Recent progress in paraganglioma (PGL) revealed genotype-phenotype relationship, especially succinate dehydrogenase complex subunit B (SDHB) gene mutation-related to the extra-adrenal origin and metastasis. SDHB-immunohistochemistry can detect all types of SDH-subunit mutations, and is a useful tool to detect SDH-mutation tumors. PGLs usually occur along with sympathetic, and parasympathetic chains, however, colorectal paraganglioma is extremely rare.

Percutaneous and transconjunctival approaches are commonly used for fractures of the orbit and orbital rim. However, it leaves visible scarring on the face. Although previous studies reported scarring from the percutaneous approach, few reported the degree of such scarring.

[A Case of Glans Penile Necrosis Due to Hyaluronic Acid into the Penis for Male Genital Augmentation].

A 65-year-old man visited us with a painful penis after receiving an injection of hyaluronic acid into the penis for male genital augmentation. On admission, physical examination revealed black necrotic lesions and ulcerations on his glans penis. We performed partial penectomy to remove the necrotic tissues.

Intravesical mitomycin C (MMC) and MMC + cytosine arabinoside for non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer: a randomised clinical trial.

Objectives: To compare the urinary pH, recurrence-free survival (RFS), and safety of adjuvant intravesical therapy in patients with non-muscle-invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) receiving mitomycin C (MMC) therapy and MMC + cytosine arabinoside (Ara-C) therapy.

Patients And Methods: A total of 165 patients with NMIBC from six hospitals were randomly allocated to two groups: weekly instillation of MMC + Ara-C (30 mg/30 mL + 200 mg/10 mL) for 6 weeks and the same instillation schedule of MMC (30 mg/40 mL). The primary outcome was RFS, and secondary outcomes were urinary pH and toxicity in the two groups.

Real-world comparative effectiveness and safety of tofacitinib and baricitinib in patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

Objective: To compare the efficacy and safety of tofacitinib and baricitinib in patients with RA in a real-world setting.

Methods: A total of 242 patients with RA who were treated with tofacitinib (n = 161) or baricitinib (n = 81) were enrolled. We evaluated efficacy and safety between tofacitinib and baricitinib using multivariable analyses to avoid confounding.

The Real-World Data in Japanese Patients with Unresectable Hepatocellular Carcinoma Treated with Lenvatinib from a Nationwide Multicenter Study.

Background: Lenvatinib (LEN) has been approved for patients with unresectable hepatocellular carcinoma (u-HCC) since March 2018 in Japan. We performed a retrospective nationwide multicenter study to clarify the clinical characteristics of LEN in real-world practice.

Methods: A total of 343 u-HCC patients who received LEN from March 2018 to May 2020 at 23 sites in Japan were registered.

Steroid-refractory acute graft-versus-host disease (SR-aGVHD) is a serious complication that negatively affects the prognosis and quality of life of patients who receive allogeneic hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (allo-HSCT). Antithymocyte globulin (ATG) is one of the second-line treatments for SR-aGVHD. We retrospectively evaluated Karnofsky Performance Status (KPS) recovery and clinical response in 11 patients who received the response-guided low-dose ATG treatment for SR-aGVHD after allo-HSCT using alternative donors.

Histopathological changes of myocytes in restrictive cardiomyopathy.

Restrictive cardiomyopathy (RCM) is a rare primary myocardial disease, and its pathological features are yet to be determined. Restrictive cardiomyopathy with MHY7 mutation was diagnosed in a 65-year-old Japanese woman. Electron microscopy of a myocardial biopsy revealed electron-dense materials resulting from focal myocyte degeneration and necrosis as well as tubular structures and pseudo-inclusion bodies in some nuclei.

Effect of belt electrode-skeletal muscle electrical stimulation on immobilization-induced muscle fibrosis.

Purpose: Macrophage accumulation in response to decreasing myonuclei may be the major mechanism underlying immobilization-induced muscle fibrosis in muscle contracture, an intervention strategy suppressing these lesions is necessary. Therefore, this research investigated the effect of belt electrode-skeletal muscle electrical stimulation (B-SES), a new electrical stimulation device, to the macrophage accumulation via myonuclei decrease in immobilization-induced muscle fibrosis.

Materials And Methods: 18 Wistar male rats were divided into the control group, immobilization group (with plaster cast fixation to immobilize the soleus muscles in a shortened position for 2 weeks), and B-SES group (with muscle contractile exercise through B-SES during the immobilization period).

Dasatinib, a second-generation TKI, was administered as the initial treatment but achieved neither a cytogenetic nor molecular response. A mutational analysis of revealed that the patient had a T315I mutation.

Protocol for studying the efficiency of ChemoCalc software in helping patients to understand drug treatment costs for breast cancer: A multicenter, open-label, randomized phase 2 study.

