Objective: High-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) is generally considered to have fewer enteral feeding problems than nasal continuous positive airway pressure (NCPAP) or nasal intermittent positive-pressure ventilation (NIPPV). However, the effects of HFNC on the feeding outcomes in preterm infants are still controversial. The aim of this study was to assess the effect of HFNC on postnatal growth and feeding.

Sinusoidal obstruction syndrome (SOS), also known as hepatic veno-occlusive disease (VOD), is a life-threatening complication of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation. In severe cases, SOS/VOD progresses to multiple organ failure with a mortality rate higher than 80%. Early diagnosis and treatment based on severity assessment improve the prognosis of severe SOS/VOD, but conventional diagnostic criteria may be insufficient for an early diagnosis.

We started a registry for cases of immunoglobulin (Ig)G4-related disease (IgG4-RD) in December 2019 to clarify the clinical profile of IgG4-RD. In this study, clinical information from 854 cases registered by February 16, 2024 was analyzed from multiple perspectives. Diagnosis of IgG4-RD was made in 808 cases, comprising 638 definite, 38 probable, and 132 possible.

A 69-year-old man was diagnosed with an abnormal shadow on a chest X-ray during a routine check-up. Computed tomography (CT) showed a 36 mm solid nodule at left S1+2, and 3 dimentional (3D)-CT showed the left B1+2 branching from the left main bronchus. Bronchoscopy showed branching of B1+2, B3~5, and inferior lobar bronchus from the left main bronchus, and a biopsy from the peripheral area of B1+2 confirmed the diagnosis of lung adenocarcinoma.

A 76-year-old woman with a 2-year history of Parkinson's disease presented with dropped head, which had developed rapidly after she had been prescribed donepezil hydrochloride (DNP) at 3 mg/day. After one month of medication, the extent of the head drop reached 90°. Examination revealed hypertrophy of the left sternocleidomastoid muscle, but no weakness of the extensor muscles in the cervical region.

Background: Endoscopic resection (ER) is a minimally invasive treatment for esophageal cancer that sometimes causes complications. To understand the real-world incidence and risk factors for these complications, a nationwide survey was conducted across Japan.
Methods: This retrospective multicenter study included patients who underwent ER for esophageal cancer from April 2017 to March 2018 (2017 complication analysis) and April 2021 to March 2022 (2021 complication analysis).

A 54-year-old man with a university degree was admitted to our hospital because of a two-year history of progressive dementia. He had familial sensorineural hearing loss and had been treated for epilepsy since his 30s. On admission, he showed severe dementia and parkinsonism without fever or skin rash.

A 23-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with a one-year history of muscle weakness and atrophy. He had noticed contractures of the fingers of both hands from the age of 18. Examination revealed a skin rash including heliotrope rash and Gottron's sign, joint contractures in the extremities, dysphagia, extensive muscle weakness and marked muscle atrophy.

Background: In 2018, diagnostic criteria were introduced for IgG4-related periaortitis/periarteritis and retroperitoneal fibrosis (PA/RPF). This study assessed the existing criteria and formulated an improved version.
Methods And Results: Between August 2022 and January 2023, we retrospectively analyzed 110 Japanese patients diagnosed with IgG4-related disease (IgG4-RD) involving cardiovascular and/or retroperitoneal manifestations, along with 73 non-IgG4-RD patients ("mimickers") identified by experts.

Background: Accurate evaluation of tumor invasion depth is essential to determine the appropriate treatment strategy for patients with superficial esophageal cancer. The pretreatment tumor depth diagnosis currently relies on the magnifying endoscopic classification established by the Japan Esophageal Society (JES). However, the diagnostic accuracy of tumors involving the muscularis mucosa (MM) or those invading the upper third of the submucosal layer (SM1), which correspond to Type B2 vessels in the JES classification, remains insufficient.

Objectives: Body composition and systemic inflammation/nutrition have been identified as important clinical factors in cancer patients. The modified advanced lung cancer inflammation index (mALI), which combines body composition and systemic inflammation/nutrition, is defined as appendicular skeletal muscle index × serum albumin/neutrophil-lymphocyte ratio. This retrospective study aimed to investigate associations between preoperative mALI and surgical outcomes in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) patients.

Purpose: We investigated whether twice-daily administration of a bilayer tablet formulation of tramadol (35% immediate-release [IR] and 65% sustained-release) is as effective as four-times-daily IR tramadol capsules for managing cancer pain.
Methods: This randomized, double-blind, double-dummy, active-comparator, non-inferiority study enrolled opioid-naïve patients using non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or acetaminophen (paracetamol) to manage cancer pain and self-reported pain (mean value over 3 days ≥ 25 mm on a 100-mm visual analog scale [VAS]). Patients were randomized to either bilayer tablets or IR capsules for 14 days.

Posttransplant cyclophosphamide (PTCy)-based graft-versus-host disease (GVHD) prophylaxis has been increasingly used in HLA-haploidentical transplantation and recent studies also demonstrated the efficacy of PTCy in HLA-matched transplantation. We conducted a prospective multicenter phase II study to evaluate the safety and efficacy of PTCy with tacrolimus and mycophenolate mofetil in 43 patients who underwent HLA-matched (n = 21), 1 allele mismatched (n = 20), or 2 allele mismatched (n = 2) peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (PBSCT) following myeloablative (n = 28) or reduced-intensity (n = 15) conditioning. The incidence of grade III-IV acute GVHD at 100 days was 2.

Background: We previously developed a Japan Esophageal Society Barrett's Esophagus (JES-BE) magnifying endoscopic classification for superficial BE-related neoplasms (BERN) and validated it in a nationwide multicenter study that followed a diagnostic flow chart based on mucosal and vascular patterns (MP, VP) with nine diagnostic criteria. Our present post hoc analysis aims to further simplify the diagnostic criteria for superficial BERN.
Methods: We used data from our previous study, including 10 reviewers' assessments for 156 images of high-magnifying narrow-band imaging (HM-NBI) (67 dysplastic and 89 non-dysplastic histology).

Purpose: We sought to develop machine learning models to predict the results of patient-specific quality assurance (QA) for volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT), which were represented by several dose-evaluation metrics-including the gamma passing rates (GPRs)-and criteria based on the radiomic features of 3D dose distribution in a phantom.
Methods: A total of 4,250 radiomic features of 3D dose distribution in a cylindrical dummy phantom for 140 arcs from 106 clinical VMAT plans were extracted. We obtained the following dose-evaluation metrics: GPRs with global and local normalization, the dose difference (DD) in 1% and 2% passing rates (DD1% and DD2%) for 10% and 50% dose threshold, and the distance-to-agreement in 1-mm and 2-mm passing rates (DTA1 mm and DTA2 mm) for 0.

Background: This study aimed to evaluate the adequate extent of regional lymphadenectomy according to tumor location and the impact of number-based nodal classification on survival in patients with non-ampullary duodenal adenocarcinoma (NADAC).
Methods: A total of 85 patients with NADAC who underwent surgery were enrolled. The frequency of metastasis was calculated for each node group in the respective tumor locations for 63 patients who underwent lymphadenectomy for pT2-pT4 tumor.
