Background: Physical activity (PA) promotion has proven effectiveness in preventing childhood obesity. Increasing children's health knowledge is the most frequently used approach in PA intervention programs targeting childhood obesity prevention. However, little is known about the specific association between the change in a child's knowledge awareness and their PA practice.

Foreign body (FB) ingestion is a common emergency as well as a major cause of accidental injury and represents a severe public health problem in childhood, especially in infants. Most cases of FB ingestion reported in children aged between 6 months and 3 years depend primarily on the fact that young children are more likely to explore objects using their mouth and are not able to distinguish edible objects from nonedible ones, their teeth are physiologically lacking, and they have poor swallowing coordination. Although, sometimes it can cause serious complications, FB ingestion generally has a low mortality rate.

MUC4 mucin is well known as an important potential target to overcome pancreatic cancer. Three unique domains (NIDO, AMOP, and vWD) with unclear roles only present in MUC4 but are not found in other membrane-bound mucins. Our previous studies first reported that its splice variant, MUC4/Y can be a model of MUC4 (MUC4 gene fragment is more than 30KB, too huge to clone and eukaryotic express) in pancreatic cancer.

Purpose: We studied the effect of cranium distraction osteogenesis using Z-shaped osteotomy to treat unilateral lambdoid synostosis.

Methods: Simulating the occipital, parietal, and temporal bones as a hemisphere, we designed a lambdoid suture that connected parallel osteotomy and sagittal sutures or extended to fossa cranii posterioras much like the parallel lines connect the upper and lower aspects of the letter Z. Two to 3 distraction devices were then installed after the Z-shaped osteotomy suture.

Apoptotic neuron-secreted HN12 inhibits cell apoptosis in Hirschsprung's disease.

Int J Nanomedicine

February 2017

Department of Pediatric Surgery, Nanjing Children's Hospital Affiliated to Nanjing Medical University; State Key Laboratory of Reproductive Medicine, Institute of Toxicology, School of Public Health.

Perturbation in apoptosis can lead to Hirschsprung's disease (HSCR), which is a genetic disorder of neural crest development. It is believed that long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) play a role in the progression of HSCR. This study shows that apoptotic neurons can suppress apoptosis of nonapoptotic cells by secreting exosomes that contain high levels of HN12 lncRNA.

Purpose: To assess the utility of internal distraction osteogenesis with Piezosurgery oblique osteotomy of supraorbital margin of frontal bone for the treatment of unilateral coronal synostosis and to study the outcome and complications of this procedure. Oblique osteotomy allows for entry into the cranial cavity, and along with parallel cut to the roof of the orbit, avoids the need to cut into the orbit which forms the frontal flap.

Methods: Oblique osteotomy was performed along the supraorbital rim to do a frontal suture of the glabella (ages of patients were less than 1 year) or on the opposite side of the supraorbital rim (ages of patients were older than 1 year) after performing a suturectomy of the effected coronal suture.

Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is the most common cancer originating from the nasopharynx, and can be induced by infection with Epstein-Barr virus (EBV). To study the mechanisms of EBV-associated NPC, a microarray of the GSE12452 dataset was analyzed. GSE12452 was downloaded from Gene Expression Omnibus and consisted of 31 NPC samples and 10 normal healthy nasopharyngeal tissue samples.

Type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM) is an organ-specific autoimmune disease characterized by chronic and progressive apoptotic destruction of pancreatic beta cells. During the initial phases of T1DM, cytokines and other inflammatory mediators released by immune cells progressively infiltrate islet cells, induce alterations in gene expression, provoke functional impairment, and ultimately lead to apoptosis. Long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) are a new important class of pervasive genes that have a variety of biological functions and play key roles in many diseases.

Tumor-associated macrophages promote invasion via Toll-like receptors signaling in patients with ovarian cancer.

Department of Laboratory Medicine, the First Affiliated Hospital of Nanjing Medical University, Nanjing 210029, China; National Key Clinical Department of Laboratory Medicine, Nanjing 210029, China. Electronic address:

Tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) derived from peripheral blood monocytes recruit into tumor microenvironment and display functions associated with tumor progression. The mechanisms by which TAMs display roles that associated with the invasion ability of ovarian cancer have not been well investigated. In our research, we found abundant TAMs infiltrate in ovarian cancer compared with benign ovarian tumor tissues.

State Key Laboratory of Reproductive Medicine, Institute of Toxicology, School of Public Health, Nanjing Medical University, Nanjing 211166, China; Key Laboratory of Modern Toxicology (Nanjing Medical University), Ministry of Education, China. Electronic address:

Hirschsprung disease (HSCR) is a genetic disorder of neural crest development. It is also believed that epigenetic changes plays a role in the progression of this disease. Here we show that the MIR143 host gene (MIR143HG), the precursor of miR-143 and miR-145, decreased cell proliferation and migration and forms a negative feedback loop with RBM24 in HSCR.

BDE47 induces rat CYP3A1 by targeting the transcriptional regulation of miR-23b.

Sci Rep

August 2016

Key Lab of Modern Toxicology of Ministry of Education, School of Public Health, Nanjing Medical University, 101 Longmian Avenue, Nanjing 211166, P. R. China.

Cytochrome P450 3A (CYP3A) is the most abundant CYP450 enzyme in the liver and is involved in the metabolism of over 50% of xenobiotics. Our previous studies revealed that 2,2',4,4'-tetrabromodiphenyl ether (BDE47) could induce rat CYP3A1 expression, but the molecular basis remains unclear. Using in silico analysis, we identified a potential miR-23b recognition element (MRE23b) in the 3'-UTR region of CYP3A1 mRNA, which was verified by the luciferase assay.

Accumulating evidence has shown that podocyte apoptosis is of vital importance for the development of glomerulosclerosis and progressive loss of renal function. However, the molecular mechanisms leading to podocyte apoptosis are still elusive. In this study, we investigated the role of estrogen-related receptor (ERR) γ in podocyte apoptosis, as well as the underlying mechanisms.

In this study, we aimed to assess the effects of microRNA-223 (miR-223) on interleukin-6 (IL-6) secretion in mast cells and determine the underlying molecular mechanisms. Mast cells (P815) were transfected with miR-223 lentiviral vector and miR-223 inhibitor. miR-223 expression was then evaluated using reverse transcription-quantitative PCR (RT-qPCR).
