State Key Joint Laboratory of Environment Simulation and Pollution Control, School of Environment, Beijing Normal University, Beijing, 100875, China.

Fine particulate matter (PM) seriously affects environmental air quality and human health, and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in PM posed a great challenge to clinical medicine. The year of 2013-2017 was an important 5-year period for the implementation of Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan (APPCAP) in China. Here, we took Handan, a PM polluted city in northern China, as the research object and analyzed ARGs in PM in winter (January) from 2013 to 2017.

It is of great significance to develop the effective technique to treat phenol-containing wastewater. Herein, Fe-based prussian blue analogues-derived zero valent iron (ZVI) was successfully synthesized by one-step calcination method. Owing to high specific surface area and rich active sites, ZVI-2 possessed excellent performance in charge transfer.

As a widely used herbicide, atrazine and its two main metabolites of deethylatrazine (DEA) and deisopropylatrazine (DIA) pose an exposure risk for both human beings and animals in the environment. In this study, Caenorhabditis elegans was selected as an in vivo model to compare the toxicity between atrazine and its main metabolites. Upon exposure from the larval stage L1 to adult day 3, both DEA and DIA showed less toxicity on locomotion and reproduction compared with atrazine at concentration of 0.

Transport of polystyrene nanoplastics in porous media: Combined effects of two co-existing substances.

Sci Total Environ

November 2023

Policy Research Center for Environment and Economy, Ministry of Ecology and Environment of the People's Republic of China, Beijing 100000, China. Electronic address:

Both surfactants and natural organic matters (NOMs) are substances commonly found in aqueous environments, and their effects on the transport of nanoplastics that is gradually gaining widespread attention in porous media are currently in their infancy, while their combined effects are absent. We investigated innovatively the combined effect of surfactants and NOMs on the transport of polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) in saturated porous media. Adsorption tests of surfactants and NOMs onto PS-NPs, adsorption tests of PS-NPs onto quartz sand, and transport tests of PS-NPs in saturated quartz sand were conducted.

State Key Laboratory of Pollution Control and Resource Reuse, School of Environment, Nanjing University, Nanjing, Jiangsu 210023, P.R. China.

Perfluorochemicals (PFCs), especially perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA), have contaminated the ground and surface waters throughout the world. Efficient removal of PFCs from contaminated waters has been a major challenge. This study developed a novel UV-based reaction system to achieve fast PFOA adsorption and decomposition without addition of sacrificial chemicals by using synthetic photocatalyst sphalerite (ZnS-[N]) with sufficient surface amination and defects.

A ratiometric nitenpyram (NIT) upconversion luminescence sensor UCNPs-PMOF was fabricated from a metal-porphyrin organic framework (PMOF) and pretreated UCNPs. The reaction between NIT and the PMOF releases the HTCPP (5,10,15,20-tetracarboxyl phenyl) porphyrin ligand, which enhances the absorption of the system at 650 nm, and reduces the upconversion emission intensity of the sensor at 654 nm through a luminescence resonance energy transfer (LRET) mechanism, thus achieving the quantitative detection of NIT. The detection limit was 0.

Natural organic matters (NOMs) are widely present in aqueous environments. The effect of NOMs on the fate of nanoplastics that are gradually receiving widespread attention in porous media needs to be noticed, but relevant research is lacking. To fill this gap, the present study focused on elucidating the influence of NOMs and metal cations with varying concentrations upon the transport, long-term release, and particle fracture of polystyrene nanoplastics (PS-NPs) in saturated porous media.

Understanding the environmental and human impacts associated with polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins/dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (DL-PCBs) exposure from municipal solid waste incinerators (MSWIs) is challenging because information on ambient and dietary exposure levels, spatial characteristics, and potential exposure routes is limited. In this study, 20 households from two villages located on the upwind and downwind sides of a MSWI were selected to characterize the concentration and spatial distribution of PCDD/F and DL-PCB compounds in ambient and food samples, such as dust, air, soil, chicken, egg, and rice samples. The source of exposure was identified using congener profiles and principal component analysis.

Microplastics and biochar, as particulate matter that is prevalent in the water environment, will inevitably encounter and interact with each other during environmental aging. The potential interaction of microplastics and biochar, and the associated impact on their environmental behavior remains largely unknown. In this study, we exposed microplastics and biochar concurrently to ultraviolet light to mimic the aging process, investigated the release and fluorescence characteristics of dissolved organic matter (DOM) in water, and analyzed the effects of co-existing microplastics and biochar on their sorption of organic contaminants.

Three gorges dam shifts estuarine heavy metal risk through suspended sediment gradation.

Key Laboratory of Integrated Regulation and Resource Development on Shallow Lake of Ministry of Education, College of Environment, Hohai University, Nanjing, 210098, China; College of Environment, Hohai University, Nanjing, 210098, China.

Damming alters downstream sediment supply relationships and erosion in the estuarine delta. Given that sediment grainsize serves as a key parameter for the ability to adsorb heavy metals from water, the assessment of estuarine heavy metal risk needs to get connected initially. Hence, fine suspended sediment (<63 μm) in the Yangtze River estuary (YRE) was divided into four grainsize fractions to simulate the surface suspended sediment concentration (SSC) and grainsize composition before and after the completion of the Three Gorges Dam (TGD).

Article Synopsis
  • - Co-pyrolysis, which involves heating biomass waste in low-oxygen conditions, can effectively manage waste and create valuable biochar that improves soil health and reduces harmful metal availability.
  • - The study evaluated the properties of biochar produced from a mix of wheat straw, rice husk, pig manure, and oyster shells, finding that co-pyrolysis enhances the heating value of gases produced and improves biochar quality.
  • - Pot experiments showed that biochars, especially from co-pyrolysis, boosted soil fertility and microbial activity while reducing harmful metals more effectively than traditional limestone amendments, suggesting that using co-pyrolysis biochar could financially benefit agricultural productivity.
