Graphene quantum dots (GQDs) have attracted significant interests due to their unique chemical and physical properties. In this study, we investigated the potential effects of hydroxyl-modified GQDs (OH-GQDs) on the human esophageal epithelial cell line HET-1A. Our data revealed significant cytotoxicity of OH-GQDs which decreased the viability of HET-1A in a dose and time-dependent manner.

Hirschsprung's disease (HSCR) is a birth defect that causes a failure of the enteric nervous system to cover the distal gut during early embryonic development. Evidence shows that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNA) play important roles in HSCR. The MIR31 host gene (MIR31HG), also known as Loc554202, is a long non-coding RNA (lncRNA), which acts as the host gene of (microRNA) miR-31 and miR-31*.

Rapid repair of vascular injury is an important prognostic factor for electrical burns. This repair is achieved mainly via stromal cell-derived factor (SDF)-1α promoting the mobilization, chemotaxis, homing, and targeted differentiation of bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) into endothelial cells. Forming a concentration gradient from the site of local damage in the circulation is essential to the role of SDF-1α.

Nigericin, an antibiotic derived from , which works by acting as an H, K, and Pb ionophore, has exhibited promising anticancer activity. The main purpose of this study is to investigate its inhibitory effects on Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway in colorectal cancer cells and clarify the underlying mechanism. We exposed two colorectal cancer lines (SW620 and KM12) to increasing concentrations of nigericin for different time periods and the 50% inhibiting concentration (IC) values were evaluated.

Background: The purpose of this study was to clarify whether pretreatment tumor burden-related index, including the gross tumor volume (GTV) of metastatic lymph nodes (V) and maximum diameter of metastatic lymph nodes (D), and inflammatory markers, consisting of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR) and platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), are useful for assessing the therapeutic effects and prognosis with secondary lymph node metastasis (LNM) receiving chemoradiotherapy (CRT) or radiotherapy (RT) alone after resection of esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC).

Patients And Methods: A total of 119 patients with secondary LNM after resection of ESCC were recruited and received curative RT only or CRT. The enrolled patients were grouped according to the median values of NLR, PLR, V, and D.

Impairment of neurogenesis in the hippocampus following whole-brain irradiation is the most important mechanism of radiation-induced cognitive dysfunction. However, the underlying mechanism remains obscure, meaning an ideal therapeutic target has not been identified. Evidence indicates that DNA methylation in neurons regulates synaptic plasticity and neuronal network activity.

MicroRNA-let-7a regulates cell autophagy by targeting Rictor in gastric cancer cell lines MGC-803 and SGC-7901.

The Core Laboratory of The Suzhou Cancer Center and Department of Radiotherapy, Nanjing Medical University Affiliated Suzhou Hospital, Suzhou, Jiangsu 215001, P.R. China.

miR-let-7a is the most widely studied miRNA, whose functions have been well-established by scientists in both carcinogenesis and progression of human cancer, including gastric cancer (GC). However, to date there is a lack of information concerning the relationship between miR-let-7a and cellular autophagy. Using western blotting and immunofluorescence, we determined that upregulation of miR-let-7a led to increased cellular autophagic level, whereas miR-let-7a suppression decreased autophagy activity in GC cells.

As a key regulator of DNA translesion synthesis (TLS) pathway, RAD18 is error-prone and contributes to the accumulation of DNA mutations. We have recently shown that RAD18 is overexpressed in human esophageal squamous cell cancer (ESCC) and acts to promote ESCC progression. The current study aims to understand the molecular mechanism by which RAD18 enhances the invasiveness and metastasis of ESCC cells.

Non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) is the most common type of lung cancer. (-)-Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), a major polyphenol in green tea, is widely studied as a cancer chemopreventive agent with potential anti-cancer effects. The NF-E2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)/heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) signaling pathway is considered to mediate cellular resistance to EGCG.

January 2018

From the ‡State Key Laboratory of Reproductive Medicine, Department of Histology and Embryology, Nanjing Medical University, Nanjing, 211166, P.R. China;

Generation of haploid gametes by meiosis is a unique property of germ cells and is critical for sexual reproduction. Leaving mitosis and entering meiosis is a key step in germ cell development. Several inducers or intrinsic genes are known to be important for meiotic initiation, but the regulation of meiotic initiation, especially at the protein level, is still not well understood.

Radiotherapy is emerging as an important modality for the local control of pancreatic cancer, but pancreatic cancer cell radioresistance remains a serious concern. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα) is a member of the PPAR nuclear hormone receptor superfamily, which can be activated by fibrate ligands. The clinical relevance of PPARα and its biological function in pancreatic cancer radiosensitivity have not been previously described.

Long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) phosphatase and tensin homolog pseudogene 1 (PTENP1) is significantly downregulated in gastric cancer (GC), playing critical roles in GC progression. However, the association between PTENP1 genetic variants and GC risk has not yet been reported. Using TaqMan technology, three lncRNA PTENP1 tag single nucleotide polymorphisms (tagSNPs) (rs7853346 C>G, rs865005 C>T, and rs10971638 G>A) were genotyped in 768 GC patients and 768 cancer-free controls in a Chinese population.

An aberrantly elevated expression of DNA polymerase ι (Pol ι) is significantly associated with poor prognosis of patients with esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC), yet the mechanisms behind this phenomenon remain obscure. Based on the RNA-Seq transcriptome and real-time PCR analysis, we identified ETS-1 as a candidate gene involved in Pol ι-mediated progression of ESCC. Wound-healing and transwell assay indicated that downregulation of ETS-1 attenuates Pol ι-mediated invasiveness of ESCC.

Gastric cancer (GC) is the third leading cause of cancer death due to its poor prognosis and limited treatment options. Evidence indicates that pseudogene-derived long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) may be important players in human cancer progression, including GC. In this paper, we report that a newly discovered pseudogene-derived lncRNA named DUXAP8, a 2107-bp RNA, was remarkably upregulated in GC.

Department of Digestive Endoscopy and Medical Center for Digestive Diseases, Second Affiliated Hospital, Nanjing Medical University, Nanjing, Jiangsu, People's Republic of China.

Evidence indicates that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play a critical role in the regulation of tumor cellular processes, such as proliferation, apoptosis, and metastasis. LncRNA CRNDE (Colorectal Neoplasia Differentially Expressed) is located at human chromosome 16 and has been found overexpressed in a variety of cancers including colorectal cancer (CRC). In this paper, we report that lncRNA CRNDE expression was remarkably upregulated in CRC tissues and that lncRNA CRNDE overexpression was positively correlated with advanced pathological stages and larger tumor sizes.
