Background: The rapid detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MTB) is essential for controlling tuberculosis. We designed a portable thermocycler-based real-time fluorescence loop-mediated isothermal amplification assay (cyp141-RealAmp) using six oligonucleotide primers derived from cyp141 to detect MTB. A combined number of 213 sputum samples (169 obtained from clinically diagnosed cases of pulmonary TB and 44 from a control group without tuberculosis) underwent Acid-fast bacillus (AFB) smear, culture, Xpert MTB/RIF assays, and cyp141-RealAmp assay.

  • The study aimed to analyze molecular transmission networks and patterns of transmitted drug resistance (TDR) among newly diagnosed HIV-1 individuals in Nanjing from 2019 to 2021.
  • Researchers collected plasma samples, amplified the HIV pol gene, and used the sequences to determine TDR and identify viral subtypes, discovering multiple subtypes with CRF 07_BC and CRF01_AE being the most prevalent.
  • The study found a 7.84% TDR prevalence, identified 137 molecular transmission clusters, and noted that older, unemployed individuals with specific viral strains were more likely to be part of these clusters, indicating high local HIV transmission risk.

Background: Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a major global health threat, particularly in China, contributing to over 40% of deaths. While sleep behaviors, sedentary behaviors, and physical activities are recognized as independent lifestyle risk factors for CVD, there remains limited understanding of specific movement behavior patterns and their CVD risks, especially considering sex-specific differences. This study examines movement behavior patterns among Chinese adults (40-75) and their associations with cardiovascular risk, with a focus on sleep, physical activity (PA), and sedentary behavior (SB).

February 2024

Department of Infectious Disease, The Second Hospital of Nanjing, Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine, Nanjing, China.

Background: Early and accurate etiological diagnosis is very important for improving the prognosis of central nervous system (CNS) infections in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients. The goal is not easily achieved by conventional microbiological tests. We developed a nanopore targeted sequencing (NTS) platform and evaluated the diagnostic performance for CNS infections in HIV-infected patients, with special focus on cryptococcal meningitis (CM).

Department of Periodontology, Jiangsu Province Key Laboratory of Oral Diseases, Jiangsu Province Engineering Research Center of Stomatological Translational Medicine, The Affiliated Stomatological Hospital of Nanjing Medical University, Nanjing, China.

Article Synopsis
  • Microbial contamination in dental chair units, particularly in suction pipelines, poses a risk of cross-infection, prompting the study to find an effective disinfectant and method for cleaning these areas.
  • The research tests various disinfectants, including double-chain quaternary ammonium salts and hydrogen peroxide, while conducting microbiological exams and other analyses on their effectiveness.
  • Results show that the quaternary ammonium disinfectant effectively reduces bacterial growth and biofilm without causing significant damage to the equipment, suggesting its potential for improving infection control in dental practices.

Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the cost-effectiveness of hepatitis E vaccination strategies in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) patients.

Methods: Based on the societal perspective, the cost-effectiveness of three hepatitis E vaccination strategies-vaccination without screening, screening-based vaccination, and no vaccination-among CHB patients was evaluated using a decision tree-Markov model, and incremental cost-effectiveness ratios (ICERs) were calculated. Values for treatment costs and health utilities were estimated from a prior investigation on disease burden, and values for transition probabilities and vaccination-related costs were obtained from previous studies and government agencies.
