The performance of a novel diagnostic criteria for neurosyphilis in HIV-negative patients.

Sci Rep

December 2024

Institute of Dermatology, Peking Union Medical College, Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences, National Center for STD Control, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Nanjing, China.

Diagnosing neurosyphilis in clinical settings poses significant challenges due to the absence of highly efficient diagnostic criteria. Our objective was to enhance the existing diagnostic criteria and assess their sensitivity and specificity for identifying neurosyphilis in HIV-negative patients. We conducted a retrospective review of patient records from a cross-sectional study carried out between December 2019 and May 2023.

J Viral Hepat

February 2025

Department of Hepatology, Nanjing Second Hospital, Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine, Nanjing, Jiangsu, China.

Acute hepatitis B (AHB) is generally a self-limiting illness in adults and most patients achieve hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) clearance within 6 months. We aimed to investigate the proportion and influencing factors of chronic outcome in adult AHB patients. A total of 126 consecutive AHB patients were included between January 2013 and October 2018.

LINC01094 promotes gastric cancer through dual targeting of CDKN1A by directly binding RBMS2 and HDAC1.

Biol Direct

December 2024

Department of Gastrointestinal Surgery, Affiliated Hospital of Jiangnan University, 1000 Hefeng Road, Wuxi, 214062, Jiangsu Province, China.

Background: Accumulating studies have focused on long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) because of their regulatory effects on multiple cancers. However, the biological functions and molecular mechanisms of lncRNAs in gastric cancer (GC) remain to be elucidated in depth.

Methods: Long intergenic nonprotein coding RNA 1094 (LINC01094), a differentially expressed lncRNA between GC tissues and adjacent normal tissues, was identified.

Article Synopsis
  • * A study of 304 hospitalized SFTS patients from 2010 to 2022 found that those with GI symptoms had different demographic and lab results, such as a lower percentage of males and higher enzyme levels, compared to those without GI symptoms.
  • * Despite the prevalence of GI symptoms, the study concluded that they did not significantly impact mortality rates or the likelihood of ICU admission, indicating they are not an independent risk factor for worse outcomes in SFTS patients.

Vascular calcification is closely associated with morbidity and mortality in patients with chronic kidney disease, atherosclerosis and diabetes. In the past few decades, vascular calcification has been studied extensively and the findings have shown that the mechanism of vascular calcification is not merely a consequence of a high-phosphorus and high-calcium environment but also an active process characterized by abnormal calcium phosphate deposition on blood vessel walls that involves various molecular mechanisms. Recent advances in bioinformatics approaches have led to increasing recognition that aberrant post-translational modifications (PTMs) play important roles in vascular calcification.

Introduction: Eltrombopag (EPAG), a thrombopoietin receptor agonist, was approved for the treatment of severe aplastic anemia (SAA) combined with immunosuppressive therapy (IST). However, EPAG contains a typical biphenyl structure, which causes liver function damage.

Methods: Twenty patients with SAA who were intolerant or refractory to EPAG were enrolled in a multicenter prospective registry of the Chinese Eastern Collaboration Group of Anemia (ChiCTR2100045895) from October 2020 to June 2023.

Background And Aims: The mitotic catastrophe (MC) pathway plays an important role in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) progression and tumor microenvironment (TME) regulation. However, the mechanisms linking MC heterogeneity to immune evasion and treatment response remain unclear.

Methods: Based on 94 previously published highly correlated genes for MC, HCC patients' data from the Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) and changes in immune signatures and prognostic stratification were studied.

Background: Crohn's disease (CD) patients require varying levels of supportive care. In order to facilitate caregivers and nurses in precisely evaluating the caregiving requirements of these patients, we developed the CD-specific Care Needs Scale (CD-CNS).

Methods: This study employed a mixed-methods approach, integrating qualitative and quantitative methodologies.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates the effects of ASC22 (a PD-1 antibody) on patients with chronic hepatitis B who are already virally suppressed using nucleos(t)ide analogs, aiming to find a potential cure for HBV by targeting the PD-1 pathway.
  • - In a phase IIb trial involving 149 patients, those receiving 1.0 mg/kg ASC22 experienced significant declines in HBsAg levels compared to the placebo group, with 30% achieving HBsAg loss among those with lower baseline levels.
  • - The treatment was found to be safe and well-tolerated, with mostly mild adverse events reported, indicating ASC22 has potential as a therapeutic option for chronic hepatitis B infection.

Screening for viral hepatitis carriage.

Best Pract Res Clin Obstet Gynaecol

September 2024

Departments of Laboratory Medicine and Infectious Diseases and Obstetrics & Gynecology, Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital, Nanjing University Medical School, Nanjing, China. Electronic address:

Viral hepatitis during pregnancy is common globally. In this review, we focus on the antenatal screen for hepatitis A, B, C and E, the prevention of mother-to-child transmission (MTCT) of hepatitis B and C, and the management of hepatitis A, B, C and E during pregnancy. Neonatal timely administration of hepatitis B immunoglobulin and hepatitis B vaccine is the cornerstone for preventing MTCT of hepatitis B virus (HBV), and perinatal antiviral prophylaxis with tenofovir disoproxil fumarate in mothers with positive HBeAg or HBV DNA >2 × 10 IU/ml also plays important roles in further reducing MTCT.

  • Exploring precise and accessible biomarkers is crucial for managing breast cancer effectively.
  • A study involving 512 breast cancer patients and 198 nonneoplastic individuals found significantly higher levels of tumor-derived extracellular vesicles in newly diagnosed patients and those with metastasis.
  • This method outperformed traditional tumor markers, making elevated tumor-derived extracellular vesicles a valuable predictive biomarker for both diagnosis and monitoring metastasis in breast cancer patients.

The study aimed to investigate the clinical significance of the interaction between hypoxia and the immune system in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) microenvironment. A comprehensive evaluation of 13 hypoxia phenotype-related genes (HPRs) was conducted using data from TCGA-ESCC and two GEO cohorts. Three distinct HPRclusters were identified, and the HPRscore was established as an independent prognostic factor ( = 0.

Background: The clinical routine test of HBV-specific T cell reactivity is still limited due to the high polymorphisms of human leukocyte antigens (HLA) in patient cohort and the lack of universal detection kit, thus the clinical implication remains disputed.

Methods: A broad-spectrum peptide library, which consists of 103 functionally validated CD8 T-cell epitopes spanning overall HBsAg, HBeAg, HBx and HBpol proteins and fits to the HLA polymorphisms of Chinese and Northeast Asian populations, was grouped into eight peptide pools and was used to establish an ELISpot assay for enumerating the reactive HBV-specific T cells in PBMCs. Totally 294 HBV-infected patients including 203 ones with chronic hepatitis B (CHB), 13 ones in acute resolved stage (R), 52 ones with liver cirrhosis (LC) and 26 ones with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) were detected, and 33 CHB patients were longitudinally monitored for 3 times with an interval of 3-5 months.
