Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the progression of chronic kidney disease in individuals with type 2 diabetes diagnosed at a young age (≤40 years) compared to those diagnosed later (>40 years) in a Japanese multicenter cohort.
  • Among 626 participants, young-onset type 2 diabetes is associated with a significantly lower incidence of reduced eGFR (<60 mL/min/1.73 m²) but a higher incidence of proteinuria compared to late-onset diabetes.
  • The findings suggest that young-onset type 2 diabetes has a distinct progression pattern, showing less risk for eGFR decline but greater risk for developing proteinuria compared to late-onset cases.

To ascertain the involvement of insulin receptors (IRs) in colorectal carcinogenesis, we investigated the association of height, body mass index (BMI), and physical activity with colorectal cancer (CRC) and two subtypes of CRC according to the expression level of IR. We utilized data from a large-scale, population-based prospective cohort study of 18,158 middle-aged and elderly subjects in Akita and Okinawa, Japan. In the statistical analysis, we used the Cox proportional hazards model and estimated hazard ratios (HRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the risk of CRC and its subtypes as defined by immunohistochemistry of IRβ, a transmembrane subunit of IR.

In Japan, only single-unit cord blood transplantations (CBTs) are typically performed, and their number has increased over the last 23 years, with ongoing improvement in results. In most cases, CBTs with multiple HLA mismatches are used, owing to a low HLA barrier, and lower engraftment rate is a problem that must be overcome. Here, as part of an effort to improve guidelines for the selection and processing of CB units for transplantation, we sought to assess the present status of CBT in Japan and to elucidate factors contributing to the favorable outcomes, focusing in particular on selection by cell components of CB unit and HLA allele matching.
