrollable siRNA release potentially leads to undesirable off-tumor side effects, limiting their therapeutic efficacy. Here, we report a photoresponsive ARC (PARC) for tumor-specific and photoinducible siRNA delivery as well as photoactivable immunogene therapy.

Jiangsu Provincial Key Laboratory of Advanced Photonic and Electronic Materials, School of Electronic Science and Engineering, Nanjing National Laboratory of Microstructures, Nanjing University Nanjing 210093 P. R. China

A strong coupling effect often occurs between a metal and semiconductor, so micro/nano-lasers based on surface plasmons can break through the optical diffraction limit and realize unprecedented linear and nonlinear enhancement of optical processes. Hence, metal-insulator-semiconductor (M-I-S) structures based on perovskite materials were explored to design optoelectronic devices. Herein, we constructed an Ag/SiO/CsPbBr hybrid structure to generate surface plasmon coupled emission between the metal and CsPbBr perovskite.

Atomically precise metal nanoclusters doped with one or more heteroatom of other metals have exhibited extraordinary catalytic properties. Here we report a series of thiolate-protected AgM (M is dopant Ni, Pd and Pt) nanoclusters that adopt a similar structural framework like a distorted hexahedron, in which four Ag atoms are located at the midpoints of four side edges and two metal heteroatoms reside on the centres of the top and the bottom planes. The opposite orders of the catalytic performances of the three catalysts for the photocatalytic degradation of the methyl orange and rhodamine B dyes are found, which is attributed to two different types of inter-molecular recombination mechanisms.
