Sternal fractures resulting from blunt chest trauma often present unique surgical challenges. While conservative management is common, cases with significant displacement, delayed union, or painful dyspnea may require surgical intervention to improve structural stability and relieve symptoms. Here, we report the case of a 46-year-old man who sustained a displaced sternal fracture in a motor vehicle accident.

A 79-year-old man presented with acute-onset coldness and severe pain in his left foot 4 hours prior. His foot (distal to the left Lisfranc joint) was pale and cold with slight motor and sensory deficits. Angiography demonstrated occlusion of the lateral plantar artery and plantar metatarsal arteries (PMAs).

Background/aim: The COVID-19 pandemic brought many challenges in healthcare systems globally. Pegylated granulocyte colony stimulating factor (PEG-GCSF) is recommended to reduce febrile neutropenia (FN), however there are a few reports that G-CSF might worsen COVID-19 disease, and its appropriate use during the COVID-19 pandemic remains uncertain. This retrospective study aimed to analyze the association between PEG-GCSF use and COVID-19 infection and severity.

Successful chemical ablation for intraventricular septal ventricular tachycardia-An alternative approach to the septal branch.

Trans-coronary ethanol ablation for ventricular tachycardia originating from the ventricular septum is effective, but there are cases with no septal perforator from left anterior descending artery. CT and angiography can reveal the optimal vessel.

The Partial Iliopubic Tract Resection Technique for Incarcerated Femoral Hernia: A Case Series and a Literature Review.

Femoral hernias have a high incarceration rate, often necessitating urgent surgical intervention. In this report, we present a safe and reproducible laparoscopic technique for incarcerated femoral hernias with bowel involvement, including repair. Between December 2022 and May 2023, three female patients with incarcerated femoral hernias underwent urgent laparoscopic surgery.

Emergency Open Surgical Repair for Ruptured Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm in Octogenarians and Nonagenarians: A Single-Center Retrospective Observational Study.

Background: In the endovascular aneurysm repair era, open surgical repair (OSR) is performed for ruptured abdominal aorta aneurysm (RAAA) in patients with complex aneurysm neck and technical difficulties. Understanding the risk factors of OSR is essential for the clinical selection of the ideal surgical procedure. We aimed to re-evaluate the outcomes of OSR and treatment options for RAAA.

A Case of Chronic Pulmonary Aspergillosis due to Pulmonary Infarction, Mimicking Cryptogenic Organising Pneumonia.

Unlabelled: A patient initially treated with corticosteroids for cryptogenic organising pneumonia following pulmonary infarction, developed a worsening condition with progressive cavitary formations in both lower lung lobes. Contrast-enhanced chest computed tomography revealed a pulmonary embolism, and serum anti-Aspergillus IgG antibody analysis yielded a strong positive result. Consequently, the patient was diagnosed with pulmonary infarction with Aspergillus infection; organising pneumonia in surrounding areas reflected the repair process.

Pulmonary Tumor Thrombotic Microangiopathy Suspected to be COVID-19 Vaccine-Related Myocarditis: A Case Report.

Pulmonary tumor thrombotic microangiopathy (PTTM) is a very rare condition that can lead to acute severe pulmonary hypertension and circulatory failure. It is caused by tumor cell microvascular obstruction and is usually difficult to diagnose; in fact, it is often diagnosed after death. We report the case of a patient who experienced a sudden cardiac arrest and developed severe pulmonary hypertension two days after receiving the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) vaccine.

Introduction Anastomotic leakage is a serious complication in colon and rectal cancer surgeries, contributing to increased mortality rates and extended hospital stays. Despite various preventive measures, including intraoperative assessments and transanal drains, the incidence of anastomotic leakage remains a significant concern. This study investigates the potential efficacy of polyglycolic acid (PGA) sheets in reducing anastomotic leakage rates in gastrointestinal surgeries.

Temporary Epicardial Pacing Wire Migration to the Pulmonary Artery in the Early Postoperative Stage.

Temporary epicardial pacing wires (TEPWs) are widely used during open heart surgery to treat postoperative bradycardia or arrhythmia. They are usually removed, but the wire is cut at the skin entrance site if there is resistance upon removal. Residual TEPWs have risks of complications such as infection, but they rarely migrate to distant organs.

A case of surgical treatment for bronchial foreign bodies with obstructive pneumonia.

Children and older adults are prone to unintentional foreign body aspiration. A 69-year-old man with fever and anorexia presented with obstructive pneumonia resulting from foreign body aspiration. Attempts to remove the foreign body using a bronchoscope failed due to its adhesion to the periphery of the bronchus.

