Sci Rep

January 2025

Department of Conservative Dentistry and Endodontics, Saveetha Dental College and Hospitals, Saveetha Institute of Medical and Technical Sciences, Saveetha University, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, 600077, India.

Polydopamine (PD), inspired by the wet adhesion mechanism of mussel foot proteins, has emerged as a promising adhesive material with wide-ranging applications. This study aimed to compare the adhesive properties of PD and Glass Ionomer Cement (GIC) on enamel and dentin substrates, evaluating PD's potential as an alternative adhesive in dental practice. A total of 120 human premolars were prepared, with 80 teeth allocated for Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis and 40 teeth reserved for shear bond strength testing.

The quality of life of primary caretakers of children with cerebral palsy.

J Family Med Prim Care

October 2024

Department of Pediatrics, TN Medical College and BYL Nair Hospital, Mumbai Central, Mumbai, Maharashtra, India.

Background: Cerebral palsy (CP) is a heterogeneous group of disorder affecting the development of movement and posture, which is permanent nonprogressive. Previous studies in different regions have shown links between caregivers' mental health and children's well-being. However, the lack of such detailed research for the caretakers of children with CP and correlation of quality of life affected the type and severity of the condition; this necessitates the development of a new study to assess caregivers' quality of life.

Background: Meningococcal disease remains an important public health problem globally. We assessed the non-inferiority and the lot-to-lot consistency of a pentavalent meningococcal ACYWX conjugate vaccine (NmCV-5; Serum Institute of India, Pune, India) versus a quadrivalent meningococcal ACWY conjugate vaccine (MenACWY-D) in healthy adults.

Methods: In this observer-blind, randomised, active-controlled, phase 2/3 study, healthy adults aged 18-85 years were recruited from nine hospitals across seven cities in India.

Introduction: The physical and chemical properties of calcium silicate cement might be affected due to exposure to acidic or alkaline conditions during clinical use. The present study aimed to evaluate the effect of acidic and alkaline environments on the surface morphology of biodentine (BD) and white mineral trioxide aggregate (wMTA).

Materials And Method: Disc-shaped specimens of BD (n = 30) and wMTA (n = 30) were prepared in a metal mould and wrapped in pieces of gauze.

Background Burn injuries pose a significant global public health challenge, causing substantial morbidity and mortality, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Timely and effective wound coverage is critical in treating severe burns to prevent infection, reduce pain, and promote healing. Cadaveric skin grafts (allografts) have become essential in treating extensive burn wounds, serving as temporary biological dressings to prepare the wound bed for autografting.

Extracting a single lower front tooth can be an appropriate treatment for class I malocclusions when the alignment of the upper teeth is normal and there is an adequate overlap of the teeth. This approach is particularly effective in cases of significant crowding in the lower front teeth, especially when the space deficiency exceeds 4-5 mm and the combined width of the lower front teeth surpasses 83 mm. It is also a viable option for malocclusions resulting from discrepancies in tooth size, such as narrower upper front teeth or larger lower front teeth.

Efficacy of Apical Negative Pressure Irrigation in Primary Teeth: A Smear Layer Analysis.

Int J Clin Pediatr Dent

June 2024

Unit of Public Health Dentistry, Faculty of Dental Sciences, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, India.

Article Synopsis
  • This study evaluated how effectively the Endo-Irrigator Plus (CWAIS) system removes debris from root canals in primary teeth compared to traditional irrigation methods.
  • Twenty-five primary mandibular first molars were tested in five different groups, using various irrigation techniques and analyzing the results using environmental scanning electron microscopy (SEM).
  • The findings revealed that groups using the Endo-Irrigator Plus showed significantly better debris removal, especially in the apical third of the canal, compared to those using only positive pressure irrigation.

Evaluation of antioxidant status of lens epithelial cells in cataract patients.

Indian J Ophthalmol

October 2024

Departments of Vitreo-Retina and Ocular Oncology and Cataract, and Phacorefractive Surgery, Sankara Eye Hospital, Shimoga, Karnataka, India.

Purpose: The main factor that causes cataracts is the increased oxidative stress and imbalance of an antioxidant defense mechanism, which leads to significant changes in the lens microarchitecture. Senile cataract is the most common type of acquired cataracts due to aging.

Methods: We carried out a case-control study in the biochemistry department to examine the antioxidant status (catalase and total antioxidant capacity [TAC]) and lipid peroxidation marker, that is, malondialdehyde (MDA) in human lens epithelial cells (HLECs) of different grades of senile cortical, nuclear, and posterior subcapsular cataracts.

  • Familial adenomatous polyposis (FAP) leads to multiple colorectal polyps and has various oral manifestations, making it significant in the context of DF.
  • A case study of a 5-year-old with DF showed no recurrence after surgery, and subsequent genetic testing identified FAP, highlighting the need for careful diagnosis and genetic screening in similar cases.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examines how M1 and M2 macrophages contribute to oral submucous fibrosis (OSF) and its possible progression to cancer by analyzing specific protein markers (CD11c for M1 and CD163 for M2).
  • Researchers performed immunohistochemistry on tissue samples from various stages of OSF, along with squamous cell carcinoma cases, to evaluate the expression levels of these markers.
  • Findings suggest that the balance between M1 and M2 macrophages, especially the increased M2 polarization in later stages of OSF and cancer, may be key to understanding the disease's progression and malignancy.

A straightforward technique is presented for correcting the position of an inaccurately oriented implant analog in a digitally printed definitive cast. The technique enables the operator to reposition the analog accurately in the definitive cast and obviates the need of an additional scanning procedure or printing a new cast. The technique also permits accurate reproduction of the soft tissue contours around the implant.
