Introduction: Allergic rhinitis (AR) is a chronic condition caused by an immunoglobulin E-mediated response to environmental allergens, which affects 10-40% of the global population. AR symptoms, such as nasal congestion and rhinorrhea, significantly reduce quality of life and are associated with sleep disturbances, further exacerbating the condition's burden. Despite the known impact of AR on sleep, the effects of intranasal corticosteroids on sleep quality have not been comprehensively reviewed.

Unlabelled: Hereditary transthyretin amyloidosis is autosomal dominant and results from mutations in the transthyretin gene. The Val30Met variant is the most common genetic mutation, although mutations vary within populations. More than 150 mutations in transthyretin have been reported; however, the Leu111Glu (p.

Uterine arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) are rare conditions that cause life-threatening bleeding. Endovascular treatment or total hysterectomy is performed to safely treat most AVMs. This case report describes a 54-year-old female patient with a large uterine AVM, uterine bleeding, and cardiac overload that was difficult to manage but successfully treated.

We discuss a case where the blood cultures of a patient with clinical chorioamnionitis and elevated D-dimer levels enabled early diagnosis of infective endocarditis. A 31-year-old female with a 39-week pregnancy presented to the obstetrics department with a fever. Cardiotocography revealed fetal tachycardia and severe late deceleration.

To investigate the effects of intentionally minimizing spinal motion and abdominal muscle contractions on intervertebral angles during quadruped upper and lower extremity lift (QULEL). Fifteen healthy men performed the QULEL under four conditions: without any special instructions (basic), with the intention to minimize spinal motion (intentional), with abdominal bracing (bracing), and with abdominal hollowing (hollowing). Each intervertebral angle was calculated from the local coordinate system using the marker data obtained from a motion capture system.

Objectives: Cold snare polypectomy (CSP) is widely performed for small colorectal polyps. However, small colorectal polyps sometimes include high-grade adenomas or carcinomas that require endoscopic resection with electrocautery. This study aimed to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a novel resection technique, hot snare polypectomy with low-power pure-cut current (LPPC-HSP) for small colorectal polyps, compared with CSP and conventional endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR).

: Unrestricted kinematic alignment total knee arthroplasty (KA-TKA) with a soft-tissue respecting technique (STRT) is a soft-tissue-dependent tibial resection entailing the restoration of the original soft-tissue tension using ligamentotaxis after resurfacing the femur, based on the concept of restoring the native or pre-osteoarthritis alignment in each patient. However, there is no consensus on the indications of unrestricted KA-TKA with the STRT. We modified the STRT, followed by an investigation of the effects of surgery on the postoperative hip-knee-ankle angle (HKAA).

Background: 5-aminolevulinic acid (5-ALA), a natural amino acid that is marketed alongside sodium ferrous citrate (SFC) as a functional food, blocks severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) proliferation in vitro and exerts anti-inflammatory effects. In this phase II open-label, prospective, parallel-group, randomized trial, we aimed to evaluate the safety and efficacy of 5-ALA in patients with mild-to-moderate coronavirus disease 2019.
Methods: This trial was conducted in patients receiving 5-ALA/SFC (250/145 mg) orally thrice daily for 7 days, followed by 5-ALA/SFC (150/87 mg) orally thrice daily for 7 days.

Background: The aim of this study was to investigate the prognostic impact of postoperative infections in patients who underwent resection for biliary malignancy, including intrahepatic cholangiocarcinoma, perihilar cholangiocarcinoma, distal cholangiocarcinoma, gallbladder carcinoma, and carcinoma of the ampulla of Vater.
Methods: This study was conducted in an 11-center retrospective cohort study. Patients with biliary tract cancer who underwent curative resection between April 2013 and March 2015 at 11 institutions in Japan were enrolled.

Image quality assessments (IQA) are an important task for providing appropriate medical care. Full-reference IQA (FR-IQA) methods, such as peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) and structural similarity (SSIM), are often used to evaluate imaging conditions, reconstruction conditions, and image processing algorithms, including noise reduction and super-resolution technology. However, these IQA methods may be inapplicable for medical images because they were designed for natural images.

Aim: This study was performed to evaluate the oncological impact of surgical site infection (SSI) and pneumonia on long-term outcomes after esophagectomy.
Methods: The Japan Society for Surgical Infection conducted a multicenter retrospective cohort study involving 407 patients with curative stage I/II/III esophageal cancer at 11 centers from April 2013 to March 2015. We investigated the association of SSI and postoperative pneumonia with oncological outcomes in terms of relapse-free survival (RFS) and overall survival (OS).

Purpose: Impacted common bile duct stones cause severe acute cholangitis. However, the early and accurate diagnosis, especially iso-attenuating stone impaction, is still challenging. Therefore, we proposed and validated the bile duct penetrating duodenal wall sign (BPDS), which shows the common bile duct penetrating the duodenal wall on coronal reformatted computed tomography (CT), as a novel sign of stone impaction.

Background: Postoperative infection after pancreatectomy in patients with pancreatic cancer often leads to poor prognosis. The aim of this study was to determine the prognostic effect of postoperative infection in patients with pancreatic cancer.
Methods: A multicenter cohort study was performed using a common database of patients with pancreatic cancer who underwent curative pancreatic resections between April 2013 and March 2015 at 15 high-volume centers in Japan.

Objectives: Self-expandable metal stents are widely used for the treatment of malignant colorectal stenosis (MCS). In elderly individuals with MCS, self-expandable metal stents are often used as a palliative treatment, but prophylactic stent placement is not recommended. We investigated the efficacy and safety of self-expandable metal stents for the elderly in a palliative setting, specifically in a prophylactic setting.

Gastrointestinal stromal tumors (GISTs) originating from the interstitial cells of Cajal in the muscularis propria are the most common mesenchymal tumor of the gastrointestinal tract. Multiple modalities, including computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography, ultrasonography, digital subtraction angiography, and endoscopy, have been performed to evaluate GISTs. CT is most frequently used for diagnosis, staging, surveillance, and response monitoring during molecularly targeted therapy in clinical practice.

Current ultrasound-guided punctures are difficult to perform as they are performed at an angle to the ultrasound image of the affected area, resulting in longer puncture times, lower success rates, and higher unexpected injury rates. Vertical puncture techniques have also been investigated, but the principle of needle tip detection remains unclear. To optimize ultrasound probes for puncture, the principle of needle tip detection should be understood.
