The collapse of the World Trade Center (WTC) buildings in New York City generated a large plume of dust and smoke. WTC dust contained human carcinogens including metals, asbestos, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), persistent organic pollutants (POPs, including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and dioxins), and benzene. Excess levels of many of these carcinogens have been detected in biological samples of WTC-exposed persons, for whom cancer risk is elevated.

Progesterone is a natural hormone, mainly produced by the corpus luteum, with the foremost endocrine function on the secretory glands of the endometrium. Since being isolated, both natural and synthetic forms have been produced and are utilized for several purposes, including regulating the menstrual cycle and preventing endometrial hyperplasia. Specifically, the use of progestational agents is essential in the treatment of many common endocrine conditions, including polycystic ovary syndrome, congenital adrenal hyperplasia Turner syndrome and functional hypothalamic amenorrhea.

Introduction: Chronic pain is a personal experience influenced by multiple biopsychosocial factors. Using a pain intensity measure alone to assess the effectiveness of a chronic pain intervention fails to fully evaluate its impact on the multifaceted chronic pain experience. The holistic minimal clinically important difference (MCID) is a composite outcome developed to provide a comprehensive assessment of chronic pain in response to intervention, across 5 outcome domains: pain intensity, health-related quality of life, sleep quality, physical, and emotional function.

Inflammaging, a state of chronic, progressive low-grade inflammation during aging, is associated with several adverse clinical outcomes, including frailty, disability, and death. Chronic inflammation is a hallmark of aging and is linked to the pathogenesis of many aging-related diseases. Anti-inflammatory therapies are also increasingly being studied as potential anti-aging treatments, and clinical trials have shown benefits in selected aging-related diseases.

Cultural beliefs, personal experiences, and historic abuses within the healthcare system-rooted in structural racism-all contribute to community distrust in science and medicine. This lack of trust, particularly within underserved communities, contributes to decreased participation in clinical trials and a lack of representation in the data. Open dialogue about community concerns and experiences related to research participation and medical care processes can help build trust and change attitudes and behaviors that affect community health.

Purpose: The etiopathogenesis of coronal nonsyndromic craniosynostosis (cNCS), a congenital condition defined by premature fusion of 1 or both coronal sutures, remains largely unknown.
Methods: We conducted the largest genome-wide association study of cNCS followed by replication, fine mapping, and functional validation of the most significant region using zebrafish animal model.
Results: Genome-wide association study identified 6 independent genome-wide-significant risk alleles, 4 on chromosome 7q21.

Background: Although it is well-known that intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) is associated with physical and psychological morbidity, there is scant data on factors influencing social engagement after ICH. Understanding the relationship between functionality, psychological outcome and social engagement post-bleed may facilitate identification of patients at high risk for social isolation after ICH.
Methods: Patients ≥18-years-old with non-traumatic ICH from January 2015-March 2023 were identified from the Neurological Emergencies Outcomes at NYU (NEON) registry.

Objective: We sought to create a machine learning (ML) model to identify variables that would aid in the prediction of surgical morbidity in cases of placenta accreta spectrum (PAS).
Study Design: A multicenter analysis including all cases of PAS identified by pathology specimen confirmation, across five tertiary care perinatal centers in New York City from 2013 to 2022. We developed models to predict operative morbidity using 213 variables including demographics, obstetrical information, and limited prenatal imaging findings detailing placental location.

Herein, we present a simplified approach to prehospital mass casualty event (MASCAL) management called "Move, Treat, and Transport." Prior publications demonstrate a disconnect between MASCAL response training and actions taken during real-world incidents. Overly complex algorithms, infrequent training on their use, and chaotic events all contribute to the low utilization of formal triage systems in the real world.

We established a longitudinal acute slice preparation of transgenic mouse optic nerve to characterize membrane properties and coupling of glial cells by patch-clamp and dye-filling, complemented by immunohistochemistry. Unlike in cortex or hippocampus, the majority of EGFP + cells in optic nerve of the hGFAP-EGFP transgenic mouse, a tool to identify astrocytes, were characterized by time and voltage dependent K-currents including A-type K-currents, properties previously described for NG2 glia. Indeed, the majority of transgene expressing cells in optic nerve were immunopositive for NG2 proteoglycan, whereas only a minority show GFAP immunoreactivity.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to assess how various realignment strategies affect mechanical failure and clinical outcomes in pelvic incidence (PI)-stratified cohorts following adult spinal deformity (ASD) surgery.
Methods: Median and interquartile range statistics were calculated for demographics and surgical details. Further statistical analysis was used to define subsets within PI generating significantly different rates of mechanical failure.

Background: The prevalence of hypertension and uncontrolled hypertension may differ by age and sex.
Methods: We included participants in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities study at seven study visits over 33 years (visit 1: 15 636 participants; mean age, 54 years; 55% women), estimating sex differences in prevalence of hypertension (systolic blood pressure ≥130 mm Hg; diastolic blood pressure ≥80 mm Hg; or self-reported antihypertension medication use) and uncontrolled hypertension (systolic blood pressure ≥140 mm Hg or diastolic blood pressure ≥90 mm Hg) using unadjusted and comorbidity-adjusted models.
Results: The prevalence of hypertension increased with age from 40% (ages, 43-46 years) to 93% (ages, 91-94 years).

Objective: The objective was to evaluate factors associated with the long-term durability of outcomes in adult spinal deformity (ASD) patients.
Methods: Operative ASD patients fused from at least L1 to the sacrum with baseline (BL) to 5-year (5Y) follow-up were included. Substantial clinical benefit (SCB) in Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), numeric rating scale (NRS)-back, NRS-leg, and Scoliosis Research Society (SRS)-22r scores and physical component score were assessed on the basis of previously published values.
