Background: Diffusion-weighted magnetic resonance imaging (DWI) is essential for diagnosing Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD). Thalamic lesions are rarely detected by DWI in sporadic CJD (sCJD) cases with methionine homozygosity at polymorphic codon 129 (129MM) of the prion protein (PrP) gene. Here, we describe an unusual sCJD case, characterized by prolonged isolated thalamic diffusion hyperintensities and atypical brain pathology, in combination with the 129MM genotype.

J Virol Methods

February 2025

Research Center for Biological Products in the Next Generation, National Institute of Infectious Diseases, Tokyo, Japan. Electronic address:

The human T-cell leukemia virus type 1 (HTLV-1), a retrovirus, integrates into host DNA and causes adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL) in some individuals. Two types of defective proviruses, Type 1 and Type 2, are often observed in ATL cells. Here, we developed a 3-plex digital PCR (dPCR) method to detect HTLV-1 proviral deletions by comparing the ratios of copy numbers quantified using specific primer-probes for the LTR, pol, and pX regions.

Article Synopsis
  • Lipomatous tumors are the most common soft tissue neoplasms, and distinguishing between benign lipomas and more serious atypical lipomatous tumors requires accurate diagnostic methods, including MDM2/CDK4 immunostaining.
  • In a study involving 109 patients, only a small fraction of those diagnosed with atypical tumors tested positive for MDM2, indicating that traditional morphological diagnoses may be unreliable.
  • The study highlighted that certain clinical features, such as older patient age and larger tumor size, could help identify potential atypical tumors, even though the overall accuracy of the diagnostic methods assessed was not very high.

Article Synopsis
  • The study explores the measurement of glomerular filtration rate (GFR), suggesting that the rare amino acids d-serine and d-asparagine can provide a more accurate assessment than traditional urine collection methods.
  • A cross-sectional analysis involving 209 kidney transplant donors and recipients utilized urine levels of these amino acids to establish an equation for estimating urine volume (eUV), which helped correct GFR measurements.
  • Results showed that d-serine and d-asparagine clearances had less bias compared to creatinine, highlighting their potential for improving GFR estimations and urine volume assessments.

We investigated the effectiveness and safety of nelarabine (NEL)-combined chemotherapy for newly diagnosed adult T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) patients. We conducted a phase II trial, T-ALL213-O, where adult T-ALL patients aged 25 to 64 were treated by a regimen based on that used in our previous study, ALL202-O. The main modifications from ALL202-O to T-ALL213-O were as follows: (1) NEL-combined chemotherapy, instead of consolidation (C)1, was used for non-complete remission (CR) patients after induction therapy (IND)1 as IND2; (2) NEL treatments were inserted into C3 and C5 on day 29.

Background & Aims: Polystyrene microplastics (PS-MPs) are pervasive in our daily life and can be ingested by the human body through bioaccumulation, causing organ damage, especially liver damage. However, the effect of PS-MPs bioaccumulation on human hepatotoxicity and their metabolism remains unclear. Recent studies have demonstrated that PS-MPs cause lipid and bile acid metabolism disorders.

Introduction: Patients undergoing cardiovascular surgery may experience hemodynamic instability during the induction of general anesthesia, and anesthetic agents with minimal hemodynamic effects should be administered. Midazolam, a classic benzodiazepine anesthetic, is known to have relatively weak circulatory depression during anesthesia induction compared to other sedatives. On the other hand, remimazolam, a newly approved short-acting benzodiazepine anesthetic, is expected to have fewer circulatory depressant effects.

Exacerbation of scarring can originate from a minority fibroblast population that has undergone inflammatory-mediated genetic changes within the wound microenvironment. The fundamental relationship between molecular and spatial organization of the repair process at the single-cell level remains unclear. We have developed a novel, high-resolution spatial multiomics method that integrates spatial transcriptomics with scRNA-Seq; we identified new characteristic features of cell-cell communication and signaling during the repair process.

Background: The optimal duration of anticoagulation therapy for patients with cancer and acute low-risk pulmonary embolism (PE) is clinically relevant, but evidence is lacking. Prolonged anticoagulation therapy could have a potential benefit for prevention of thrombotic events; however, it could also increase the risk of bleeding.

Methods: In a multicenter, open-label, adjudicator-blinded, randomized clinical trial at 32 institutions in Japan, we randomly assigned patients with cancer and acute low-risk PE of the simplified version of the Pulmonary Embolism Severity Index score of 1, in a 1:1 ratio, to receive either an 18-month or a 6-month rivaroxaban treatment.
