Interpersonal Psychotherapy for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder: A Critical Review of the Evidence.

J Clin Psychiatry

May 2024

Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York State Psychiatric Institute, New York, New York.

Extensively researched, exposure-focused therapies have dominated the treatment of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). No treatment benefits all patients. Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT), a nonexposure, affect-focused treatment, has emerged over 2 decades as an alternative evidence-based PTSD intervention.

Background: Most justice-involved youth are supervised in community settings, where assessment and linkage to substance use (SU) treatment services are inconsistent and fragmented. Only 1/3 of youth with an identified SU need receive a treatment referral and even fewer initiate services. Thus, improving identification and linkage to treatment requires coordination across juvenile justice (JJ) and behavioral health (BH) agencies.

Censoring Intersex Science: A Medical School Scandal.

Arch Sex Behav

January 2023

NYS Psychiatric Institute, 1051 Riverside Drive, Unit 15, New York, NY, 10032, USA.

A senior pediatric endocrinologist at a leading medical school in Canada has for years provided the introductory lecture on Disorders of Sex Development/Intersexuality (DSD/I) in the standard second-year course. In 2020/2021, two students complained to medical school administrators about six specific issues of intersex theory and care that were addressed in the lecture (Polychronakos, 2021). Subsequently, the administration replaced the professor with a different lecturer, thus effectively censoring the dissemination of intersex science.

The hippocampus is the most common seizure focus in people. In the hippocampus, aberrant neurogenesis plays a critical role in the initiation and progression of epilepsy in rodent models, but it is unknown whether this also holds true in humans. To address this question, we used immunofluorescence on control healthy hippocampus and surgical resections from mesial temporal lobe epilepsy (MTLE), plus neural stem-cell cultures and multi-electrode recordings of ex vivo hippocampal slices.

Major depressive disorder (MDD) was previously hypothesized to be a disease of monoamine deficiency in which low levels of monoamines in the synaptic cleft were believed to underlie depressive symptoms. More recently, however, there has been a paradigm shift toward a neuroplasticity hypothesis of depression in which downstream effects of antidepressants, such as increased neurogenesis, contribute to improvements in cognition and mood. This review takes a top-down approach to assess how changes in behavior and hippocampal-dependent circuits may be attributed to abnormalities at the molecular, structural, and synaptic level.

The Information-Motivation-Behavioral Skills (IMB) Model has been used to understand adherence to medications and intentions to uptake pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to prevent HIV infection. In the current study, the IMB Model was used to understand factors that predict adherence to PrEP among a community-based cohort of 204 Black men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TGW) using structural equation modeling. PrEP motivation was directly associated with PrEP behavioral skills (β = 0.

Macrophages rely on tightly integrated metabolic rewiring to clear dying neighboring cells by efferocytosis during homeostasis and disease. Here we reveal that glutaminase-1-mediated glutaminolysis is critical to promote apoptotic cell clearance by macrophages during homeostasis in mice. In addition, impaired macrophage glutaminolysis exacerbates atherosclerosis, a condition during which, efficient apoptotic cell debris clearance is critical to limit disease progression.

Background: Alcohol use and abuse constitute a major public health problem and identifying their determinants is a priority. Social network analysis can indicate how characteristics of social networks are related to individual health behaviors. A growing number of studies have used social network analysis to examine how social network characteristics influence adult alcohol consumption, but this literature has never been systematically reviewed and summarized.

Introduction to the Special Section on Clinical Approaches to Adolescents with Gender Dysphoria.

Arch Sex Behav

October 2019

NYS Psychiatric Institute / Department of Psychiatry, Vagelos College of Physicians & Surgeons of Columbia University, 1051 Riverside Drive, Unit 15, New York, NY, 10032, USA.

Transgender development in adolescents often occurs in the context of diverse psychiatric symptoms or diagnoses preceding, co-occurring with, or following the onset of the atypical gender identity variations. In addition, it tends to upset the prevailing binary gender ideology and, thereby, strain intra-family relationships as well as elicit stigma in other social contexts. The purpose of this Special Section is to describe clinical approaches to assessment and treatment of patients presenting with such challenging combinations of problems, before the background of societal changes that are affecting the traditional binary gender ideology.

Department of Psychiatry, Columbia University, USA; Department of Molecular Therapeutics, NYS Psychiatric Institute, USA. Electronic address:

Glutaminase mediates the recycling of neurotransmitter glutamate, supporting most excitatory neurotransmission in the mammalian central nervous system. A constitutive heterozygous reduction in GLS1 engenders in mice a model of schizophrenia resilience and associated increases in Gln, reductions in Glu and activity-dependent attenuation of excitatory synaptic transmission. Hippocampal brain slices from GLS1 heterozygous mice metabolize less Gln to Glu.

"Diagnosing" Gender? Categorizing Gender-Identity Variants in the Anthropocene.

Arch Sex Behav

October 2019

Department of Psychiatry, NYS Psychiatric Institute, Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons of Columbia University, 1051 Riverside Drive, Unit 15, New York, NY, 10032, USA.

In recent decades, two interrelated major controversies have been unfolding in the area of sex/gender research. (1) Are gender-identity variants to be understood as psychopathology or natural variation? (2) Is gender (and perhaps even sex) better conceptualized as binary or non-binary? The answer depends on the conceptual context and related considerations of utility. In the context of evolutionary biology, marked variants of sex and gender decrease reproductive success and are, thereby, deemed pathologic.

Many PET tracers enable determination of fluctuations in neurotransmitter release, yet glutamate specifically can not be visualized in a noninvasive manner. Several studies point to the possibility of visualizing fluctuations in glutamate release by changes in affinity of the mGluR5 radioligand [C]ABP688. These studies use pharmacological challenges to alter glutamate levels, and so probe release, but have not measured chronic alterations in receptor occupancy due to altered neurotransmission relevant to chronic neuropsychiatric disorders or their treatment.

Human Hippocampal Neurogenesis Persists throughout Aging.

Cell Stem Cell

April 2018

Department of Psychiatry, Columbia University, New York, NY 10032, USA; Division of Molecular Imaging and Neuropathology, NYS Psychiatric Institute, New York, NY 10032, USA.

Adult hippocampal neurogenesis declines in aging rodents and primates. Aging humans are thought to exhibit waning neurogenesis and exercise-induced angiogenesis, with a resulting volumetric decrease in the neurogenic hippocampal dentate gyrus (DG) region, although concurrent changes in these parameters are not well studied. Here we assessed whole autopsy hippocampi from healthy human individuals ranging from 14 to 79 years of age.
