The celebrated 1980 announcement that smallpox had been eradicated was made using the following definition of eradication: "Permanent reduction to zero of the worldwide incidence of infection caused by a specific agent as a result of deliberate efforts: intervention measures are no longer needed." Public health around the world works with this definition of "eradication," setting it as a goal for other infectious disease control programs. The definition is simple.

Article Synopsis
  • - Blood-based biomarkers are being explored to detect brain injuries from repetitive head impacts, specifically in former football players, by analyzing plasma levels of various proteins like tau and amyloid.
  • - A study involving 180 former football players and 60 control participants found that specific biomarkers (p-tau181 and p-tau231) were significantly elevated in the football players, indicating potential brain damage linked to their sport.
  • - The findings suggest that certain plasma proteins (p-tau, GFAP, NfL) could help in understanding and identifying neurological issues related to head impacts, with younger players showing more severe biomarker changes.

Introduction: Six hospitals within the New York City public hospital system implemented the Consult for Addiction Treatment and Care in Hospitals (CATCH) program, an interprofessional addiction consult service. A stepped-wedge cluster randomized controlled trial tested the effectiveness of CATCH for increasing initiation and engagement in post-discharge medication for opioid use disorder (MOUD) treatment among hospital patients with opioid use disorder (OUD). The objective of this study was to identify facility characteristics that were associated with stronger performance of CATCH.

Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is one of the main public health global burdens of the 21st century, responsible for over a million deaths every year. Hospital programs aimed at improving antibiotic use, referred to as antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs), can both optimize the treatment of infections and minimize adverse antibiotics events including the development and spread of AMR. The challenge of AMR is closely linked to the development and spread of healthcare-associated infection (HAIs).

Background: The significant increase in Alzheimer's disease and related dementia prevalence is a global health crisis, acutely impacting low- and lower-middle and upper-middle-income countries (LLMICs/UMICs).

Objective: The objective of this study is to identify key barriers and gaps in dementia care and research in LLMICs and UMICs.

Methods: We conducted an international, cross-sectional survey among clinicians and healthcare professionals (n = 249 in 34 countries) across LLMICs and UMICs, exploring patient demographics, use of clinical diagnosis, dementia evaluation, screening/evaluation tools, and care and treatment.

Introduction: Ignition interlock devices installed after conviction for driving under the influence of alcohol (DUI) have been shown to reduce subsequent DUI arrests (specific deterrence). However, there is little evidence on how interlock-device penalties might affect general deterrence, that is, deterring people from driving after consuming alcohol prior to a DUI conviction.

Methods: A discrete choice experiment was conducted and data were analyzed in 2023 with 583 U.

A call for compassionate opioid overdose response.

Int J Drug Policy

November 2024

T. Stephen Jones Public Health Consulting, 123 Black Birch Trail, Florence MA 01062, USA. Electronic address:

High dose and long-acting opioid overdose reversal drugs can precipitate withdrawal in people who are opioid dependent. Products recently brought to market for community use in the United States (US) have drawn international concern because of their increased risk of withdrawal. At the March 18-19, 2024, Compassionate Overdose Response Summit & Naloxone Dosing Meeting, a panel of harm reduction experts issued the following call to action: 1) people who use drugs should be directly involved in decisions regarding the research, development, selection, and distribution of opioid overdose reversal products; 2) regulatory agencies and pharmaceutical manufacturers should carefully consider and communicate the risk and duration of withdrawal associated with higher dose and longer-acting opioid antagonists; 3) take-home naloxone kits should include at least two doses of an intramuscular (IM) product containing 0.

Introduction: People living with HIV have high rates of hypertension. Integrated HIV and hypertension care with aligned multi-month dispensing of medications (MMD) could decrease the burden of care for individuals and health systems. We sought to describe hypertension control and evaluate its association with different durations of MMD among Malawian adults receiving integrated care with aligned dispensing of antiretroviral therapy (ART) and antihypertensive medication.
