Article Synopsis
  • Secondary organic aerosols (SOAs) are crucial in affecting climate and human health, with aromatic hydrocarbons (AHs) being key contributors to their formation in urban settings.
  • A study on toluene, a common AH, reveals that its second-generation oxidation creates new epoxy compounds (TEPOX) that can further react in the atmosphere, leading to the formation of less-volatile organosulfates and organonitrates.
  • This new understanding suggests that toluene's contribution to SOA formation is much higher than previously thought, highlighting the need for further investigation into SOA precursors in urban environments.

State Key Laboratory of Analytical Chemistry for Life Science, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Nanjing University Nanjing 210023 China

Cellular biomarkers mainly contain proteins, nucleic acids, glycans and many small molecules including small biomolecule metabolites, reactive oxygen species and other cellular chemical entities. The detection and mapping of the key cellular biomarkers can effectively help us to understand important cellular mechanisms associated with physiological and pathological processes, which greatly promote the development of clinical diagnosis and disease treatment. Surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) possesses high sensitivity and is free from the influence of strong self-fluorescence in living systems as well as the photobleaching of the dyes.

Polyaniline (PANI), with merits of high electronic conductivity and capacity, is a promising material for zinc (Zn)-ion batteries. However, its redox window in Zn batteries is often limited, mainly due to the oxidative degradation at high potentials-in which imine groups can be attacked by water molecules. Here, we introduce phytic acid, a kind of supermolecule acid radical ion, as a dopant and electrolyte additive.

November 2023

High Magnetic Field Laboratory of Anhui Province, HFIPS, Chinese Academy of Sciences Hefei 230031 China

Due to the unique combination configuration and the formation of a built-in electric field, mixed-dimensional heterojunctions present fruitful possibilities for improving the optoelectronic performances of low-dimensional optoelectronic devices. However, the response times of most photodetectors built from mixed-dimensional heterojunctions are within the millisecond range, limiting their applications in fast response optoelectronic devices. Herein, a mixed-dimensional BiSeI/GaSe van der Waals heterostructure is designed, which exhibits visible light detection ability and competitive photoresponsivity of 750 A W and specific detectivity of 2.

National Laboratory of Solid State Microstructures, College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, Frontiers Science Center for Critical Earth Material Cycling, Nanjing University Nanjing 210023 (China).

Combining wide-band gap (WBG) and narrow-band gap (NBG) perovskites with interconnecting layers (ICLs) to construct monolithic all-perovskite tandem solar cell is an effective way to achieve high power conversion efficiency (PCE). However, optical losses from ICLs need to be further reduced to leverage the full potential of all-perovskite tandem solar cells. Here, metal oxide nanocrystal layers anchored with carbazolyl hole-selective-molecules (CHs), which exhibit much lower optical loss, is employed to replace poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrenesulfonate (PEDOT : PSS) as the hole transporting layers (HTLs) in lead-tin (Pb-Sn) perovskite sub-cells and ICLs in all-perovskite tandem solar cells.

Carbocations are important electrophilic intermediates in organic chemistry, but their formation typically requires harsh conditions such as extremely low pH, elevated temperature, strong oxidants and/or expensive noble-metal catalysts. Herein, we report the spontaneous generation of highly reactive carbocations in water microdroplets by simply spraying a diarylmethanol aqueous solution. The formation of transient carbocations as well as their ultrafast in-droplet transformations through carbocation-involved C-C and C-N bond formation reactions are directly characterized by mass spectrometry.

College of Engineering and Applied Sciences, State Key Laboratory of Analytical Chemistry for Life Science, Jiangsu Key Laboratory of Artificial Functional Materials, Chemistry and Biomedicine Innovation Center, Nanjing University Nanjing 210023 China

Three-dimensional assembly based on DNA origami structures is an ideal method to precisely fabricate nano-scale materials. Additionally, applying an anisotropic assembly unit facilitates constructing complex materials with extraordinary structure. However, it still remains challenging to crystallize anisotropic DNA nano-structures using simple design, because the assembly of low-symmetry monomers often requires harsh auxiliary conditions and more complicated crystallization processes.

