Background: To evaluate the depictability of pericardiacophrenic veins (PCPV) as landmarks for the location of the phrenic nerves on multi-detector-row computed tomography (MDCT), and to investigate the usefulness of depicting the PCPV to aid differential diagnosis of anterior mediastinal lesions.
Methods: Fifty-six patients with anterior mediastinal lesions (Fifty lesions originated from the thymus, six were of non-thymic origin) were evaluated. Contrast-enhanced CT scans of the chest were performed in all cases before diagnosis, and 22 of these scans were performed with electrocardiographic (ECG) gating.

In this study, we evaluate dosimetric advantages of using patient-specific aperture system with intensity-modulated proton therapy (IMPT) for head and neck tumors at the shallow depth. We used four types of patient-specific aperture system (PSAS) to irradiate shallow regions less than 4 g/cm with a sharp lateral penumbra. Ten head and neck IMPT plans with or without aperture were optimized separately with the same 95% prescription dose and same dose constraint for organs at risk (OARs).

Background: Hypofractionated proton therapy (HFPT) is expected to become an effective treatment approach for localized prostate cancer (PCa). The purpose of this study was to evaluate differences in acute toxicity among patients with localized PCa treated with either conventional fractionated proton therapy (CFPT) or HFPT.
Methods: A total of 526 eligible patients treated with proton therapy between February 2013 and May 2016 in three phase II trials were analyzed.

Purpose: In order to clarify the biological response of tumor cells to proton beam irradiation, sublethal damage recovery (SLDR) and potentially lethal damage recovery (PLDR) induced after proton beam irradiation at the center of a 10 cm spread-out Bragg peak (SOBP) were compared with those seen after X‑ray irradiation.
Methods: Cell survival was determined by a colony assay using EMT6 and human salivary gland tumor (HSG) cells. First, two doses of 4 Gy/GyE (Gray equivalents, GyE) were given at an interfraction interval of 0-6 h.

The Guideline Committee of the Japan Lung Cancer Society (JLCS) for Thymic Tumors published the Medical Practice Guideline for Thymic Tumors in Japanese as Chapter 3 of the Medical Practice Guidelines for Lung Cancers according to evidence-based medicine in December 2016. This medical practice guideline is the first for thymic epithelial tumors in Japan, and comprises a set of recommendations covering clinical diagnosis, treatment and pathological diagnosis. Thymic epithelial tumors include thymoma, thymic carcinoma and thymic neuroendocrine tumor.

Definitive radiotherapy is an important alternative treatment for meningioma patients who are inoperable or refuse surgery. We evaluated the efficacy and toxicity of CyberKnife-based stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) and hypofractionated stereotactic radiotherapy (hSRT) as first-line treatments for intracranial meningiomas that were diagnosed using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and/or computed tomography (CT). Between February 2005 and September 2015, 41 patients with intracranial meningiomas were treated with CyberKnife-based SRS or hSRT.

Background And Aim: Endoscopic biliary and duodenal stenting (DS; double stenting) is widely accepted as a palliation therapy for malignant bilioduodenal obstruction. The aim of the current study was to investigate the patency and adverse events of duodenal and biliary stents in patients with DS.
Methods: Patients who underwent DS from April 2004 to March 2017 were analyzed retrospectively with regard to clinical outcomes and predictive factors of recurrent biliary and duodenal obstruction (recurrent biliary obstruction [RBO] and recurrent duodenal obstruction [RDO]).

Background: Efficacy of stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) in stage I non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) has almost been established. In Japan, the protocol of 48 Gy in 4 fractions over 4 days has been most often employed, but higher doses may be necessary to control large tumors. Previously, we conducted a clinical study using SBRT for stage I NSCLC employing different doses depending on tumor diameter, which was closed in 2008.

There have been few reports on 2 tumor necrosis factor alpha inhibitors, infliximab and adalimumab, with respect to patient preference and efficacy in ulcerative colitis (UC).We used questionnaires to evaluate the preference and reasons for drug choice between infliximab and adalimumab in UC patients naive to antitumor necrosis factor alpha therapy. We also analyzed the efficacy of infliximab and adalimumab prospectively and endoscopically before treatment and at 14 and 54 weeks.

A standard symptomatic therapy regimen of bevacizumab(BV)plus paclitaxel(PTX)was planned for use in 3 cases of metastatic breast cancer. Due to poor patient performance status(PS)because of malignant pleural effusion and ascites, the initial standard regimen was determined to be unsuitable. However, adjustment and fine-tuning of the BV plus PTX interval and dosage were found to be effective in improving symptoms, and consequently obtained good efficacy.

Objective: Several studies have suggested that objective deficits in the processing of abstract information in conjunction with an enhanced ability to process concrete information is a definitive characteristic of autism spectrum disorder (ASD). However, this cognitive imbalance is not necessarily clear in high-functioning autistic individuals who do not display absolute differences relative to typically developing (TD) populations. Thus, the purpose of this study was to identify this cognitive tendency in high-functioning autistic individuals using intra-individual cognitive comparisons.

Background: We measured changes in the blood level of high-mobility group box-1 (HMGB-1) at 24 h intervals in neonates treated with brain/body hypothermia (body hypothermia therapy: BHT) for hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy (HIE), to evaluate the usefulness of HMGB-1 level for determining outcomes.
Methods: We studied 15 neonates with HIE who underwent BHT (BHT (+) group) and six neonates with HIE who did not (BHT (-) group). We recorded HMGB-1 changes at 24 h intervals, creatinine phosphokinase, and the resistance index of the anterior cerebral artery.

Gastric antral vascular ectasia (GAVE) is known to be characterized by red patches or spots in a diffuse or linear array in the antrum of the stomach. The precise etiology of GAVE remains to be elucidated. Argon plasma laser coagulation (APC) has been used to control oozing from GAVE; however, there is no satisfactory long-term effect of APC in the control of oozing from GAVE.

Humoral hypercalcemia of malignancy (HHM) is caused by the oversecretion of parathyroid hormone-related peptide (PTHrP) from malignant tumors. Although any tumor may cause HHM, that induced by intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma (ICC) or gastric cancer (GC) is rare. We report here a 74-year-old male who displayed HHM with both ICC and GC and showed an elevated serum PTHrP level.

Background: In this phase I/II study, we assessed the safety and initial efficacy of stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT) for lung tumors with real-time tumor tracking using CyberKnife based on the Monte Carlo algorithm.
Methods: Study subjects had histologically confirmed primary non-small-cell lung cancer staged as T1a-T2aN0M0 and pulmonary oligometastasis. The primary endpoint was the incidence of Grade ≥3 radiation pneumonitis (RP) within 180 days of the start of SBRT.

Background: Endoscopic metallic stenting is widely accepted as a palliation therapy for malignant gastric outlet obstruction (GOO). However, the predictors of stent dysfunction have not been clarified. We aimed to evaluate the predictors, especially tumor ingrowth in uncovered self-expandable metallic stents (U-SEMS) and migration of covered self-expandable metallic stents (C-SEMS), which are the main causes related to the stent characteristics.