Objective The standard treatment for chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) is the continuous use of tyrosine kinase inhibitors (TKIs), which results in a favorable prognosis for the majority of patients. Recent studies have identified cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) as late adverse events (AEs) related to TKIs. In this study, we evaluated the long-term efficacy and AEs of TKIs, focusing on CVDs.

Successful Treatment of a Patient with Brentuximab Vedotin-Refractory ALK-Negative Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma with Romidepsin.

We present the case of a 78-year-old male patient who was diagnosed with anaplastic lymphoma kinase (ALK)-negative, CC chemokine receptor 4 (CCR4)-negative, and CD30-positive anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL). The patient had a past medical history of adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma and colon cancers that had developed simultaneously approximately 2 years prior to the development of ALCL that were treated with immunochemotherapy and resection, respectively. Initial treatment for ALCL included brentuximab vedotin, an anti-CD30 monoclonal antibody-monomethyl auristatin E conjugate; however, we were unable to achieve a sufficient treatment effect.

This systematic review aimed to determine the effects of aerobic, resistance, and mixed exercise on multiple aspects of quality of life in patients with cancer through a meta-analysis.

Methods: Randomized controlled trials with quality of life were collected, and 20 studies were analyzed.

Effects of Cryotherapy Applied at Different Temperatures on Inflammatory Pain During the Acute Phase of Arthritis in Rats.

Objective: The biological mechanisms of cryotherapy for managing acute pain remain unclear. Additionally, it is unknown whether the effectiveness of cryotherapy depends on the applied temperature. This study aimed to clarify the biological effects of cryotherapy and to examine the therapeutic effects of cryotherapy applied at different temperatures in rats.

Short-Term Effects of Isometric Quadriceps Muscle Exercise with Auditory and Visual Feedback on Pain, Physical Function, and Performance after Total Knee Arthroplasty: A Randomized Controlled Trial.

Severe acute pain after total knee arthroplasty (TKA) may cause delay in muscle strength and functional recovery, and it is a risk factor for chronic postoperative pain. Although pharmacological approaches are the typical firstline to treat acute pain; recently, nonpharmacological approaches such as exercise have been increasingly applied. The purpose of this investigation was to evaluate the effects of a rehabilitation program involving isometric quadriceps exercise with auditory and visual feedback to improve the short-term outcome after TKA.

Effectiveness and safety of non-tumor necrosis factor inhibitor therapy for anti-human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 antibody-positive rheumatoid arthritis.

Objectives: Our previous study showed that the effectiveness of tumor necrosis factor (TNF) inhibitors was attenuated in anti-human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1) antibody-positive patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). We aimed to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of non-TNF inhibitors in anti-HTLV-1 antibody-positive patients with RA.

Methods: We reviewed patients with RA who received abatacept or tocilizumab as the first biologic agent.

Mogamulizumab for adult T-cell leukemia-lymphoma: a multicenter prospective observational study.

Monitoring of Immune Responses Following Mogamulizumab-Containing Treatment in Patients with Adult T-Cell Leukemia-Lymphoma (ATL) (MIMOGA) is a multicenter prospective observational study to establish the most effective and safe treatment strategy using mogamulizumab for ATL patients (UMIN000008696). Mogamulizumab-naive patients were enrolled (n = 102), of whom 101 received mogamulizumab-containing treatment (68 acute, 18 lymphoma, 12 chronic, and 3 smoldering subtypes). At enrollment, there was a significant inverse correlation between serum soluble interleukin-2 receptor (sIL-2R) levels and percentages of Tax-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes (Tax-CTLs) in the entire lymphocyte population or in the CD8+ T cell subset, but there was not a correlation with cytomegalovirus pp65-specific cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CMV-CTLs).

Correlation between Transient Hypotension and Exclusively Exercise-induced Symptoms of Two-to-One Atrioventricular Block.

A 62-year-old woman with activity-dependent two-to-one atrioventricular block (2:1AVB) and a normal left ventricular ejection fraction was referred to our department for the evaluation of exclusively exercise-induced marked symptoms. The treadmill test helped establish a clear correlation between 2:1AVB and symptoms. The test results demonstrated that exercise-induced marked symptoms were attributed to abrupt transient hypotension combined with relative bradycardia, probably due to increased diastolic mitral and tricuspid regurgitation because of 2:1AVB during moderate-to-heavy exercise.

[Association of rehabilitation time with activities of daily living using data from a hospital bed function report system].

Objectives　The main purpose of rehabilitation is to improve the activities of daily living (ADL). Although convalescent wards are required to provide intensive rehabilitation to patients to improve their ADL, they have not been verified sufficiently. With a focus on the rehabilitation time, this study investigated the association of the amount of rehabilitation with ADL using a complete enumeration survey of a hospital bed function report system.
