Hemophagocytic lymphohistiocytosis (HLH) secondary to tick-borne infections is a rare but potentially life-threatening syndrome. We performed a scoping review according to PRISMA guidelines to systematically analyze the existing literature on the topic. A total of 98 patients were included, with a mean age of 43.

This study was a secondary gendered analysis of interviews with Latina cisgender women ( = 20) recruited from an urban safety net hospital inNew York City between August 2019 and October 2022. All women were indicated for PrEP by the provider.

An Epistemic Look at Parental Conceptual Knowledge and Oral Health Outcomes in Children.

This study explores the impact of parental oral health knowledge on children's oral health, investigating if limited knowledge contributes to poor outcomes. The CAMBRA caries risk assessment and the World Health Organization dmft/DMFT index measure oral health. Over 23 months, the Knowledge Related to Oral Health Literacy (KROHL) questionnaire assesses parental knowledge in 4 domains and 5 oral health conditions.

Exploiting Natural Language Processing to Unveil Topics and Trends of Traumatic Brain Injury Research.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) has evolved from a topic of relative obscurity to one of widespread scientific and lay interest. The scope and focus of TBI research have shifted, and research trends have changed in response to public and scientific interest. This study has two primary goals: first, to identify the predominant themes in TBI research; and second, to delineate "hot" and "cold" areas of interest by evaluating the current popularity or decline of these topics.

Hyperkalemia and Plant-Based Diets in Chronic Kidney Disease.

Traditional dietary guidelines for patients with kidney disease recommend restriction of plant foods due to concerns about hyperkalemia and associated adverse events. Studies conducted over several decades have shown that the basis for these guidelines does not match the evidence. Serum potassium levels can be elevated in patients with reduced kidney function after consumption of foods with potassium-based additives or with highly concentrated potassium content such as juices, dried fruit, or purees.

Integrating substance use peer support and screening brief intervention and referral to treatment services in the emergency department: a descriptive study of the ED leads program.

Background: The ED Leads program was introduced to 11 emergency departments (EDs) within New York City public hospitals from 2018 to 2019 to address a need for addiction support services in the ED. The purpose of this study is to (i) describe the ED Leads blended licensed-clinician and peer counselor team model in the ED at three hospitals, (ii) provide a descriptive analysis of patient engagement and referrals to substance use disorder (SUD) care post-intervention, and (iii) highlight potential barriers and facilitators to implementing the model.

Methods: The program intended to combine Screening Brief Intervention and Referral to Treatment and peer support services.

Bolus Feeding Via Gastric Versus Oral Routes in Very Preterm Neonates.

Background: We intend to investigate the association of bolus orogastric tube (BOG) and nipple bottle (N) feedings with postnatal growth in very premature neonates (VPN: gestational age between 28 and 33 weeks).

Material And Methods: The days of life (DOL) to achieve full combined oral and gastric enteral nutrition (FEN) and attain body weight (BW) of 2200 g (Wt22) and the length of hospitalization (LOH) were retrospectively associated with clinical and BOG and N feeding-related variables via multivariate regression analyses. Correlations were performed to ascertain the strength of associations.

Comparison of In-Hospital Outcomes between Early and Late Catheter-Directed Thrombolysis in Acute Pulmonary Embolism: A Retrospective Observational Study.

The purpose of this study is to evaluate whether early initiation of catheter-directed thrombolysis (CDT) in patients presenting with acute pulmonary embolism is associated with improved in-hospital outcomes. A retrospective cohort was extracted from the 2016-2019 National Inpatient Sample database, consisting of 21,730 weighted admissions undergoing CDT acute PE. From the time of admission, the sample was divided into early (<48 h) and late interventions (>48 h).

Application of an opioid use disorder cascade of care in a large public health system.

Over the past decade, hospitals and health systems have increasingly adopted interventions to address the needs of patients with substance use disorders. The Opioid Use Disorder (OUD) Cascade of Care provides a framework for organizing and tracking patient health milestones over time and can assist health systems in identifying areas of intervention to maximize the impact of evidence-based services. However, detailed protocols are needed to guide health systems in how to operationalize the OUD Cascade and track outcomes using electronic health records.

These devices use a nicotine-rich liquid, which is aerosolized electronically, producing vapors that may also include hazardous chemicals and heavy metals.

Educational use of clinical simulation is a way for students to immerse themselves within a realistic yet safe and structured environment as they practice clinical skills. It is widely used in healthcare training and evaluation, and there are best practices for design, implementation, debriefing, and assessment. An increasing number of genetic counseling graduate programs use simulation in various ways, ranging from role-plays to working with professional simulated/standardized patient (SP) actors.

Evaluating completion rates of COVID-19 contact tracing surveys in New York City.

Importance: Contact tracing is the process of identifying people who have recently been in contact with someone diagnosed with an infectious disease. During an outbreak, data collected from contact tracing can inform interventions to reduce the spread of infectious diseases. Understanding factors associated with completion rates of contact tracing surveys can help design improved interview protocols for ongoing and future programs.

Introduction: There are scant data on implementation of large-scale direct-acting antiviral treatment for hepatitis C virus in jails in the U.S. New York City Health + Hospitals/Correctional Health Services aimed to scale up hepatitis C virus treatment in the New York City jail system.

A simple prediction score for postoperative mortality after decortication.

Background: Decortication of the lung, either by video-thoracoscopy or thoracotomy is potentially a morbid procedure and has significantly higher mortality compared with other major thoracic procedures. Much of this difference can be attributed to other significant comorbidities and to the non-elective nature of the surgery. Our primary goal was to recognize the preoperative unique characteristics of patients who had postoperative mortality within the first 30 days.
