Background: Previous reports from relatively small clinical cohorts have suggested that the clinical presentation of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) differs between men and women.

Objective: We aimed to explore sex differences in clinical and polysomnographic features of OSA in a large nationwide registry.

Methods: Participants from the ongoing Turkish Sleep Apnea Database (TURKAPNE) Study from 34 centers were included in the current analysis.

To compare the predictive effects of stone size and volume on the efficacy and safety of retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) and to determine the cutoff values of stone volume for prediction of RIRS efficacy and safety. Patients who underwent RIRS between 2017 and 2021 in six referral centers were retrospectively included in the study. The database of the RIRsearch group, which was formed prospectively, was used for this retrospective analysis.

Background: Morphological properties such as length and tortuosity of the large intestine segments play important roles, especially in interventional procedures like colonoscopy.

Objective: Using computed tomography (CT) colonoscopy images, this study aimed to examine the morphological features of the colon's anatomical sections and investigate the relationship of these sections with each other or with age groups. The shapes of the transverse colon were analyzed using artificial intelligence.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to explore how hemodialysis membranes affect DNA damage and repair in end-stage renal failure patients, focusing on gene expression involved in repairing oxidative damage.
  • The researchers measured the expression of specific repair genes in 20 ESRD patients before and after dialysis and compared it to 20 healthy individuals using real-time PCR methods.
  • Results showed no overall impact of the dialysis process on gene expression, but a significant decrease in PARP1 gene expression in ESRD patients indicates potential impairment in their DNA repair mechanisms, which could influence disease progression.

Approaches for the induction of neurogenesis and neuronal recovery through several modalities are gaining popularity in Parkinson's disease (PD). Growth hormone (GH) seems to have a role in the reversal of neural function following brain injury as well as in normal brain development and function; therefore, the use of GH may represent a feasible strategy in the management of PD. This experimental study aimed to evaluate the effect of growth hormone on motor function and dendrite morphology in rats with 6-hydroxydopamine (6-OHDA)-induced PD model.

Reusable flexible ureteroscopes may lose their mechanical functionality through overuse, which is known as "aging of the flexible ureteroscope." Although mechanical deterioration has been shown in several studies, the data about the effect of this situation on the efficacy and safety of retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) are missing. The aim of our study was to evaluate the effect of the aging of flexible ureteroscopes on the efficacy and safety of RIRS.

Article Synopsis
  • Intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR) happens when a baby doesn’t grow as much as it should inside the mom, which can affect their size and development.
  • The study looked at babies with a condition called congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) to see how IUGR impacts their lung development, using data from patients diagnosed between 2007 and 2016.
  • Results showed that IUGR babies with smaller lung measurements had better survival rates and needed less medical support after birth compared to non-IUGR babies, suggesting that ultrasound measurements might not be accurate for these babies.

Objective: To evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of ultrasonography (USG) and kidney ureter bladder radiography (KUB) for the determination of stone-free status of retrograde intrarenal surgery (RIRS) according to different stone-free status definitions.

Materials And Methods: The patients who underwent RIRS between September 2021 and September 2022 were prospectively included in the study. All patients underwent a KUB radiography, urinary system USG and noncontrast abdominal tomography at the postoperative first month of the surgery.

White vinegar which contains high concentrations (~85 %) of acetic acid is a staple ingredient used in food preparation in many Mediterranean cuisines but in small amounts. Being corrosive, it can cause ulcerative injury to the oropharynx and oesophagus and upset the stomach with resulting nausea and vomiting. This study presents 11 cases of paediatric patients (five boys and six girls, aged between 11 and 89 months) with oesophageal strictures who drank white vinegar by accident.

Article Synopsis
  • * The research included data from 1839 patients over 18 years, finding that about 7.7% had burns and identifying key predictors like the type of caustic substance and specific blood parameters.
  • * The use of machine learning showed promising accuracy, with the prediction models achieving up to 91.66% accuracy, highlighting the potential for AI to improve treatment decisions for young patients who have ingested harmful substances.

Purpose: There is a lack of studies in the literature to evaluate the impact of the specific benefit of the use of neo-adjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) on the negative effect of lymphovascular invasion (LVI) on prognosis. We aimed to evaluate the survival differences of patients according to the presence of LVI with and without administration of NAC before radical cystectomy (RC).

Materials And Methods: We retrospectively evaluated data of the patients who underwent RC with pelvic lymphadenectomy and urinary diversion for bladder cancer recorded in the bladder cancer database of the Turkish Uro-oncology Association between 2007 and 2021.

This study aimed to investigate the duration of diagnostic delay in patients with psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and identify potential contributing factors using a comprehensive, population-based approach. Data were obtained from the Turkish League Against Rheumatism (TLAR)-Network, involving patients who met the CASPAR criteria. Diagnostic delay was defined as time interval from symptom onset to PsA diagnosis, categorized as ≤ 2 years and > 2 years.

Citalopram is a selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitor (SSRI) antidepressant; it exhibits the greatest cardiotoxic effect among SSRIs. Citalopram can cause drug-induced long QT syndrome (LQTS) and ventricular arrhythmias. We investigated the protective effect of nicorandil, a selective mitochondrial K (mito-K) channel opener, on LQTS and myocardial damage caused by citalopram in male rats.

Ionizing radiation (IR) exposures have increased exponentially in recent years due to the rise in diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. A number of small-scale studies investigated the long-term effect of IR on health workers or immediate effects of IR on patients undergoing catheterization procedures; however, the long-term impact of multiple cardiac catheterizations on DNA damage on a patient population is not known. In this study, the effects of IR on DNA damage, based on micronuclei (MN) frequency and 8-hydroxy-2'-deoxyguanosine (8-OHdG) as markers in peripheral lymphocytes, were evaluated in patients who previously underwent multiple cardiac catheterization procedures.

This study aims to investigate the relationship between disease duration and psychological burden in PsA and to identify the risk factors associated with psychological distress. Patients with PsA who met CASPAR classification criteria enrolled by Turkish League Against Rheumatism (TLAR)-Network. Patients were categorized into three groups based on disease duration: early stage (< 5 years), middle stage (≥ 5, < 10 years), and late stage (≥ 10 years).

Studies on the relationship between stathmin 1 (STMN1) and cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (cSCC) are limited. We aimed to evaluate the relationship between clinicopathological factors and STMN1 and p53 expressions in cSCC and compare them with those in the precursor lesions of cSCC and normal tissue. A total of 195 patients, followed between January 2014 and December 2021, with diagnoses of primary cSCC (n = 129), in situ cSCC (n = 20), or actinic keratosis (n = 46), as well as 29 histopathologically normal tissue samples, were included in the study.