Coil Embolization for Asymptomatic Low-grade Vertebral Artery Injury which Worsened after Cervical Decompression Surgery: A Case Report.

Introduction: Blunt cervical injuries rarely cause vertebral artery injuries (VAIs), such as vertebral artery (VA) dissection or occlusion. To prevent subsequent embolic infarction, embolization of the injured VA is needed before surgical fixation of the cervical spine. However, evidence on endovascular treatment for asymptomatic low-grade VAIs with blunt traumatic cervical injury is insufficient.

Pathogenesis of chemically induced nasal cavity tumors in rodents: contribution to adverse outcome pathway.

The pathogenesis of nasal cavity tumors induced in rodents has been critically reviewed. Chemical substances that induce nasal cavity tumors in rats, mice, and hamsters were searched in the National Toxicology Program (NTP), International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), and Japan Bioassay Research Center (JBRC) databases, in addition to PubMed. Detailed data such as animal species, administration routes, and histopathological types were extracted for induced nasal cavity tumors.

Congenital factor XI deficiency with multiple tooth extractions (Case report).

Congenital factor XI deficiency (CFXI) is a rare blood disorder that occurs in one of every one million individuals. Given its rarity, there are very few reports of surgical procedures performed in the oral region CFXI patients. The present study reports the case of a 43-year-old man with CFXI who experienced multiple tooth extractions.

PET Scanning May Not Distinguish Benign Schwannoma from Metastasis in a Patient with Lung Adenocarcinoma.

Unlabelled: A 69-year-old man was diagnosed with lung adenocarcinoma with metastasis because two masses in the right intercostal space and right back muscle showed high accumulation on positron emission tomography (PET). The 6-month treatment with osimertinib significantly reduced his lung lesion, but no changes were observed in the metastatic lesions. Needle biopsy revealed that the lesion in the right back muscle was a schwannoma.

Experiences in Emergency Cardiac Surgery of COVID-19-Positive Patients: A Case Series.

The coronavirus disease-2019 (COVID-19) pandemic has placed many restrictions on medical care. The timing of surgical treatment has been particularly affected, with patients experiencing delayed operation dates. This report describes three patients with preoperative COVID-19-positive diagnoses, tested with reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction, who were urgently treated surgically with excellent results.

Elevated eosinophils proportion as predictor of immune-related adverse events after ipilimumab and nivolumab treatment of advanced and metastatic renal cell carcinoma.

Objectives: Ipilimumab and nivolumab treatment against advanced and metastatic renal cell carcinoma (RCC) causes severe and lethal immune-related adverse events (irAEs). Predicting irAEs might improve clinical outcomes, however no practical biomarkers exist. This study examined whether eosinophils could be effective biomarkers for ≥grade 2 irAEs in RCC.

Hemoglobin and neutrophil levels stratified according to International Metastatic Renal Cell Carcinoma Database Consortium risk predict the effectiveness of ipilimumab plus nivolumab in patients with advanced metastatic renal cell carcinoma.

Objective: To identify biomarkers associated with the effectiveness of ipilimumab plus nivolumab against advanced metastatic renal cell carcinoma.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the data of 75 patients treated with ipilimumab plus nivolumab at seven hospitals between August 2018 and April 2021. Prognostic biomarkers were assessed prior to initiating treatment with ipilimumab plus nivolumab.

Utility of cardiac magnetic resonance imaging for pre-operatively evaluating the degree of caseous calcification of the mitral annulus infiltration within the left ventricular myocardium: a case report.

Background: Depending on the degree of infiltration of dry mitral annulus calcification (MAC) into the left ventricular myocardium, calcification removal may cause thinning of the left ventricular wall and increase the risk of post-operative left ventricular rupture. Therefore, the degree of pre-operative infiltration into the left ventricular myocardium should be assessed as accurately as possible. We report a case of caseous calcification of the mitral annulus (CCMA), a subtype of MAC, in an 84-year-old woman; cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was useful in assessing the degree of left ventricular infiltration of calcification.

Simultaneous robot-assisted colorectal surgery for sigmoid colon cancer and portal vein embolization from the inferior mesenteric vein for intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma: A case report and literature review.

Introduction And Importance: The treatment of multiple cancers requires multidisciplinary expertise. In this case, we experienced a multiple cancers case, sigmoid colon cancer and intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma that required preoperative portal vein embolization (PVE). PVE is often approached by trans-hepatic percutaneous approach or via ileocecal vein (ICV) or veins of the small intestine.
