It has been previously shown that the simultaneous exposure of colon cancer cells MIP to irinotecan and secreted protein acidic and rich in cysteine (SPARC) enhances anticancer activity. However, whether there is same effect of SPARC in pancreatic cancer remains largely unknown. Therefore in this study, we aimed to investigate the role of SPARC played in the sensitivity of pancreatic cancer to gemcitabine.

Studies have suggested that salicylate affects neuronal function via interactions with specific membrane channels/receptors. However, the effect of salicylate on activity and synaptic morphology of the hippocampal Cornu Ammonis (CA) 1 area remains to be elucidated. The activation of immediate-early genes (IEGs) was reported to correlate with neuronal activity, in particular activity-regulated cytoskeleton-associated protein and early growth response gene 1.

[Significance of low molecular weight urinary protein for assessment of early renal damage in patients with multiple myeloma].

This study was purposed to evaluate the clinical significance of low molecular weight urinary proteins for diagnosis of early renal damage in patients with multiple myeloma (MM). Medical records of 278 patients with MM in Nanjing School of Clinical Medicine from January 2004 to May 2012 were analyzed retrospectively. These patients were divided into 3 groups: glomerular damage group (n = 143), tubular damage group (n = 114) and normal group (n = 21).

[Impact of anti-OX-LDL antibodies on CD36 mRNA expression in monocytes].

Aim: To investigate the impact of antibodies to oxidized low-density lipoprotein (OX-LDL) on CD36 mRNA expression in monocytes and explore the mechanism underlying the impact on the formation of foam cells.

Methods: U937 cells and the monocytes of New Zealand rabbit were respectively cultured in vitro and divided into 4 groups: the control group (cultured in nutrient medium of RPMI1640), the OX-LDL group (with additional OX-LDL of 50 μg/L in nutrient medium), the OX-LDL+Ab-OX-LDL group (with additional OX-LDL of 50 μg/L and Ab-OX-LDL of 100 μg/L in nutrient medium) and the Ab-OX-LDL group (with additional Ab-OX-LDL of 100 μg/L in nutrient medium). After 24-hour culture, the expression of CD36 mRNA was detected by semi-quantitative RT-PCR.

[Clinical significance of monoclonal gammopathy with undetermined significance--review].

Monoclonal gammopathy with undetermined significance (MGUS) is the most common plasma cell disorder, MGUS is an asymptomatic premalignant disorder, which is markedly underdiagnosed in the general population. The risk frequency of progression to multiple myeloma or a closely related plasma cell disorder was developed at a rate of 1.5% per year, indicating that the condition is not entirely benign.

[Pathogenesis and management of hemorrhage and thrombosis in plasma cell dyscrasias].

Unexpectedly high rates of venous thromboembolic events (VTE) induced by highly effective immune modulating drugs thalidomide and lenalidomide for treatment of multiple myeloma have focused attention on the incidence and underlying pathophysiology of VTE in patients with plasma cell dyscrasias, and on thromboprophylaxis approaches. While bleeding complications are relatively uncommon in the patients with lymphoproliferative disorders, acquired von Willebrand syndrome, typically occurring in the patients with monoclonal gammopathy of unknown significance, and acquired coagulopathies associated with primary amyloidosis can present with haemorrhagic complications and both are challenges to the management. This review highlights these important haemostasis-related complications of plasma cell dyscrasias and provides an overview of other uncommon bleeding and thrombotic events that can affect diagnosis and therapeutic management of clonal plasma cell disorders.

Objective: To investigate the stress shielding rate, ultrastructural and biomechanical property of the healing bone fixed by Swan-like Shape Memory Connector (SMC) during experimental fracture healing in rabbits.

Methods: Unilateral osteotomy of left humeral diaphysis was performed in 140 adult New Zealand rabbits. The humeral fracture was fixed with SMC in study group and 4-hole dynamic compression plate (DCP) in control group.

Objective: To assess the value of Aspergillus galactomannan (GM) double-direct sandwich enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in the diagnosis of invasive aspergillosis (IA).

Methods: Forty nine patients were divided into IA group (n = 11), other invasive fungal infection group (n = 20) and Aspergillus colonization group (n = 18). The serum samples of all patients and 6 patients with IA after 7 day treatment were used for GM detection.

Methods: Three hundred normal people and 435 hospitalized patients, who lived in Hunan and Jiangsu provinces, and the Xinjiang Autonomous Region, were tested with yeast-phase histoplasmin (ALK/Berkerley Biologicals Laboratories, USA) and human pure protein derivative of tuberculin (PPD) on the volar surface of the forearm.
