Unlabelled: There are four genogroups and 18 genotypes of human sapoviruses (HuSaVs) responsible for acute gastroenteritis. To comprehend their antigenic and virological differences, it is crucial to obtain viral stocks of the different strains. Previously, we utilized the human duodenum-derived cell line HuTu80, and glycocholate, a conjugated bile acid, to replicate and propagate GI.

In this study, two concentrations of samples were blindly coded. Each laboratory determined the analyte (bisphenol A, phenol and p-tert-butylphenol) concentration in each sample according to the established protocol.

In addition to two known species, five morphospecies have been recognized as members of this species group but left undescribed formally. In this study, species delimitation of these putatively new species was determined by barcoding of the mitochondrial COI (cytochrome c oxydase subunit I) gene and morphological comparison.

If floral thermogenesis of contributes to cold adaptation, it would be expected that thermogenic species have a larger habitat than non/slightly thermogenic species during an ice age, leading to increased genetic diversity in the current population. To address this question, potential distribution in past environment predicted by ecological niche modeling (ENM), genetic diversity, and population structure of chloroplast and genome-wide single nucleotide polymorphisms were compared between thermogenic and non/slightly thermogenic .

In floral thermogenesis, sugars play an important role not only as energy providers but also as growth and development facilitators. Yet, the mechanisms underlying sugar translocation and transport in thermogenic plants remain to be studied. Asian skunk cabbage (Symplocarpus renifolius) is a species that can produce durable and intense heat in its reproductive organ, the spadix.

The winter diets of northern ungulates are sensitive to changes in environmental conditions and ungulate population densities. We hypothesized that the winter diets of smaller browser ungulates might not readily change in response to fluctuating environmental conditions. We analyzed long-term trends in the winter diet of the Japanese serow () by analyzing rumen contents of 532 individuals over a span of 16 years among five populations along with changes in the population densities of sika deer () in Nagano Prefecture, central Japan.

Background: Encephalitis due to vaccination for mumps is a rare complication that occurs in 0.00004% of recipients, and there has been no report of serious neurological sequelae. Acute encephalopathy with biphasic seizures and late reduced diffusion (AESD) has been reported as the most frequent type among acute encephalopathy syndromes in the pediatric population in Japan.

However, there is little report on inter-laboratory study which was performed to evaluate the entire migration test, including migration operations and quantification. An interlaboratory study was performed participating 22 laboratories using 8 types of model synthetic resin samples containing 10 substances with a wide range of Log P values to evaluate the accuracy of the entire migration test.

The phylogeny of the Colocasiomyia cristata species group is reconstructed as a hypothesis, based on DNA sequences of two mitochondrial and six nuclear genes and 51 morphological characters. The resulting tree splits this species group into two clades, one of which corresponds to the colocasiae subgroup. Therefore, a new species subgroup named as the cristata subgroup is established for the other clade.

In several primates and carnivores, pronation/supination angles of the forearm skeleton were examined, and it is thought that a larger angle is useful to acquire dexterous behaviors in feeding and/or life style, including climbing. In this study, the pronation/supination angles in Asiatic black, brown and polar bears were nondestructively examined. These specimens were classified as adult or non-adult.

Coexistence of species requires equalizing mechanisms that minimize fitness differences, which are balanced by stabilizing mechanisms that enhance negative intraspecific interactions versus interspecific ones. Here, we develop a simple theoretical framework that allows measuring the relative strength of intraspecific versus interspecific competition in dominance hierarchies. We use it to evaluate mechanisms promoting coexistence between two congeneric charr that compete for foraging positions, which strongly influence density-dependent growth and survival.

Human-to-human transmission of PA I38 mutant influenza A(H3N2) viruses with reduced baloxavir susceptibility has been reported in Japan. In December 2019, we detected a PA E23K mutant A(H1N1)pdm09 virus from a child without baloxavir treatment. The PA E23K mutant virus exhibited reduced baloxavir susceptibility but remained susceptible to neuraminidase inhibitors.

Streptococcus pyogenes (group A streptococcus; GAS) is an important gram-positive human pathogen capable of causing diseases ranging from mild superficial skin and pharyngeal infections to more severe invasive diseases, including streptococcal toxic shock syndrome (STSS). GAS produces a T protein, and T serotyping has considerable discriminatory power for epidemiological characterization of GAS. To clarify the relationship between STSS and pharyngitis in Japan, we examined the T serotypes of GAS strains isolated from clinical specimens of streptococcal infections (STSS, 951 isolates; pharyngitis, 16268 isolates) from 2005 to 2017.

High emissions of air pollutants from Northeast Asia are strongly influenced by air quality as well as by ecosystems. This study investigated the spatiotemporal variations in the sulfur isotopic ratio (δS) in atmospheric deposition at eleven monitoring stations in Japan from 2011 to 2016 and estimated the amount of transboundary transported anthropogenic sulfate (TRB) deposition using mass balance calculations. The δS of sulfate in precipitation ranged from -0.

In a cluster of hepatitis A infections that occurred in Nagano Prefecture in 2017, hepatitis A virus (HAV) was detected in asari clams (reference food) and the patients' fecal samples. Initially, the asari clams were suspected to be the infection source. However, the exact infection route remained unknown because a patient who had not consumed an asari clam dish also developed the disease.

Several suspected cases of zoonotic transmission of group A rotavirus (RVA)-related gastroenteritis were reported previously. In August 2012, G8P[14] RVA was detected in fecal specimens from a community gastroenteritis outbreak occurring during a school trip. In this study, additional analyses were performed and it was found that this strain had the G8-P[14]-I2-R2-C2-M2-A3-N2-T6-E2-H3 sequence, similar to bovine-like RVA strains.

Background: Japan has an aging population and an increasing number of patients who reside in long-term care and mental health facilities. Both pneumococcal pneumonia and influenza B infection outbreaks have been observed in these populations, although no reports have described concurrent outbreaks of pneumococcal pneumonia and influenza B infection in these facilities.
Case Presentation: Six patients and two staffs were initially diagnosed with influenza B infection at a mental health facility on March 14, 2015.

Accurate projection of carbon budget in forest ecosystems under future climate and atmospheric carbon dioxide (CO) concentration is important to evaluate the function of terrestrial ecosystems, which serve as a major sink of atmospheric CO. In this study, we examined the effects of spatial resolution of meteorological data on the accuracies of ecosystem model simulation for canopy phenology and carbon budget such as gross primary production (GPP), ecosystem respiration (ER), and net ecosystem production (NEP) of a deciduous forest in Japan. Then, we simulated the future (around 2085) changes in canopy phenology and carbon budget of the forest by incorporating high-resolution meteorological data downscaled by a regional climate model.
