Background: Ultrasound guidance is commonly used for accessing difficult peripheral veins. For successful access, a tourniquet is required for venodilation. Tourniquets decrease the compressibility and increase the diameter of veins; they also obfuscate artery-vein differentiation on ultrasound.

Reports of hydronephrosis-induced hypertension in pediatric patients are rare. A 7-year-old girl with hypertension was referred to our hospital with left hydronephrosis caused by ureteropelvic junction obstruction of the lower moiety in a partial duplex system. Because the lower moiety was almost nonfunctional, a laparoscopic heminephrectomy was performed.

Fear extinction leads to a decrease of originally acquired fear responses after the threat is no longer present. Fear extinction is adaptive and critical for organism's survival, but deficits in extinction may lead to exaggerated fear in animals or post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in humans. Dopamine has recently emerged as essential for fear extinction and PTSD, however the neural circuits serving this dopamine function are only beginning to be investigated, and the dopamine intracellular signaling pathways are unknown.

The physiological actions of a gut hormone, glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), in Alzheimer's disease (AD) brain remain poorly understood, although GLP-1 receptor (GLP-1R) expression in this organ has been shown in several experimental studies. Therefore, we explored whether the GLP-1R signaling promotes the clearance of amyloid β (Aβ) (1-42) which is a core pathological hallmark of AD, focusing on the water channel protein aquaporin 4 (AQP4) localized to astrocyte endfeet perivascular membranes in intact brain. First, we confirmed that Glp1r mRNA is predominantly expressed at perivascular site of astrocytes in normal mouse cerebral cortex through in situ hybridization analysis.

Introducing heterozygous humanized tau to App knock-in mice results in the first mouse model of Alzheimer's disease in which age and amyloid-β pathology interact to initiate neurofibrillary tau tangle pathology, not dependent on mutations in MAPT. Gradual progression from amyloid-β to tau pathology in NLFTau mice opens possibilities for understanding processes precipitating clinical stages of Alzheimer's disease and development of translatable therapies to prevent the onset of tau pathology.

Background: A substantial portion of gastric cancer (GC) is linked to Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection. The characteristics of this viral genome, such as specific viral strains and large structural variations, influence the progression of diseases like nasopharyngeal carcinoma and hematological malignancy. However, the EBV genomes from GC have not been thoroughly characterized.

Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is a proven treatment for severe aortic stenosis (AS); however, the effects of TAVI on central blood pressure (CBP) and clinical outcomes remain unclear. We assessed CBP indices before and after TAVI and their prognostic value. Seventy-six patients with severe AS who underwent TAVI were retrospectively evaluated, and CBP was estimated noninvasively 1 day before and after TAVI.

Methods: Measurements were performed with reagents and measuring instruments for View Allergy 39 and SiLIS Allergy 45+1 using blood samples of individuals with a previous history of IgE sensitizations. We compared the results between SiLIS Allergy 45+1 with View Allergy 39.

Purpose: To establish an ultra-high dose-rate (UHDR) radiation system using a synchrotron proton beam accelerator and to compare the effects by irradiation positions on cultured cells and chick embryos.
Methods And Materials: Protons for UHDR were obtained by applying high-frequency power at much higher levels than usual to extract all protons within approximately 50 ms. Subsequently, monitoring with a Faraday cup was performed immediately after synchrotron extraction and the waveform was adjusted accordingly.

Background: Surgical resection followed by adjuvant chemotherapy is currently the first choice for the treatment of clinical N1 (cN1) non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). However, diagnosing cN1 correctly can be difficult, even with current imaging diagnostic technologies. We aimed to analyze the diagnostic accuracy of preoperative nodal status and the predictive factors for nodal upstaging of cN1-NSCLC.

Purpose: Although neuropathological comorbidities, including Alzheimer's disease neuropathological change (AD-NC) and limbic-predominant age-related TAR DNA-binding protein 43encephalopathy neuropathological change (LATE-NC), are associated with medial temporal atrophy in patients with Lewy body disease (LBD), the diagnostic performance of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)-derived indices remains unclear. This study aimed to investigate the diagnostic performance of MRI-derived indices representing medial temporal atrophy in differentiating between LBD with AD-NC and/or LATE-NC (mixed LBD [mLBD]) and without these comorbidities (pure LBD [pLBD]).
Methods: This study included 24 and 16 patients with pathologically confirmed mLBD and pLBD, respectively.

Background: Laparoscopic surgery for gastric cancer has become widely used; minimally invasive surgery has become the mainstream of treatment. This randomized controlled trial (RCT) aimed to compare long-term quality of life (QoL) and weight loss rates in patients who underwent single-port laparoscopic gastrectomy (SLG) or multi-port laparoscopic gastrectomy (MLG) for gastric cancer.
Methods: This single-center RCT compared MLG and SLG in patients with clinical stage I gastric cancer, all of which underwent distal gastrectomy between April 2016 and September 2018.

Mercury pollution, including from its use during gold mining and refining, remains an important problem worldwide. In particular, methylmercury, a microbial alteration of mercury released into the environment, is a major environmental neurotoxicant. Although there has been growing concern about the health hazards of exposure to low levels of mercury, the effects of prenatal mercury exposure on neurodevelopmental outcomes in children have remained controversial.

This study evaluated the direct and indirect thermal effects of various surgical energy devices using an ex-vivo model. Two types of three devices were evaluated: ENSEAL™ X1 Curved Jaw Tissue Sealer (X1) and ENSEAL™ G2 Curved Tissue Sealer (G2) as vessel sealing systems (VSSs), and HARMONIC HD1000i Shears (HA) as an ultrasonic activating device (USAD). Each device was activated once under DRY or WET conditions.

Objectives: To investigate the use of photon-counting detector CT (PCD-CT) to improve brachial plexus depiction.
Materials And Methods: This retrospective study included patients who underwent neck CT from March to December 2023. To assess the optimal reconstruction condition in PCD-CT, the signal-to-noise ratios (SNRs) on images using various quantitative regular (Qr) kernels and strengths of quantum iterative reconstruction (QIR) were evaluated.
