Background: Primary percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) is the established treatment for ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI), but often it is not readily available in low-resource settings. We assessed the safety and efficacy of the pharmaco-invasive strategy compared to primary PCI for STEMI in Latin America.
Methods: MEDLINE, Embase, and Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature (LILACS) were searched for the period from their inception to September 2023, for studies that compared a pharmaco-invasive strategy vs primary PCI in Latin America.

Study Objective: The osmol gap can help detect and manage those with toxic alcohol exposure, and it is altered by all alcohols including ethanol. The optimal correction for ethanol that would allow accurate detection of an alternative alcohol is unclear.
Methods: We conducted a prospective cohort study to assess baseline variations in osmol gap, and then to assess the validity of 2 commonly used coefficients (correction factors) for ethanol.

Introduction: Inclisiran is a novel drug that employs ribonucleic acid (RNA) interference to lower the levels of the proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) protein. It has demonstrated a significant reduction in LDL cholesterol levels compared to a placebo. We aim to comprehensively evaluate the safety of using Inclisiran in patients with dyslipidemia and ASCVD or an ASCVD risk equivalent.

The use of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) has emerged as a rescue intervention for hemodynamically unstable patients and prophylactic intraprocedural hemodynamic support in the cardiac catheterization laboratory. The prompt initiation of ECMO provides immediate hemodynamic support and allows for the completion of bridging and/or life-saving interventions. However, there are no clinical practice guidelines for the use of extracorporeal support in this area.

Kaposi Sarcoma (KS) is a vascular tumor originating from endothelial cells and is associated with human herpesvirus 8 (KSHV) infection. It disproportionately affects populations facing health disparities. Although antiretroviral therapy (ART) has improved KS control in people with HIV (PWH), treatment options for advanced KS remain limited.

Although the addition of an ileostomy to low anterior resection (LAR) may often be considered preventative of anastomotic leakage (AL), evidence that clearly demonstrates such benefit is lacking. This study aimed to identify the impact of adding an ileostomy upon AL and organ-space surgical site infection (SSI) rates in patients with lower, middle, or upper rectal cancer. This case-control study included rectal cancer patients who had undergone elective LAR in the American College of Surgeons-National Surgical Quality Improvement Program dataset between 2016 and 2022.

Background: Immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) have been associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular and thromboembolic events. However, the incidence of cardiovascular and thromboembolic events associated with ICIs in gastroesophageal cancers is unknown.
Methods: We performed a propensity score-matched cohort study using the TriNetX Analytics Network database, which comprises de-identified data from over 130 participating healthcare institutions.

Gout is caused by monosodium urate crystal deposition within joints and periarticular structures. It is characterized by the typical arthritis symptoms such as pain, swelling, and redness usually involving the first metatarsophalangeal joint. Recurrent attacks of gout are common, especially after major surgical procedures during which intense cell turnover takes place and can lead to hyperuricemia and accumulation of monosodium urate crystals.

Background And Hypothesis: Daprodustat, an oral hypoxia-inducible factor prolyl hydroxylase inhibitor, is approved for treatment of anemia in dialysis patients with CKD in some parts of the world. This subgroup analysis examined the efficacy and safety of daprodustat versus darbepoetin alfa in patients with anemia of CKD undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD).
Methods: ASCEND-D (NCT02879305) was an open-label, Phase 3 trial; patients with CKD were randomized to daprodustat daily and epoetin alfa (HD patients) or darbepoetin alfa (PD patients).
