Jiangsu Provincial Key Lab of Solid Organic Waste Utilization, Jiangsu Collaborative Innovation Center of Solid Organic Wastes, Educational Ministry Engineering Center of Resource-saving Fertilizers, People' Republic of China; Nanjing Agricultural University, Nanjing 210095, Jiangsu, People' Republic of China.

Humus is the final product of humus precursors (HPS) during the humification process, while the associated mechanisms of humus formation have not been clarified. Here, the HPS degradation intermediate and core fungal function for wheat straw and chicken manure compost (SCM), cow dung compost (CD), Chinese traditional medicine residue compost (CTM) and mushroom dreg and chicken manure compost (MCM) was investigated during the thermophilic phase. The results showed SCM and MCM were rich in proteins, lipids, cellulose, low-molecular-weight organic acids, while CD and CTM contained abundant carbohydrates, aliphatic compounds, easily biodegradable aromatic structures, and intermediates from the lignocellulose degradation.

Key Laboratory of Soil Environment and Pollution Remediation, Institute of Soil Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Nanjing, 210008, China; University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, 100049, China. Electronic address:

The accumulation of trace elements in rice, such as antimony (Sb), has drawn special attention owing to the potential increased risk to human health. However, the effects of two common irrigation methods, alternate wetting and drying and continuous flooding, on Sb behaviors and subsequent accumulation in rice is unclear. In this study a pot experiment with various Sb additions (0, 50, 200, 1000 mg Sb kg) was carried out with these two irrigation methods in two contrasting paddy soils (an Anthrosol and a Ferralic Cambisol).

Electronic address:

Concentrated leachate (CL), characterized with high content salts and compositional complexity of dissolved organic matter (DOM), is difficult to degrade. Understanding the CL from molecular insight level is the requirement for further disposal based on their components. Here, typical CL samples were collected from the multi-stage membrane separation process in a large-scale leachate plant, including nanofiltration (NF), primary ultrafiltration (PUF), secondary nanofiltration (SNF), and reverse osmosis (RO).

A novel composite photocatalyst polyaniline/copper sulfide (PANI/CuS) was successfully prepared using an in situ precipitation method. The surface morphology, internal structure, thermal stability, electronegativity, and visible light photocatalytic activity of PANI/CuS were analyzed by a series of characterization methods. Sulfamethoxazole (SMX) was used as the representative pollutant; the degradation effect, degradation kinetic, and influencing factor of SMX by PANI/CuS under visible light were systematically investigated.

The seasonal and spatial variation in the phytoplankton community structure and the environmental variables were investigated in December (the dry season) 2016 and July (the rainy season) 2017 in the Jinjiang River Estuary, China. We identified a total of 138 species of phytoplankton, which were mainly Chlorophyta, Bacillariophyta, and Cryptophyta in the dry season; however, in the rainy season, only Bacillariophyta were found. In the Jinjiang River Estuary, the species evenness and the biodiversity index were higher in the rainy season and that the species diversity was higher in the dry season.

Co-Innovation Center for the Sustainable Forestry in Southern China, College of Biology and the Environment, Nanjing Forestry University, Nanjing 210037, PR China; National Positioning Observation Station of Hung-tse Lake Wetland Ecosystem, Huaian 223100, PR China.

A one-pot co-pyrolysis of potassium/calcium carbonate with biowaste-derived hydrochar strategy was proposed to prepare hierarchical porous biochars (HPBs) for the first time. The pore structure, especially the pore size distribution, could be designed by adjusting the mass ratios of different carbonates. HPBs were hydrophobic, nitrogen doped, graphitized, and contained surface functional groups.

Environ Pollut

February 2022

Key Laboratory of Soil Environment and Pollution Remediation, Institute of Soil Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Nanjing, 210008, China; University of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing, 100049, China.

Systemic studies on the bioremediation of co-contaminated PAHs and heavy metals are lacking, and this paper provides an in-depth review on the topic. The released sources and transport of co-contaminated PAHs and heavy metals, including their co-occurrence through formation of cation-π interactions and their adsorption in soil are examined. Moreover, it is investigated that co-contamination of PAHs and heavy metals can drive a synergistic positive influence on bioremediation through enhanced secretion of extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs), production of biosynthetic genes, organic acid and enzymatic proliferation.

Article Synopsis
  • Continuous monoculture of cucumbers leads to increased Fusarium wilt caused by Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cucumerinum (FOC), which can be mitigated through the use of antagonistic bacteria and fungi.
  • The study tested the effects of a specific bacterium (B2) and a phenolic acid-degrading fungus (P5) on cucumber plants, finding that co-inoculation of both significantly reduced disease incidence by 63.0% compared to an uninoculated control.
  • Results showed that the inoculations not only decreased the amount of harmful phenolic acids but also enhanced cucumber seedling growth, indicating the potential of this combined approach for healthier crop production.

Degradation and mechanism of hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid by thermally activated persulfate in aqueous solutions.

Chemosphere

January 2022

Key Laboratory of Soil Environment and Pollution Remediation, Institute of Soil Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Nanjing, 210008, China.

Hexafluoropropylene oxide dimer acid (HFPO-DA), an alternative of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), has been detected frequently in environmental media worldwide. It has been reported that HFPO-DA is equal to or more toxic than PFOA, as well as more recalcitrant to degradation. In this study, the efficient degradation of HFPO-DA was achieved by the thermally activated persulfate (TAP) system, but the influence of co-contaminants in the field can be significant.

With the vigorous development of the 5G industry, the characteristic hazardous waste, spent coppery etchant, was also produced in large quantities. In recent years, there are many companies that have begun to collect spent coppery etchant for the purpose of producing recycled products, such as copper sulfate, copper oxide, basic copper chloride, and copper powder, which often contain large amounts of heavy metals. However, due to the lack of relevant standards and applicable regulatory measures, some of the recycled products flow to the feed processing industry and even to the food processing industry.

Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) have attracted much concern because of the environmental and health risks they pose. Here we used liquid chromatography coupled with quadrupole-Orbitrap high-resolution mass spectrometry to quantify 10 types of EDCs at 118 sampling sites in Jiangsu Province, China, and then evaluated their respective environmental risk using a conservative risk quotient method. The results show that, in surface water, the targeted nonylphenol (NP), 4-tert-octylphenol (4-t-OP), and (2-ethylhexyl)phthalate (DEHP) were ranked highest, having mean concentrations above 300 ng/L.
