Rufy4, a protein belonging to the RUN and FYVE domain-containing protein family, participates in various cellular processes such as autophagy and intracellular trafficking. However, its role in osteoclast-mediated bone resorption remains uncertain. In this study, we investigated the expression and role of the gene in osteoclasts using small interfering RNA (siRNA) transfection and gene overexpression systems.

Introduction: Aromatase inhibitors (AIs) are the standard treatment for early breast cancer (EBC) and are typical causative agents of cancer treatment-induced bone loss. However, the effects of long-term treatment with these drugs on bone microstructure remain unclear.
Materials And Methods: This prospective, single-arm observational study included postmenopausal, non-osteoporotic women with hormone receptor-positive EBC.

Background: The prognosis of patients with lung cancer and malignant pleural effusion (MPE) caused by carcinomatous pleurisy is poor. Chemical pleurodesis is commonly performed clinically, however, often has a high failure rate. Furthermore, prolonged sustained drainage and delayed introduction of systemic chemotherapy could increase the risk of worsening the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group Performance Status (ECOG PS) in the treatment of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Objectives: Bone graft materials commonly used for maxillary sinus floor augmentation (MSFA), including hydroxyapatite (HAp) and β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP), are mostly granular and have poor handleability. HAp/collagen composite material (HAp/Col) and β-tricalcium phosphate (β-TCP)/poly(L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) have shown promise but their application in MSFA as bone graft materials remains unclear. Here, we investigated the bone-forming behavior of HAp/Col and β-TCP/PLGA in an MSFA rabbit model.

Phyllodes tumors (PT) are fibroepithelial neoplasms that are treated by complete surgical excision. The effectiveness of adjuvant therapies, including radiotherapy and chemotherapy, for PT remains unclear, and the use of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (NAC) is yet to be established. We report a case of a 15-year-old girl with acute lymphatic leukemia (ALL) who was incidentally diagnosed with a 50-mm borderline PT in the left breast using computed tomography, ultrasonography, and histological examination following needle biopsy.

Background/aim: Owing to underlying diseases and decreased physiological functions, frailty in elderly patients may be associated with adverse postoperative complications and mortality. To date, there are various frailty assessment methods, with the five-item modified frailty index (mFI-5) being an objective and concise evaluation tool. This study aimed to clarify whether mFI-5 scoring, a measure of frailty, can predict postoperative outcomes in elderly patients undergoing laparoscopic colorectal surgery.

Introduction: Needle-track seeding of prostate cancer into the rectal wall following transrectal prostate biopsy is exceedingly rare. We report a case of mucinous prostate cancer recurrence in the rectal wall due to biopsy needle seeding, discovered after robot-assisted radical prostatectomy.
Case Presentation: A 67-year-old man underwent robot-assisted radical prostatectomy for mucinous prostate cancer (clinical stage T2cN0M0, Gleason score of 4 + 4, and initial prostate-specific antigen level of 8.

[Purpose] This study aimed to determine the relationship between preoperative and discharge assessments in patients undergoing around-the-knee osteotomy. [Participants and Methods] We enrolled patients admitted to our hospital who underwent around-the-knee osteotomy. We measured knee joint range of motion, pain numeric rating scale, pain catastrophizing scale, hospital anxiety and depression scale, and 10-m walk time were measured preoperatively and before discharge.

Introduction: The growing obstacles to balancing work and family caregiving responsibilities (work-family care obstacles) have led to heightened difficulties in work-life adjustment among employees, potentially resulting in decreased life satisfaction.
Objectives: The aims of this study were to investigate whether facing work-family care obstacles is associated with poor life satisfaction and whether it moderates the association between caregiver burden and life satisfaction among working family caregivers in Japan.
Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted involving 141 family caregivers, all of whom were under 65 years old and living with older long-term care recipients.

Background: Non-vaccine serotype (NVT) pneumococcal pneumonia in Japan has increased with the spread of pneumococcal vaccinations. However, there is no data regarding the clinical background and antimicrobial susceptibility of NVT isolates compared with those of vaccine serotype (VT) isolates in adult pneumococcal pneumonia.
Methods: The serotypes and antimicrobial susceptibilities of pneumococcal isolates obtained from patients with pneumonia at the University of Occupational and Environmental Health, Japan, from January 2011 to December 2020 were retrospectively evaluated along with the patients' clinical information.

Introduction: Research supporting the presence of diverse motor impairments, including impaired balance coordination, in children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is increasing. The one-legged standing test (OLST) is a popular test of balance. Since machine learning is a powerful technique for learning predictive models from movement data, it can objectively evaluate the processes involved in OLST.

Background: Trastuzumab deruxtecan (T-DXd) is an antibody-drug conjugate targeting HER2-positive gastric cancer or gastroesophageal junction cancer (GC/GEJC). Although effective, T-DXd has notable toxicities, including interstitial lung disease (ILD). This study evaluated the efficacy, safety, and prognostic factors associated with T-DXd for GC/GEJC.

The coexistence of v-Raf murine sarcoma viral oncogene homolog B1 () and telomere reverse transcriptase promoter (-p) mutations is considerably associated with aggressiveness and poor prognosis in papillary thyroid carcinoma (PTC). However, the association between gross findings and genetic alterations in PTC remains unknown. We aimed to investigate the association between clinicopathologic features, including macroscopic features, and the coexistent and -p mutations in patients with PTC.

Survivin is highly expressed in most human cancers, making it a promising target for cancer diagnosis and treatment. In this study, we developed peptide probes consisting of Bor, a high-affinity survivin-binding peptide, and a survivin protein segment using peptide linkers as survivin-sensitive fluorescent probes (SSFPs). All conjugates were attached to 5(6)-carboxyfluorescein (FAM) at the -terminal as a fluorophore and to 4((4(dimethylamino)phenyl)azo)benzoic acid (DABCYL) at the -terminal as a quencher.

Purpose: No study has compared cancer regression (d) and growth (g) rates in patients with advanced castration-sensitive prostate cancer (CSPC) treated with androgen deprivation therapy. The comparison of d and g rates provides insight into the differential impact of ADT regimens on tumor dynamics, potentially guiding more personalized treatment strategies. Therefore, we aimed to estimate these rates and evaluate their impact on survival outcomes.
