Introduction: Laparoscopic salpingo-oophorectomy and pelvic lymphadenectomy place the ureter at risk. Although traditional anatomic studies indicate that ureters generally cross over the common iliac artery in the pelvic inlet, the view is often different during surgery. Hence, digital three-dimensional models have been utilized to solve this conundrum.

The role of secreted Hsp90α in HDM-induced asthmatic airway epithelial barrier dysfunction.

BMC Pulm Med

November 2019

Chronic Airways Diseases Laboratory, Department of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine, Nan Fang Hospital, Southern Medical University, Guangzhou, 510515, People's Republic of China.

Background: The dysfunction of airway epithelial barrier is closely related to the pathogenesis of asthma. Secreted Hsp90α participates in inflammation and Hsp90 inhibitor protects endothelial dysfunction. In the current study, we aimed to explore the role of secreted Hsp90α in asthmatic airway epithelial barrier function.

Eli and Edythe Broad Center for Regenerative Medicine and Stem Cell Research at USC, Department of Stem Cell Biology & Regenerative Medicine, Keck School of Medicine, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA 90033, United States of America. Electronic address:

Article Synopsis
  • Neural stem cells (NSCs) originate early in embryonic development and are initially biased towards becoming neurons, but maintaining them long-term in lab conditions is difficult.
  • This study outlines a new culture method that successfully allows for the long-term preservation and clonal propagation of Sox1-positive NSCs, which can efficiently differentiate into specific types of neurons from the anterior and midbrain regions.
  • The research also shows that these early-stage NSCs can be transitioned to late-stage NSCs capable of developing into astrocytes and oligodendrocytes, suggesting significant potential for cell-based therapies for nervous system disorders.

Article Synopsis
  • Researchers used differential proteomic technology to analyze urine samples from pregnant women with gestational hypertension, mild and severe preeclampsia, and normal pregnancies, identifying 30 unique proteins.
  • They found that levels of certain proteins, like L‑PGDS and perlecan, were elevated in gestational hypertension but decreased in preeclampsia, while other proteins like serum albumin were the opposite.
  • The study highlights the potential of urine proteomics to identify biomarkers for different hypertensive disorders during pregnancy, with L‑PGDS and perlecan possibly indicating renal function and injury.

Because of a general lack of knowledge regarding the precise anatomy of the seminal vesicle system, efforts to use transurethral seminal vesiculoscopy (TSV) are currently constrained. We investigated 26 normal adult male specimens. Contrast medium was injected into the seminal vesicle system in 18 specimens and the openings of the ejaculatory ducts were examined with an operating microscope.

Background: In order to reduce the irritation of the airway during tracheobronchial foreign body (TFB) removal, tracheal surface anesthesia is usually performed using a laryngotracheal topical anesthesia (LTA) kit (LTA20, Highgreen Medical Technology Company, China), but difficulty in withdrawing the LTA kit is rarely reported. We present a case of a difficulty to withdraw the LTA kit due to its entrapment by the movement of a TFB.

Case Presentation: A 1-year-old girl was undergoing TFB removal.

Triple‑negative breast cancer (TNBC) is a highly aggressive breast cancer subtype that lacks effective targeted therapies. In the present study, we revealed that the expression of miR‑30a was significantly decreased in TNBC, and TNBC patients with low expression of miR‑30a were associated with high histological grade and more lymph node metastasis. Moreover, we found that miR‑30a suppressed TNBC cell epithelial‑mesenchymal transition (EMT), as demonstrated by the overexpression of miR‑30a which increased the expression of epithelial marker E‑cadherin but decreased the expression of mesenchymal markers N‑cadherin and vimentin.

Although studies have shown that detection of peripheral circulating tumor cells (CTCs) is an important tool for monitoring prognosis and therapeutic response in patients with cancer, few studies have analyzed their role in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) following liver transplantation (LTx). The present study examined whether CTC levels were associated with HCC recurrence in patients with HCC after LTx. This prospective study included 47 patients who received LTx between October 2014 and May 2016 and who underwent analysis for peripheral CTCs at least twice using the CanPatrol system.

PLoS One

September 2017

Department of Plastic and Aesthetic Surgery, Nan Fang Hospital, Southern Medical University, Guangzhou, Guangdong, China.

Organ regeneration is becoming a promising choice for many patients; however, many details about the mechanisms underlying organ regeneration remain unknown. As regenerative organs, hair follicles offer a good model to study the mechanisms associated with regenerative medicine. The relevant studies have mainly focused on donor cells, and there are no systematic studies involving the effect of host factors on hair follicle reconstruction.
