Hirschsprung's disease is a congenital condition characterized by the absence of ganglion cells in the intestines, leading to bowel obstruction. The lack of ganglion cells disrupts the normal motility of the intestines, causing a functional obstruction. This can lead to enterocolitis, an inflammation of the intestines, which is a serious complication in infants with Hirschsprung's disease.

Radio Frequency Ablation of Enlarged Thyroid Nodules: A Case Report.

In the thyroid, abnormal growth can be the result of either benign thyroid nodules (BTNs) or differentiated thyroid cancers (DTCs). If the growth is confirmed to be a DTC, surgical intervention, either a partial or total thyroidectomy, is recommended. Although a majority of BTNs do not require treatment, intervention becomes necessary when nodules cause symptoms, enlargement, or a rare suspicion of malignancy.

Background: Chronic Low Back Pain (cLBP) poses a significant health challenge, leading to functional disability and reduced quality of life. Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment (OMT) is emerging as a therapeutic option for cLBP, but the brain mechanisms underlying its analgesic effect remain unclear.

Materials And Methods: Thirty cLBP patients were randomly exposed to either four weekly sessions of OMT (N=16) or Sham treatment (N=14).

Confluent populations of the epithelial cell line, MDCK II, develop circumferential tight junctions joining adjacent cells to create a barrier to the paracellular movement of solutes and water. Treatment of MDCK II cell populations from the apical surface with 1 mM Na-caprate increased permeability to macromolecules (Leak Pathway) without increasing monolayer disruption or cell death. Graphical analysis of the apparent permeability versus solute Stokes radius for a size range of fluorescein-dextran species indicates apical 1 mM Na-caprate enhances Leak Pathway permeability by increasing the number of Leak Pathway openings without significantly affecting opening size.

The effect of osteopathic manipulative treatment on quality of life in patients with cardiac implantable electronic devices.

Context: Osteopathic manipulative treatment (OMT) has been demonstrated to have an effect on the autonomic nervous system, which may have antiarrhythmic effects. The effects of OMT in patients with cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs) have not previously been reported. This study investigated the impact of OMT on quality of life (QOL) in this patient population.

Pembrolizumab-Induced Colitis and Diarrhea in the Treatment of Sporadic Colorectal Cancer: A Case Report.

Pembrolizumab is a programmed cell death receptor-1 (PD-1) blocking immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) that is a mainstay of cancer treatment. Pembrolizumab has a lower incidence of colitis and diarrhea compared to other ICIs. The current study presents the case of a 30-year-old female patient on pembrolizumab with stage IV colon cancer who presented with diarrhea (50 times a day) and symptoms of colitis.

Contraception and abortion topics are variably, but often poorly, addressed in medical school curricula. Restrictions on contraceptive and abortion care at faith-based hospitals may hinder comprehensive family planning training for medical students during Ob/Gyn clerkships. Here we investigated whether medical students at faith-based and non-faith-based clerkships experienced different observations during their Ob/Gyn clerkship and/or differences in self-perceived competency in patient counseling, objective knowledge, and perceived adequacy of training in contraception and abortion topics post-clerkship.

Purpose: To provide an updated assessment of hip arthroscopy use by using an institutional database that is specific to the treatment of femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS).

Methods: All patients undergoing hip arthroscopy for the treatment of FAIS were retrospectively identified between the years 2014 and 2022 via Current Procedural Terminology coding in a multi-institutional, single health system database. A longitudinal analysis was performed to identify trends in the use of arthroscopic techniques including capsular and labral treatment, osteoplasty, and traction set-up.

New York City's two new supervised drug injection sites (SDISs) reversed 114 overdoses within two months, and 585 people injecting drugs visited the facility 4,974 times.

Does regular attendance in supplemental virtual near-peer tutoring in anatomy laboratory content improve anatomy performance for medical students?

Near-peer tutoring (NPT) programs are popular vehicles to supplement traditional delivery of medical school curricula, including for anatomy laboratory (AL) content. While NPT programs can result in improved preclinical coursework performance for tutees, little to no data specifically show a benefit of NPT in AL course performance. In 2021, NYIT College of Osteopathic Medicine launched an NPT program where qualified second-year students led group tutoring sessions for first-year students.

A further consequence of this is hepatic encephalopathy (HE), a neuropsychiatric syndrome that can range in severity from mild cognitive disturbances to full coma. This case follows the course of a 63-year-old Caucasian female with chronic liver cirrhosis who presents with recurrent episodes of mental status changes.
