Obesity is associated with an increased risk of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), which is initiated by adipocyte-macrophage crosstalk. Among the possible molecules regulating this crosstalk, we focused on neuropeptide Y (NPY), which is known to be involved in hypothalamic appetite and adipose tissue inflammation and metabolism. In this study, the NPY mice showed a marked decrease in body weight and adiposity, and lower free fatty acid and adipose inflammation without food intake alteration during a high fat diet (HFD).

We have previously reported that gamma-interferon inducible lysosomal thiolreductase (GILT) functions as a host defense factor against retroviruses by digesting disulfide bonds on viral envelope proteins. GILT is widely conserved even in plants and fungi as well as animals. The thiolreductase active site of mammalian GILT is composed of a CXXC amino acid motif, whereas the C-terminal cysteine residue is changed to serine in arthropods including shrimps, crabs, and flies.

Background: The main mechanism of body temperature decrease during cesarean delivery under spinal anesthesia is core-to-peripheral redistribution of body heat, attributable to vasodilation. Perfusion index (PI) obtained with a pulse oximeter helps to assess peripheral perfusion dynamics by detecting the change in peripheral vascular tone. This study aimed to examine whether preoperative toe PI could predict the decrease in core temperature induced by spinal anesthesia during cesarean delivery.

Purpose: Structured training using cadaveric simulation is useful for trans-anal surgery; however, no studies have examined the effectiveness of cadaveric training for advanced trans-anal surgery including pelvic exenteration (PE).
Methods: Twelve colorectal surgeons attended a total of 10 cadaveric simulation training courses between 2016 and 2021 and completed a questionnaire at the end of the program. We divided 14 consecutive patients who underwent trans-anal PE between 2015 and 2021 into two groups: pre-training group and post-training group, and compared the clinico-pathological features between the groups.

Objective The quality of life and activities of daily living (ADL) are generally poor among dialysis patients after intracerebral hemorrhaging, and their precise clinical course remains unclear. In addition, the association between the severity of cerebral hemorrhaging and the long-term prognosis in these patients has not been fully elucidated. This study aimed to evaluate the subsequent prognosis of hemodialysis patients who survived the acute phase of intracerebral hemorrhaging.

With the emergence of coronavirus disease-2019, researchers have gained interest in the therapeutic efficacy of mesenchymal stem/stromal cells (MSCs) in acute respiratory distress syndrome; however, the mechanisms of the therapeutic effects of MSCs are unclear. We have previously reported that adipose-derived MSCs (AD-MSCs) strengthen the barrier function of the pulmonary vessels in scaffold-based bioengineered rat lungs. In this study, we evaluated whether AD-MSCs could enhance the intercellular barrier function of lung epithelial cells in vitro using a transwell coculture system.

The nucleolus is a membrane-less organelle sequestered from the nucleus by liquid droplet formation through a liquid-liquid phase separation (LLPS). It plays important roles in cell homoeostasis through its internal thermodynamic changes. Reversible nucleolar transitions between coalescence and dispersion are dependent on the concentrations, conformations and interactions of its molecular liquid droplet-forming components, including DNA, RNA and protein.

Background: Cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) cytology and spinal MR imaging are routinely performed for staging before treatment of intracranial germinoma. However, the interpretation of the results of CSF cytology poses 2 unresolved clinical questions: (1) Does positive CSF cytology correlate with the presence of spinal lesion before treatment? and (2) Is craniospinal irradiation (CSI) necessary for patients with positive CSF cytology in the absence of spinal lesion?
Methods: Multicenter retrospective analyses were performed based on a questionnaire on clinical features, spinal MR imaging finding, results of CSF cytology, treatments, and outcomes which was sent to 86 neurosurgical and 35 pediatrics departments in Japan. Pretreatment frequencies of spinal lesion on MR imaging were compared between the patients with positive and negative cytology.

Wiskott-Aldrich syndrome (WAS) is an X-chromosome recessive immunodeficiency disease characterized by the triad of thrombocytopenia, eczema, and susceptibility to infection owing to WAS protein gene abnormalities. Kidney transplantation is rarely offered to WAS patients with end-stage renal disease because of concerns that thrombocytopenia and immune disorders may affect the clinical outcome. Here, we report the case of a 20-year-old kidney transplant patient who developed end-stage renal disease owing to immunoglobulin (Ig)A nephropathy caused by WAS.

We recently identified a CD63-interacting protein to understand the role of CD63 in virion production of the human immunodeficiency virus type 1, and we have found that Rab3a forms a complex with CD63. In this study, we analysed the effect of Rab3a on virion production of the murine leukaemia virus (MLV), which is another member of the retrovirus family. We found that Rab3a silencing induced lysosomal degradation of the MLV Gag protein, and recovery of the Rab3a expression restored the level of the Gag protein through a complex formation of MLV Gag and Rab3a, indicating that Rab3a is required for MLV Gag protein expression.

Although the association between radiation exposure and thyroid carcinogenesis is epidemiologically evident, 'true' radiation-induced cancers cannot be identified from biological evidence of radiation-associated cases. To assess the individual risk for thyroid cancer due to radiation exposure, we aimed to identify biomarkers that are specifically altered during thyroid carcinogenesis after irradiation in a time-dependent manner in an animal model. Thyroid glands were obtained from rats (n = 175) at 6-16 months after local X-ray (0.

Study Question: Is there any change in the distribution of microvilli and microtubules in the apical endometria of women with adenomyosis?
Summary Answer: We observed microvilli damage in the apical endometria and an axonemal alteration characterized by abnormal distribution of longitudinal bundles of microtubules within microvilli in women with adenomyosis.
What Is Known Already: Human adenomyosis has a negative impact on female fertility. Abnormal utero-tubal sperm transport, tissue inflammation and toxic effect of chemical mediators have been proposed as contributing factors.

The diaphysis of the human femoral bone has a physiological anterior curvature; additionally, there is a curvature to the medial side or lateral side. In addition to compression stress from gravity during standing, walking, and running, these bones are continuously exposed to complex stresses from the traction forces of the various strong muscles attached to them. The femoral diaphysis is subjected to these mechanical stresses, and the direction and size of its curvature are defined according to Wolff's law and the mechanostat theory of Frost.
