Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • A multi-center study investigated liver conditions (steatosis and fibrosis) in patients with type 2 diabetes, specifically comparing lean individuals (BMI < 23 kg/m) to non-lean individuals (BMI ≥ 23 kg/m).
  • The study included 1,762 participants and discovered that lean patients experienced higher rates of liver steatosis (44.7%) and fibrosis (23.4%) along with more hypertension and cardiovascular issues.
  • Findings revealed that risk factors for liver steatosis vary significantly between lean and non-lean patients, suggesting the need for different management approaches based on body composition.

J Crit Care

February 2024

Jiangsu Provincial Key Laboratory of Critical Care Medicine, Department of Critical Care Medicine, Zhongda Hospital, School of Medicine, Southeast University, Nanjing 210009, China. Electronic address:

Background: Milrinone is widely used for enhancing myocardial contractility, however, there is inadequate data to suggest whether it is preferable to other inotropic agents in critically ill patients. To observe the effect of milrinone on prognosis in adult critically ill patients, we conducted this meta-analysis.

Methods: A search of the following databases was conducted: Medline, Elsevier, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials and Web of Science databases, and eligible randomized controlled trials including adult critically ill patients were screened.

PGC1α, a central player in mitochondrial biology, holds a complex role in the metabolic shifts seen in cancer cells. While its dysregulation is common across major cancers, its impact varies. In some cases, downregulation promotes aerobic glycolysis and progression, whereas in others, overexpression escalates respiration and aggression.

The Postural Instability/Gait Difficulty (PIGD) subtype of Parkinson's disease (PD) has a faster disease progression, a higher risk of cognitive and motor decline, yet the alterations of structural topological organization remain unknown. Diffusion Tensor Imaging (DTI) and 3D-TI scanning were conducted on 31 PD patients with PIGD (PD-PIGD), 30 PD patients without PIGD (PD-non-PIGD) and 35 Healthy Controls (HCs). Structural networks were constructed using DTI brain white matter fiber tractography.

About half of osteosarcomas occur near the knee joint, but other sites such as the humerus, upper femur, fibula, spine, and ilium can also occur. However, rib osteosarcoma is rarely reported. Here, we report the case of a 17-year-old female who was found to have a left dorsal mass on physical examination.

Drug-Loaded Zwitterion-Based Nanomotors for the Treatment of Spinal Cord Injury.

ACS Appl Mater Interfaces

July 2023

National and Local Joint Engineering Research Center of Biomedical Functional Materials, School of Chemistry and Materials Science, Nanjing Normal University, Nanjing 210023, China.

Spinal cord injury (SCI) treatment requires a nanosystem for drug delivery that can effectively penetrate the blood-spinal cord barrier (BSCB). Herein, we designed poly(2-methacryloyloxyethyl phosphorylgallylcholine) (PMPC)/l-arginine (PMPC/A)-based nanomotors that can release nitric oxide (NO). The nanomotors were loaded with the inducible NO synthase inhibitor 1400W and nerve growth factor (NGF).

Background: Although there were a variety of strategies for the alimentary tract reconstruction of patients with gastric cancer who underwent laparoscopic radical distal gastrectomy, it remains controversial regarding which procedure is optimal. We developed a simple technique for Roux-en-Y reconstruction during laparoscopic surgery and evaluated its technical feasibility and safety.

Methods: Seventy-one cases of modified Roux-en-Y reconstructions after laparoscopic radical distal gastrectomy were consecutively performed in our hospital, from November 2020 to March 2022.

Article Synopsis
  • The study classifies inpatients with new-onset diabetes in Eastern China into five distinct subgroups using cluster-based analysis, revealing significant differences in clinical characteristics.
  • A total of 1017 patients were analyzed, identifying severe insulin-deficient diabetes (SIDD) as the most common subtype, followed by mild age-related diabetes (MARD), mild obesity-related diabetes (MOD), severe insulin-resistant diabetes (SIRD), and severe autoimmune diabetes (SAID).
  • Each subgroup displayed unique treatment needs and varying risks for diabetes-related complications, with SIRD patients most likely to experience diabetic kidney disease and SAID patients at higher risk for diabetic ketoacidosis.

Exposure effects of inhaled nickel nanoparticles on the male reproductive system via mitochondria damage.

NanoImpact

July 2021

Key Laboratory of Environmental Medicine and Engineering, Ministry of Education; School of Public Health, Southeast University, Nanjing 210009, PR China. Electronic address:

Nickel nanoparticles (Ni NPs) have a wide range of application prospects, however there is still a lack of their safety evaluation for the reproductive system. Nowadays, male reproductive health has been widely concerned for the increasing incidence of male infertility. To investigate the male reproductive toxicity induced by Ni NPs and its relation with the mitochondrial fission and mitophagy, male mice were administered with or without 5, 15, and 45 mg/kg of Ni NPs by intratracheal instillation.

Advanced glycation end products (AGEs) have been widely reported to play an important role in osteoporosis (OP), particularly in diabetes‑related OP. The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of AGEs on osteoblast function and the underlying mechanisms. The level of bone mineral density (BMD), serum AGEs and fasting blood glucose (FBG) was measured in patients with OP and healthy individuals, and the correlation between AGE levels and BMD or FBG was then analyzed.
