Background: Although myocardial infarction with nonobstructive coronary arteries (MINOCA) is more common in women, it is unknown whether sex is a risk factor for adverse outcomes in patients with MINOCA. We aimed to investigate the relationship between sex differences and outcomes of patients with MINOCA.

Methods And Results: A systematic literature search was performed in PubMed, Embase, and Cochrane databases from their inception until August 2023 for relevant studies.

Background And Aims: In the United States, the opioid epidemic has led many young people who use opioids to initiate injection drug use, putting them at risk for hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. However, community surveys to monitor HCV prevalence among young people who inject drugs (YPWID) are rare.

Methods: As part of Staying Safe (Ssafe), a trial to evaluate an HCV-prevention intervention, a community-recruited sample of 439 young people who use opioids (ages 18-30) in New York City (NYC) were screened from 2018 to 2021.

I-Metaiodobenzylguanidine Myocardial Scintigraphy in Discriminating Degenerative Parkinsonisms.

Background: I-Metaiodobenzylguanidine (I-MIBG) myocardial scintigraphy is a useful technique to differentiate Parkinson's disease (PD) from atypical parkinsonisms, since it is generally abnormal in PD and normal in the latter. Reduction of myocardial MIBG uptake is a supportive feature in the latest PD diagnostic criteria.

Risk of QTc Interval Prolongation Associated With Circulating Anti-Ro/SSA Antibodies Among US Veterans: An Observational Cohort Study.

Background Anti-Sjögren's syndrome-related antigen A-antibodies (anti-Ro/SSA-antibodies) are responsible for a novel form of acquired long-QT syndrome, owing to autoimmune-mediated inhibition of cardiac human ether-a-go-go-related gene-potassium channels. However, current evidence derives only from basic mechanistic studies and relatively small sample-size clinical investigations. Hence, the aim of our study is to estimate the risk of QTc prolongation associated with the presence of anti-Ro/SSA-antibodies in a large population of unselected subjects.

Background Systemic inflammation is a strong predictor of atrial fibrillation. A key role for electrical remodeling is increasingly recognized, and experimental data suggest that inflammatory cytokines can directly affect connexins resulting in gap-junction dysfunction. We hypothesized that systemic inflammation, regardless of its origin, promotes atrial electric remodeling in vivo, as a result of cytokine-mediated changes in connexin expression.

Building Emergency Medicine Trainee Competency in Pediatric Musculoskeletal Radiograph Interpretation: A Multicenter Prospective Cohort Study.

Objectives: As residency programs transition from time- to performance-based competency standards, validated tools are needed to measure performance-based learning outcomes and studies are required to characterize the learning experience for residents. Since pediatric musculoskeletal (MSK) radiograph interpretation can be challenging for emergency medicine trainees, we introduced Web-based pediatric MSK radiograph learning system with performance endpoints into pediatric emergency medicine (PEM) fellowships and determined the feasibility and effectiveness of implementing this intervention.

Anti-Inflammatory Effects of a Vegan Diet Versus the American Heart Association-Recommended Diet in Coronary Artery Disease Trial.

Background Dietary interventions may play a role in secondary cardiovascular prevention. hsCRP (High-sensitivity C-reactive protein) is a marker of risk for major adverse cardiovascular outcomes in coronary artery disease. Methods and Results The open-label, blinded end-point, EVADE CAD (Effects of a Vegan Versus the American Heart Association-Recommended Diet in Coronary Artery Disease) trial randomized participants (n=100) with coronary artery disease to 8 weeks of a vegan or American Heart Association-recommended diet with provision of groceries, tools to measure dietary intake, and dietary counseling.

The running-down phenomenon refers to 2 analogous but distinct entities that may be seen after epilepsy surgery. The first is clinical, and denotes a progressive diminution in seizures after epilepsy surgery in which the epileptogenic zone could not be completely removed (Modern Problems of Psychopharmacology 1970;4:306, Brain 1996:989). The second is electrographic, and refers to a progressive deactivation of a secondary seizure focus after removal of the primary epileptogenic zone.

Analysis of pharyngeal edema post-chemoradiation for head and neck cancer: Impact on swallow function.

Objectives: Edema is a frequent clinical observation following chemoradiation treatment (CRT) of oral/oropharyngeal cancer and is thought to contribute to post-CRT swallowing impairment. Our aims were to reliably quantify pharyngeal edema pre- and post-CRT from videofluoroscopic (VF) swallowing studies and to explore the relationship between edema and swallowing impairment. Swallowing impairment was captured using patient-reported swallowing outcomes (EAT-10) and with VF confirmation of impairment (DIGEST).