State Key Laboratory of Analytical Chemistry for Life Science, Jiangsu Key Laboratory of Advanced Organic Materials, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Nanjing University Nanjing 210023 China

X-ray crystallography is the most reliable method for structure elucidation and absolute configuration determination of organic molecules based on their single-crystal forms. However, many analytes are hard to crystallize because of their low melting points (an oily state at room temperature) or conformational flexibility. Here, we report the crystallization of a macrocycle, CTX[P(O)Ph] (host), which is a cyclotrixylohydroquinoylene (CTX) derivative, with 26 oily organic molecules (guests), which is applied for the structural determination of the guest with X-ray crystallography.

Macroscopic handedness inversion of terbium coordination polymers achieved by doping homochiral ligand analogues.

Chem Sci

State Key Laboratory of Coordination Chemistry, School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Collaborative Innovation Centre of Advanced Microstructures, Nanjing University Nanjing 210023 P. R. China

Inspired by natural biological systems, chiral or handedness inversion by altering external and internal conditions to influence intermolecular interactions is an attractive topic for regulating chiral self-assembled materials. For coordination polymers, the regulation of their helical handedness remains little reported compared to polymers and supramolecules. In this work, we choose the chiral ligands -pempH (pempH = (1-phenylethylamino)methylphosphonic acid) and -XpempH (X = F, Cl, Br) as the second ligand, which can introduce C-H⋯π and C-H⋯X interactions, doped into the reaction system of the Tb(-cyampH)·3HO (cyampH = (1-cyclohexylethylamino)methylphosphonic acid) coordination polymer, which itself can form a right-handed superhelix by van der Waals forces, and a series of superhelices -1H-, -2F-, -3Cl-, and -4Br- with different doping ratios were obtained, whose handedness is related to the second ligand and its doping ratio, indicating the decisive role of interchain interactions of different strengths in the helical handedness.

The hot carrier multi-junction solar cell (HCMJSC) is one of the promising advanced conceptual solar cells with theoretical efficiency greater than 65%, consisting of a thin top junction with a wide bandgap and a thicker junction at the bottom with a medium bandgap for absorption of high and low energy photons. The wide bandgap CdSe/CdS low-dimensional systems ( quantum dots, QDs and nanoplatelets, NPLs) widely used in optoelectrical devices are expected to be an appropriate candidate for the top junction. However, the mechanisms underlying the carrier relaxation rate reduction (or phonon bottleneck effect, PBE) for HCMJSC in these material systems are not well understood so far.

Transition metal mediated C-X (X = H, halogen) bond activation provides an impressive protocol for building polyaromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in C-C bond coupling and annulation; however, mimicking both the reaction model and Lewis acid mediator simultaneously in a hetero-PAH system for selective C-P bond cleavage faces unsolved challenges. At present, developing the C-P bond activation protocol of the phosphonic backbone using noble-metal complexes is a predominant passway for the construction of phosphine catalysts and P-center redox-dependent photoelectric semiconductors, but non-noble metal triggered methods are still elusive. Herein, we report Mn(iii)-mediated C-P bond activation and intramolecular cyclization of diphosphines by a redox-directed radical phosphonium process, generating phosphahelicene cations or phosphoniums with nice regioselectivity and substrate universality under mild conditions.

2-Methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylcholine (MPC) zwitterions were modified onto self-made graphene oxide (GO) through the atom transfer radical polymerization method. The chemical structures of the products were verified using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), Raman spectroscopy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR), X-ray diffraction (XRD), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), It was found that the modified GO (GO-PCn) is well dispersed in water with an average hydrodynamic diameter of about 170 nm. By utilizing the 2D planar structure of this modified graphene, the irinotecan@GO-PCn composite can be loaded with about 20% of irinotecan π-π stacking interaction and exhibit pH-sensitive drug release performance, releasing faster in the acidic environment.
