The coexistence of v-Raf murine sarcoma viral oncogene homolog B1 () and telomere reverse transcriptase promoter (-p) mutations is considerably associated with aggressiveness and poor prognosis in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). However, the association between gross findings and genetic alterations in PTC remains unknown. We aimed to investigate the association between clinicopathologic features, including macroscopic features, and the coexistent and -p mutations in patients with PTC.

Survivin is highly expressed in most human cancers, making it a promising target for cancer diagnosis and treatment. In this study, we developed peptide probes consisting of Bor, a high-affinity survivin-binding peptide, and a survivin protein segment using peptide linkers as survivin-sensitive fluorescent probes (SSFPs). All conjugates were attached to 5(6)-carboxyfluorescein (FAM) at the -terminal as a fluorophore and to 4((4(dimethylamino)phenyl)azo)benzoic acid (DABCYL) at the -terminal as a quencher.

Purpose: No study has compared cancer regression (d) and growth (g) rates in patients with advanced castration-sensitive prostate cancer (CSPC) treated with androgen deprivation therapy. The comparison of d and g rates provides insight into the differential impact of ADT regimens on tumor dynamics, potentially guiding more personalized treatment strategies. Therefore, we aimed to estimate these rates and evaluate their impact on survival outcomes.

Aim: The incidence of and factors involved in gastroesophageal varix-related events in hepatitis C virus-related cirrhosis patients, including decompensated cirrhosis, after direct-acting antiviral therapy are unclear.
Methods: We conducted a multicenter study using prospective data from 478 hepatitis C virus-related cirrhosis patients treated with direct-acting antiviral therapy from February 2019 to December 2021 at 33 Japanese hospitals. Gastroesophageal varices were classified as F1 (small-caliber), F2 (moderately enlarged), or F3 (markedly enlarged) according to the Japanese criteria.

Bone morphogenetic protein 3b (BMP3b), also known as growth differentiation factor 10 (GDF10), is a non-osteogenic BMP highly expressed in the skeleton. Although in vitro studies have shown that BMP3b suppresses osteoblast differentiation, the physiological role of BMP3b in regulating bone mass in vivo remains unknown. Here, we show that BMP3b deletion in mice leads to a high bone mass phenotype via an unexpected novel mechanism involving de-repression of canonical BMP/Smad signaling.

Purpose: Postoperative management for colonic perforation is an important prognostic factor, but whether intensivists perform postoperative management varies between institutions.
Methods: We investigated 291 patients with colonic perforation between 2018 and 2022. Patients were divided into those managed by an intensivists (ICU group; n = 40) and those not managed by an intensivists (non-ICU group; n = 251).

Chemical modifications of cellular RNAs play key roles in gene expression and host defense. The cap-adjacent ,2'--dimethyladenosine (mAm) is a prevalent modification of vertebrate and viral mRNAs and is catalyzed by the newly discovered methyltransferase PCIF1. However, its role in gene expression remains unclear due to conflicting reports on its effects on mRNA stability and translation.

We hypothesized that an estimation formula for the preparation time for anesthesia induction and surgery could be developed by incorporating anesthesia and surgical factors, as well as the 'clinical department,' into the formula. This retrospective observational study analyzed 12,528 scheduled surgical cases.

We measured intestinal fatty acid-binding protein (I-FABP) levels, a useful marker of small intestinal mucosal injury, in patients with cirrhosis to determine their relationship with liver function and complications. This cross-sectional study included 71 patients with cirrhosis admitted for treatment of cirrhotic complications or hepatocellular carcinoma (cohort A) and 104 patients with cirrhosis who received direct-acting antiviral therapy for HCV (cohort B). I-FABP levels, measured by ELISA, were evaluated relative to hepatic reserve and compared with non-invasive scoring systems for diagnostic performance in cirrhotic complications.

Purpose: SN-38, the active metabolite of irinotecan, may cause adverse events necessitating treatment discontinuation and management. Diarrhea, which is treated with loperamide, is one such event. However, loperamide may delay SN-38 elimination, causing more adverse events.

Objectives: For the diagnosis of IgG4-related dacryoadenitis and sialadenitis, either revised comprehensive diagnostic criteria or organ-specific diagnostic criteria for IgG4-related dacryoadenitis and sialadenitis in 2008 were applied; however, the collected knowledge for IgG4-related dacryoadenitis and sialadenitis required us to revise the criteria for IgG4-related dacryoadenitis and sialadenitis.
Methods: The board member of Japanese Study Group for IgG4-related Dacryoadenitis and Sialadenitis revised the diagnostic criteria for IgG4-related dacryoadenitis and sialadenitis. We collected the clinical questions to be revised and performed a review of the literature.

Familial Mediterranean Fever (FMF) is the most common hereditary autoinflammatory disease, characterized by recurrent fever, arthritis, rash, and serositis, and is caused by mutations in the MEFV gene coding for the pyrin protein. The primary treatment goal is to prevent acute attacks and minimize subclinical inflammation to avoid secondary amyloidosis with colchicine as the first-line treatment. However, 10-20% of patients are colchicine-resistant or intolerant.

Exophiala dermatitidis is an emerging black fungus that causes pulmonary infections that may be underestimated by conventional culture methods. We encountered one case that initially appeared to be yeast and was misidentified as Rhodotorula spp. using a commercial identification kit.
