Back Ground: Krüppel-like transcription factor 5 (KLF5) is a transcription factor regulating cell proliferation, angiogenesis and differentiation. It has been recently reported that Am80, a synthetic retinoic acid receptor α-specific agonist, inhibits the expression of KLF5. In the present study, we have examined the expression of KLF5 in fibrotic peritoneum induced by chlorhexidine gluconate (CG) in mouse and evaluated that Am80, as an inhibitor of KLF5, can reduce peritoneal fibrosis.

LRFN2 encodes a synaptic adhesion-like molecule that physically interacts with N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor 1 and its scaffold proteins. Previous studies in humans and mice have demonstrated its genetic association with neurodevelopmental disorders such as learning deficiency and autism. In this study, we showed that Lrfn2-deficient (KO) mice exhibit abnormalities of erythropoietic systems due to altered NMDA receptor function.

Heat-Not-Burn (HNB) products, generating vapor without combusting tobacco leaves, have been developed with the expectation that the number and quantity of chemicals in the vapor of these products would be reduced compared with the smoke from conventional combustible cigarettes. However, whether the lower chemical levels correlate with lower toxicity remains to be determined. Here we examined differences in the biological effects of conventional cigarette smoke (CS) and two HNB products, Ploom TECH and Ploom TECH+, using the cultured cancer cell line A549 and the normal bronchial epithelium cell line BEAS-2B.

The incidence of hip fractures is increasing in Japan and is high among women older than 70 years. While osteoporosis has been identified as one of the causative factors of fracture, atypical femoral fracture has emerged as a potential complication of bisphosphonate therapy. Atypical femoral fracture is prevalent among Asian women and has been attributed to morphological parameters.

Background: Moyamoya vessels are cerebral vasculopathies characterized by net-like collateral vessel formation at the cerebral basal area and stenosis of the terminal internal carotid artery, proximal middle cerebral artery, and anterior cerebral artery. A diagnosis of Moyamoya disease depends on the bilateral presence of Moyamoya vessels. Moyamoya disease associated with Graves' disease has rarely been reported to be a cause of ischemic events due to hyperthyroidism.

Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) is a mature T-cell neoplasm and is classified into four subtypes (acute, lymphoma, chronic, and smoldering) according to the Shimoyama classification, established in 1991 through several nationwide surveys based on the clinical diversity of patients diagnosed in 1983-1987 in Japan. Thereafter, no such studies have been conducted. Recently, we conducted a nationwide hospital survey using the method of the 1980s studies, collected baseline data on 996 ATL patients diagnosed in 2010-2011 from 126 hospitals, and reported their unique epidemiological characteristics.

Forensic diagnosis of fatal hypothermia is considered difficult because there are no specific findings. Accordingly, exploration of novel fatal hypothermia-specific findings is important. To elucidate the molecular mechanism of homeostasis in hypothermia and identify novel molecular markers to inform the diagnosis of fatal hypothermia, we focused on microRNA expression in skeletal muscle, which plays a role in cold-induced thermogenesis in mammals.

Significant advancements have been achieved with regard to the outcomes of acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) patients through the introduction of all-trans retinoic acid; however, early hemorrhagic death and differentiation syndrome remain the major causes of remission induction failure in patients with APL. To investigate early death, serious hemorrhage, and differentiation syndrome during remission induction therapy in terms of incidence, risk factors, influence on outcomes, and prophylactic effects of several new anticoagulants, the results of 344 patients enrolled in the Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia 204 study conducted by the Japan Adult Leukemia Study Group were analyzed. Early death was observed in 16 patients (4.

The ophthalmic artery usually arises from the supraclinoid portion of the internal carotid artery. Here, we present an extremely rare case of abnormal origin of the ophthalmic artery from the anterior cerebral artery associated with the paraclinoid internal carotid artery aneurysm. As the embryology of the ophthalmic artery is complex, this case provides additional insight into the variation of the ophthalmic artery.

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is an enveloped virus that enters host cells and transits within the endosomes before starting its replication cycle, the precise mechanism of which is yet to be elucidated. Endocytosis and endosome acidification inhibitors inhibit infection by CHIKV, murine leukemia virus (MLV), or SARS-coronavirus, indicating that these viral entries into host cells occur through endosomes and require endosome acidification. Although endosomal cathepsin B protease is necessary for MLV, Ebola virus, and SARS-CoV infections, its role in CHIKV infection is unknown.

Bartter syndrome and Gitelman syndrome (GS) are autosomal recessive disorders usually caused by homozygous or compound heterozygous mutations in causative genes. In some patients, these two syndromes cannot be discriminated based on clinical features or mutation type; thus, a single disease concept, salt-losing tubulopathies (SLTs), has been used instead. Despite the existence of several SLT causative genes, cases of digenic heterozygous mutations in two different genes are extremely rare.

Dichorionic diamniotic (DCDA) twin pregnancies after single blastocyst embryo transfer have been reported recently, although a blastocyst ovum is generally believed to divide into monochorionic twin pregnancy. We investigated the incidence of DCDA twin pregnancy after single blastocyst embryo transfer and their zygosity. This prospective cohort study included 655 consecutive twin pregnancies that were managed from 2006 to 2014 at our institution.
