Doxorubicin (DOX) has a limitation in clinical oncology due to its dose-dependent cardiotoxicity. Thiolutin (THL) can undermine DOX-induced cardiomyocyte injury by inhibiting the NLRP3 inflammasome activation, yet the efficacy of THL in DOX-induced cardiotoxicity (DOXIC) needs to be validated in animal models. DOX-induced mice were treated with THL to evaluate the efficacy of THL.

Article Synopsis
  • A study evaluated a new long-lasting pain relief medication called QP001, compared to a placebo, to determine its effectiveness and safety for patients after abdominal surgery.
  • Conducted across 23 centers, 255 patients were administered either QP001 or placebo, and the results showed QP001 significantly reduced pain intensity for up to 24 hours post-surgery.
  • The trial indicated that QP001 also reduced the need for morphine and increased patient satisfaction, with no significant difference in adverse events compared to placebo.

FSP1 Acts in Parallel with GPX4 to Inhibit Ferroptosis in COPD.

Am J Respir Cell Mol Biol

October 2024

Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Wuxi People's Hospital, Nanjing Medical University, Wuxi, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Glutathione peroxidase 4 (GPX4) is crucial in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), while Ferroptosis suppressor protein-1 (FSP1) may also play a significant, but unexplored, role in the disease's development.
  • The study involved comparing lung tissues from COPD patients and normal individuals, examining the effects of FSP1 on ferroptosis and its relationship to COPD using various laboratory methods, including gene expression analysis.
  • Results revealed that low FSP1 expression, caused by increased m6A modification of its mRNA, contributes to ferroptosis in COPD, suggesting that targeting FSP1 methylation could provide new treatment options for the disease.

An anthropomorphic diagnosis system of pulmonary nodules using weak annotation-based deep learning.

Comput Med Imaging Graph

December 2024

Department of Biomedical Engineering, Binghamton University, Binghamton, NY, USA. Electronic address:

The accurate categorization of lung nodules in CT scans is an essential aspect in the prompt detection and diagnosis of lung cancer. The categorization of grade and texture for nodules is particularly significant since it can aid radiologists and clinicians to make better-informed decisions concerning the management of nodules. However, currently existing nodule classification techniques have a singular function of nodule classification and rely on an extensive amount of high-quality annotation data, which does not meet the requirements of clinical practice.

Background: In past studies, non-medical factors in the social-healthcare-patient triad associated with the prevalence of COVID-19 have led to delays in the presentation of patients with acute appendicitis and an increase in complications. However, as research progresses, there is increasing evidence of a clinical association between COVID-19 and the development of acute appendicitis.

Methods: The effect of COVID-19 prevalence and associated factors on acute appendicitis in the control (2016-2019) and exposed (2020-2023) groups was derived from a retrospective study of 3070 patients with acute appendicitis from 2016 to 2023.

Intratumoral microbiome is associated with gastric cancer prognosis and therapy efficacy.

Gut Microbes

June 2024

Key Laboratory of Carcinogenesis and Translational Research (Ministry of Education), Division of Gastrointestinal Cancer Center, Peking University Cancer Hospital & Institute, Beijing, China.

The role of the intratumoral microbiome in gastric cancer (GC) has not been comprehensively assessed. Here, we explored the relationship between the microbial community and GC prognosis and therapy efficacy. Several cancer-associated microbial characteristics were identified, including increased α-diversity, differential β-diversity, and decreased abundance.

Lung adenocarcinoma is a malignant tumor with high morbidity and mortality. ZBTB16 plays a double role in various tumors; however, the potential mechanism of ZBTB16 in the pathophysiology of lung adenocarcinoma has yet to be elucidated. We herein observed a decreased expression of ZBTB16 mRNA and protein in lung adenocarcinoma and a significantly increased DNA methylation level of ZBTB16 in patients with lung adenocarcinoma.

Objective: To explore the relationship between the completion time of fluid resuscitation as well as negative fluid balance volumes and the prognosis of patients with septic shock, and to try to construct a prediction model based on the completion time of fluid resuscitation and negative fluid balance volumes, and to verify the predictive efficacy of the model on the prognosis of patients with septic shock.

Methods: Patients with septic shock admitted to Wuxi People's Hospital from April 2020 to April 2023 were selected. The general data (gender, age, body mass index, infection site), pathological indicators on admission, the difference of acute physiology and chronic health evaluation II (APACHE II) and sequential organ failure assessment (SOFA) between admission and 24 hours after fluid resuscitation, the completion time of fluid resuscitation and negative fluid balance volume were recorded.

Ribosome production factor 2 homolog (RPF2) plays an important role in the life processes of ribosomal biogenesis; however, the function and mechanism of RPF2 in tumors are unclear. The present study demonstrated that RPF2 expression is involved in chemoresistance in colorectal cancer (CRC) cells. The current study demonstrated that upregulation of RPF2 expression in CRC promoted resistance to chemotherapeutic agents in CRC cells, whereas knockdown of RPF2 leads to increased sensitivity of CRC to chemotherapy.

The origin of chronic pain is linked to inflammation, characterized by increased levels of proinflammatory cytokines in local tissues and systemic circulation. Transforming growth factor beta-activated kinase 1 (TAK1) is a key regulator of proinflammatory cytokine signaling that has been well characterized in the context of cancer and autoimmune disorders, yet its role in chronic pain is less clear. Here, we evaluated the ability of our TAK1 small-molecule inhibitor, takinib, to attenuate pain and inflammation in preclinical models of inflammatory, neuropathic, and primary pain.

As an emerging diabetes diagnostic indicator and a dynamic change index, HbA1c can not only reflect the average blood glucose level over a period of time but can also well predict the incidence of related microvascular complications. It is important to develop a detection method that can dynamically characterize HbA1c. Silicon nanowire (SiNW) devices were mass-produced using top-down sputtering technology, and a microdialyzer was installed in a SiNW field effect tube biosensor detection system.

Colorectal cancer (CRC) is one of the most common malignancies of the gastrointestinal tract, and its prognosis is closely related to the degree of tumor invasion and metastasis. Ribosome production factor 2 homolog (RPF2) plays an important role in the process of ribosome biogenesis; however, its biological function in the progression of malignant tumors including CRC remains unknown. It was found that RPF2 expression was significantly higher in CRC tissues than in the adjacent normal tissue, using mRNA chip technology.
