The physical and mechanical properties of waste ground were examined at 14 locations across 4 inert waste landfills in Japan with the goal of establishing a safe and cost-effective design methodology specific to inert waste landfills. Composition analysis, basic physical properties, angle of repose, CASPOL impact value tests, and in situ direct shear tests were conducted. Inert wastes were comprised of three main components: fibrous, granular, and soil-like content, and their compositions varied between 3.

The annual yield of matsutake mushrooms () has consistently decreased in Japan over the past few decades. We used 15 polymorphic and codominant simple sequence repeat (SSR) markers, developed using next-generation sequencing, to carry out genetic analyses of 10 populations in Nagano, Japan. Using the SSRs, we identified 223 genotypes, none of which was observed in more than one population.

Insufficient intake of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) causes fatty liver. The mechanism responsible is primarily related to increased lipogenesis and decreased FA degradation based on rodent studies. However, these studies were limited by the fact that the typical PUFA-deficient diets contained insufficient amounts of long-chain FA, the PUFA-containing diets were primarily composed of n-3 PUFA-enriched oil, and the intake of PUFA was excessive compared with the physiological requirement.

This study discusses strength characteristics (slope stability, bearing capacity, etc.) of waste landfills through on-site tests that were carried out at 29 locations in 19 sites in Japan and three other countries, and proposes simple methods to test and assess the mechanical strength of landfills on site. Also, the possibility of using a landfill site was investigated by a full-scale eccentric loading test.

It was reported that 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D), a commonly used herbicide and a possible endocrine disruptor, can disturb spermatogenesis, but the precise mechanism is not understood. Since 2,4-D is a weak peroxisome proliferator in hepatocytes and peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα) is also expressed in Leydig cells, this study aimed to investigate the link between PPARα and 2,4-D-mediated testicular dysfunction. 2,4-D (130 mg/kg/day) was administered to wild-type and Ppara-null mice for 2 weeks, and the alterations in testis and testosterone/cholesterol metabolism in Leydig cells were examined.

Background: No epidemiologic survey examining eating disorders in Japan has been done at a national level since 1992. The prevalence of anorexia nervosa, as assessed by questionnaires to hospitals, is thought to be underestimated because patients with anorexia nervosa tend to avoid consultations. In conformity with the School Health and Safety Act of Japan, schools are required to have physicians perform a medical examination of students every year.

Sulfatides are major glycosphingolipids of lipoproteins that influence atherosclerosis and blood coagulation. Our previous cross-sectional study of hemodialysis patients showed that serum sulfatide levels decreased markedly with increasing duration of hemodialysis treatment, which may contribute to the development of cardiovascular disease. However, this past study could not demonstrate the time-dependent change in serum sulfatide levels in each patient, and the underlying mechanism is unknown.

The purpose of this study is to suggest a numerical model for postural control ability variations in children, young adults and the elderlies. Three sensors were attached to the subjects' bodies at the vertex, the iliospinale and the mid-patellar to measure three-dimensional acceleration at each point while subjects maintained a standing posture for two minutes. Variations in acceleration at the vertex differed among the three age groups.

3-Allyl-5-substituted 2-thiohydantoins (ATH-amino acids) derived from allyl isothiocyanate and amino acids can inhibit the mutagenicity of 2-amino-3-methylimidazo[4,5-f]quinoline (IQ) in the Salmonella assay. In this report, we studied possible mechanisms for the inhibition using rat liver S9 in assays for ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD), a marker activity for cytochrome P450 1A (CYP1A), which activates heterocyclic amines, and the Salmonella assays with the direct-acting mutagen 2-hydroxyamino-3-methylimidazo[4,5-f]quinoline (N-hydroxy-IQ). Quantitative analysis of ATH-amino acids and IQ during incubation with rat liver S9 fraction by HPLC showed that ATH-amino acids could act as S9-inhibitors, thereby inhibiting metabolic activation of IQ.

In a previous study we found that daytime exposure to bright as compared to dim light exerted a beneficial effect on the digestion of the evening meal. This finding prompted us to examine whether the digestion of the evening meal is also affected by evening light intensity. Subjects lived in light of 200 lux during the daytime (08:00-17:00 h) and took their evening meal at 17:00 h under 20 lux (evening dim-light condition: 17:00-02:00 h) or 2000 lux (evening bright-light condition: 17:00-02:00 h) until retiring at 02:00 h.

Aim: The study aimed at discovering the effects of wearing two types of protective mask on the clothing microclimate (temperature, humidity) inside the mask, physiological parameters and subjective sensations.
Method: Five healthy female students performed intermittent step exercise while wearing the protective clothing in a climate chamber at 28 degrees C and 60% relative humidity (RH). One mask was made of non-woven fabric and had no exhaust valve (mask A), and the other had an exhaust valve (mask B).

The effect of postprandial body posture on digestion and absorption of dietary carbohydrate were examined through breath hydrogen test on 6 female subjects. During the experiment, the participants either sat on a chair or lay on their backs for the first 4 hr (from 08:00 to 12:00) after eating the test breakfast meal. They then remained sedentary on a sofa for 6 hr (12:00 to 18:00).

Thermoregulatory responses were compared under two experimental conditions, in the laboratory (Experiment I), and in the field (Experiment II), between two kinds of protective clothing for spraying pesticides. One was currently being used (Type A), and was composed of ready made Gore-Tex clothing, mask, polyurethane gloves and rubber boots. The other one was newly designed (Type B), and was composed of pesticide-proof clothing (100% cotton with water repellent finish), mask, Gore-Tex gloves, and special boots consisting of rubber for the feet and ankle and Gore-Tex around the legs.

The effects of two kinds of protecting gloves for pesticide spraying made of different materials on thermoregulatory responses during exercise were studied at ambient temperature of 28 degrees C and relative humidity of 60% in six healthy females, aged 19. One kind of gloves was made of polyurethane (A) and the other of Goretex (B) with cotton lining in each glove. Both kinds of gloves had almost the same volume.

Japan adopted a high economic growth policy and developed rapid industrialization since the 1960s. Consequently, Japanese have gotten various positive influences and negative influences. In this paper, we describe various positive influences and also we describe the "real life" of aged persons living alone in depopulated areas as one of the typical negative influences.
