Article Synopsis
  • - This study investigated the relationship between the severity of contrast extravasation (CE) seen on CT scans and the need for massive transfusions (MT) in children with blunt liver and/or spleen injuries, over a span from 2008 to 2019.
  • - The research included 1,407 pediatric patients, revealing that 14% required MT, and specific types of CE, particularly intraparenchymal and into the peritoneal cavity, significantly correlated with increased transfusion needs.
  • - The findings suggest that recognizing active CE during initial CT scans can guide healthcare providers in making informed decisions about transfusion strategies for young patients with these types of injuries.

CD58 plays roles in cell adhesion and co-stimulation with antigen presentation from major histocompatibility complex class II on antigen-presenting cells to T-cell antigen receptors on naïve T cells. CD58 reportedly contributes to the development of various human autoimmune diseases. Recently, genome-wide association studies (GWASs) identified CD58 as a susceptibility locus for autoimmune diseases such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), multiple sclerosis (MS), and primary biliary cholangitis (PBC).

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzed 206 patients with decompensated cirrhosis due to hepatitis C treated with direct-acting antivirals (DAA) from February 2019 to December 2021 in Japan.
  • Patients were mostly older, with 76% classified as Child-Pugh class B (CP-B), and the survival rates were promising, with high 2- and 3-year liver transplantation (LT)-free survival rates.
  • The research found that liver function, assessed at 12 weeks after DAA treatment, was a crucial predictor of prognosis, rather than the baseline liver function at the start of treatment.

  • This study evaluated a new chemiluminescent enzyme immunoassay for measuring Mac-2 binding protein glycosylation isomer (M2BPGi) levels in patients with hepatitis C virus (HCV) and healthy volunteers in Japan.
  • The new quantitative measurement system demonstrated strong reproducibility and correlation with traditional semi-quantitative methods, showing reliable results across a range of M2BPGi levels.
  • The conclusion indicates that the quantitative method reduces interpretation bias and provides more precise measurements, especially at higher M2BPGi levels compared to qualitative methods.

We report a case where tranexamic acid, which is an antifibrinolytic agent, was used to effectively treat bleeding tendency in a patient with immunoglobulin light chain (AL) amyloidosis. A male patient in his 80s without a history of bleeding disorders was admitted to our hospital for the examination of bleeding tendency and was diagnosed with a bleeding disorder due to AL amyloidosis. Blood tests revealed elevated plasmin-α2-plasmin inhibitor complex levels, suggesting fibrinolytic activation.

Introduction: Combined treatment using anti-programmed death-ligand 1 antibody (anti-PD-L1) and platinum-etoposide is the current standard first-line treatment for patients with extensive-stage (ES) small cell lung cancer (SCLC). However, the best treatment for relapsed ES-SCLC after the first-line treatment remains unclear. There are some approved chemotherapeutic agents that can be used against ES-SCLC, and treatment with irinotecan is well established as both a monotherapy and a combined therapy, in combination with platinum.
