Background: The prognosis of patients with lung cancer and malignant pleural effusion (MPE) caused by carcinomatous pleurisy is poor. Chemical pleurodesis is commonly performed clinically, however, often has a high failure rate. Furthermore, prolonged sustained drainage and delayed introduction of systemic chemotherapy could increase the risk of worsening the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group Performance Status (ECOG PS) in the treatment of patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC).

Approximately 90% of patients with Lambert-Eaton myasthenic syndrome (LEMS) show positive P/Q-type voltage-gated calcium channels antibodies, which can be broadly classified clinically as paraneoplastic, particularly with small cell lung carcinoma and non-paraneoplastic without cancer. The first Japanese guideline for LEMS was developed in May 2022 as MG/LEMS Practice Guideline 2022. This article describes the epidemiology, symptoms, diagnosis, examination, treatment, and prognosis of this condition, based on the LEMS guidelines.

Introduction: Combined treatment using anti-programmed death-ligand 1 antibody (anti-PD-L1) and platinum-etoposide is the current standard first-line treatment for patients with extensive-stage (ES) small cell lung cancer (SCLC). However, the best treatment for relapsed ES-SCLC after the first-line treatment remains unclear. There are some approved chemotherapeutic agents that can be used against ES-SCLC, and treatment with irinotecan is well established as both a monotherapy and a combined therapy, in combination with platinum.

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on thymic epithelial tumors (TETs) in East Asian populations, specifically examining the genomic profile of surgically resected TETs in a Japanese cohort to identify genetic abnormalities and potential treatment targets.
  • Utilizing next-generation sequencing and other validation methods, the researchers analyzed specimens from 31 patients diagnosed with various types of TETs, uncovering specific mutations associated with different thymoma subtypes.
  • The findings reveal that the mutation (L424H) is prevalent in certain thymoma types, indicating its potential relevance to less aggressive forms of TETs and aligning with similar mutations found in non-Asian populations.

Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICI) are key drugs in systemic therapy for advanced non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) and have recently been incorporated into neoadjuvant and adjuvant settings for surgical resection. Currently, ICI combinations with cytotoxic agents are frequently used in clinical practice, although several ICI clinical trials have failed to produce long-term clinical benefits. Unfortunately, clinical benefit is moderate and limited considering physical and financial burden.

Hepatic sclerosing haemangiomas are rare benign tumours that are often difficult to distinguish from malignant tumours because these tumours do not show the typical imaging features of cavernous haemangiomas. We report a case of a sclerosing haemangioma that showed restricted diffusion and was difficult to differentiate from a malignancy. A 60-year-old female was referred to our hospital for evaluation of a hepatic mass that was incidentally diagnosed after a CT scan for right lower quadrant abdominal pain.

In Japan, asymptomatic metastatic breast cancer (MBC) is often detected using tumor markers or imaging tests. We aimed to investigate differences in clinicopathological features, prognosis, and treatment between asymptomatic and symptomatic MBCs. Patients with MBC were retrospectively divided into asymptomatic and symptomatic groups to compare their prognosis by breast cancer subtype: luminal, human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 positive, and triple negative.

Background: Etoposide plus cisplatin (EP) combined with concurrent accelerated hyperfractionated thoracic radiotherapy (AHTRT) is the standard treatment strategy for unresectable limited-disease (LD) small cell lung cancer (SCLC), which has remained unchanged for over two decades. Based on a previous study that confirmed the non-inferiority of amrubicin (AMR) plus cisplatin (AP) when compared with EP for extensive-disease (ED) SCLC, we have previously conducted a phase I study assessing AP with concurrent TRT (2 Gy/time, once daily, 50 Gy in total) for LD-SCLC therapy. Our findings revealed that AP with concurrent TRT could prolong overall survival to 39.
