Ten-Year Clinical Outcomes of Endoscope-Assisted Minimally Invasive Surgical Decompression for Lumbar Spinal Stenosis with Degenerative Spondylolisthesis and Comparison with Conservative Treatment.

Introduction: This study aimed to evaluate the 10-year clinical outcomes of endoscope-assisted, minimally invasive surgical (MIS) decompression for lumbar spinal canal stenosis (LSS) with lumbar degenerative spondylolisthesis (DS) and to compare the radiographic changes in patients who underwent this procedure with those who underwent conservative therapy at 10-year follow-up.

Methods: Between April 2007 and April 2010, 347 consecutive patients with DS and evidence of LSS underwent conservative treatment first from 2 to 4 weeks. The 114 patients who failed conservative treatment were then treated surgically by endoscope-assisted MIS decompression.

Effect of asthma, COPD, and ACO on COVID-19: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

Introduction: The prevalence of asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), and asthma-COPD overlap (ACO) in patients with COVID-19 varies, as well as their risks of mortality. The present study aimed to assess the prevalence of asthma, COPD, and ACO as comorbidities, and to determine their risks of mortality in patients with COVID-19 using a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Methods: We systematically reviewed clinical studies that reported the comorbidities of asthma, COPD, and ACO in patients with COVID-19.

Simultaneous-onset infectious spondylitis with vertebral fracture mimicking an acute osteoporotic vertebral fracture erroneously treated with balloon kyphoplasty: illustrative case.

Background: Early balloon kyphoplasty (BKP) intervention for acute osteoporotic vertebral fracture (OVF) has been reported to be more effective than the conservative treatment. However, complications of early BKP intervention are still unknown.

Observations: A 71-year-old patient with OVF of L2 underwent BKP 2 weeks after symptom onset.

A 69-year-old woman without pre-existing disease visited our hospital due to general malaise, diarrhea, and arthralgia 3 days after a uterine cancer test. We diagnosed her with sepsis of unknown focus and started treatment immediately, but she died 20 hours after the first visit due to multi-organ failure and septic shock. Later, group A streptococcus was detected from the blood culture, and streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS) was diagnosed.

Outcome and Late Complications of Hepatoblastomas Treated Using the Japanese Study Group for Pediatric Liver Tumor 2 Protocol.

Purpose: We report here the outcomes and late effects of the Japanese Study Group for Pediatric Liver Tumors (JPLT)-2 protocol, on the basis of cisplatin-tetrahydropyranyl-adriamycin (CITA) with risk stratification according to the pretreatment extent of disease (PRETEXT) classification for hepatoblastoma (HB).

Patients And Methods: From 1999 to 2012, 361 patients with untreated HB were enrolled. PRETEXT I/II patients were treated with up-front resection, followed by low-dose CITA (stratum 1) or received low-dose CITA, followed by surgery and postoperative chemotherapy (stratum 2).

This study aimed to compare the osteoconductivity between untreated titanium (Ti), anodically oxidized titanium (AO-Ti), and iodine-supported titanium (I-Ti) screws.

We conducted a multicenter, controlled, open-label study to compare the safety and efficacy of artificial nerve conduit grafts with those of autologous nerve grafts.

Methods: We included patients with a sensory nerve defect of ≤30 mm, at the level of the wrist or a more distal location, with the first-line surgical methods selected according to a patient's preference.

Objective: Tinnitus is an auditory sensation that can cause discomfort or even pain. Because patients with tinnitus frequently have psychological problems, self-reporting of the severity of tinnitus is unreliable. We developed a new grading system and practical protocol for the systematic treatment of tinnitus that accounts for its severity, patients' psychological problems, and the frequency of catastrophic episodes.

Postoperative Headache after Undergoing Acoustic Neuroma Surgery via the Retrosigmoid Approach.

To estimate the duration of postoperative headache after surgery for acoustic neuroma and the effects of age, sex, tumor size, extent of tumor resection, type of skin incision, surgical duration, hearing preservation, and postoperative facial nerve palsy. This retrospective review analyzed clinical data from 97 patients who had undergone surgery for unilateral acoustic neuroma via the retrosigmoid approach >1 year previously. Reliability of smartphone-based gait measurements for quantification of physical activity/inactivity levels.

Objectives: Objective measurements using built-in smartphone sensors that can measure physical activity/inactivity in daily working life have the potential to provide a new approach to assessing workers' health effects. The aim of this study was to elucidate the characteristics and reliability of built-in step counting sensors on smartphones for development of an easy-to-use objective measurement tool that can be applied in ergonomics or epidemiological research.

Methods: To evaluate the reliability of step counting sensors embedded in seven major smartphone models, the 6-minute walk test was conducted and the following analyses of sensor precision and accuracy were performed: 1) relationship between actual step count and step count detected by sensors, 2) reliability between smartphones of the same model, and 3) false detection rates when sitting during office work, while riding the subway, and driving.

Background: Recent studies have indicated that bone marrow-derived stromal cells (BMSCs) have immunomodulatory properties that suppress the T cell responses that cause graft rejection. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effect of recipient BMSCs intravenous infusion for immunomodulation in a rat vascularized composite allotransplantation model.

In our previous report, we suggested that two-pore domain acid-sensing K(+) channels (TASK-2) might be one of the candidates for the regulation of uterine circular smooth muscles in mice. In this study, we tried to show the mechanisms of relaxation via TASK-2 channels in marine myometrium.

Importance of inhibiting sodium-glucose cotransporter and its compelling indication in type 2 diabetes: pathophysiological hypothesis.

Primarily the sodium-glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors suppress the cotransport of glucose and sodium from the tubular lumen of proximal tubules to the blood and enhance the glucose excretion into urine. Therefore, glucose and caloric balances become negative, making the blood glucose level as well as insulin secretion both reduced. On the other hand, the proximal tubular fluid, constituting with low chloride concentration because of SGLT2 inhibition, is transferred to the loop of Henle.

Enlargement of the Internal Auditory Canal and Hearing Preservation in the Middle Fossa Approach for Intracanalicular Vestibular Schwannomas.

Objective: The middle fossa (MF) approach is one of the treatment options for patients with intracanalicular vestibular schwannomas. This study investigated whether enlargement of the internal auditory canal (IAC) represents a risk factor for hearing loss in the MF approach.

Methods: Participants comprised 48 patients who underwent resection of intracanalicular vestibular schwannoma using the MF approach at Nagoya City University Hospital.

Salvage method for unplanned excision of soft tissue sarcoma: long-term results of second-look surgery following radio-hyperthermo-chemotherapy.

We have established a "second-look operation" protocol that consists of whole biopsy of surgical scar tissue following radio-hyperthermo-chemotherapy (RHC) after unplanned excision of soft tissue sarcoma. Out of 30 patients who underwent RHC for soft tissue sarcoma at our Institution, 6 were enrolled into this study to undergo a second-look operation for unplanned excision. Radiotherapy was given to a total dose of 32 Gy.

Characterization of slow waves generated by myenteric interstitial cells of Cajal of the rabbit small intestine.

Slow waves (slow wavesICC) were recorded from myenteric interstitial cells of Cajal (ICC-MY) in situ in the rabbit small intestine, and their properties were compared with those of mouse small intestine. Rabbit slow wavesICC consisted of an upstroke depolarization followed by a distinct plateau component. Ni(2+) and nominally Ca(2+)-free solutions reduced the rate-of-rise and amplitude of the upstroke depolarization.
