Background: Ortholog prediction, essential for various genomic research areas, faces growing inconsistencies amidst the expanding array of ortholog databases. The common strategy of computing consensus orthologs introduces additional arbitrariness, emphasizing the need to examine the causes of such inconsistencies and identify proteins susceptible to prediction errors.
Results: We introduce the Signal Jaccard Index (SJI), a novel metric rooted in unsupervised genome context clustering, designed to assess protein similarity.

Spontaneous preterm birth (sPTB) poses significant challenges, affecting neonatal health and neurodevelopmental outcomes worldwide. The specific effects of placental trophoblasts on the pathological development of sPTB subtypes-preterm premature rupture of fetal membranes (pPROM) and spontaneous preterm labor (sPTL)-are not fully understood, making it crucial to uncover these impacts for the development of effective therapeutic strategies. Using single-nucleus RNA sequencing, we investigated transcriptomic and cellular differences at the maternal-fetal interface in pPROM and sPTL placentas.

For decades, sociological research has examined the role of stigma in contributing to health disparities, yet such research seldom grapples with the interplay between individuals and structures. There is a particular paucity of research on abortion that concurrently examines individual experiences with stigma and structural barriers. In this article, we use telehealth abortion as a case, which now accounts for one in five abortions in the United States.

Lung infection is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality worldwide. Even with appropriate antibiotic and antiviral treatment, mortality in hospitalized patients often exceeds 10%, highlighting the need for the development of new therapeutic strategies. Of late, cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator (CFTR) is - in addition to its well-established roles in the lung airway and extrapulmonary organs - increasingly recognized as a key regulator of alveolar homeostasis and defense.

Anthropogenically driven environmental change has imposed substantial threats on biodiversity, including the emergence of infectious diseases that have resulted in declines of wildlife globally. In response to pathogen invasion, maintaining diversity within host populations across heterogenous environments is essential to facilitating species persistence. White-nose syndrome is an emerging fungal pathogen that has caused mass mortalities of hibernating bats across North America.

Compared with their free-ranging counterparts, wild animals in captivity experience different conditions with lasting physiological and behavioural effects. Although shifts in gene expression are expected to occur upstream of these phenotypes, we found no previous gene expression comparisons of captive versus free-ranging mammals. We assessed gene expression profiles of three brain regions (cortex, olfactory bulb and hippocampus) of wild shrews () compared with shrews kept in captivity for two months and undertook sample dropout to examine robustness given limited sample sizes.

Familial platelet disorder (FPD) is associated with germline mutations, establishing a preleukemic state and increasing the risk of developing leukemia. Currently, there are no intervention strategies to prevent leukemia progression. Single-cell RNA sequencing ( = 10) combined with functional analysis of samples from patients with -FPD ( > 75) revealed that FPD hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HSPCs) displayed increased myeloid differentiation and suppressed megakaryopoiesis because of increased activation of prosurvival and inflammatory pathways.

The unsustainable use of wildlife is a primary driver of global biodiversity loss. No comprehensive global dataset exists on what species are in trade, their geographic origins, and trade's ultimate impacts, which limits our ability to sustainably manage trade. The United States is one of the world's largest importers of wildlife, with trade data compiled in the US Law Enforcement Management Information System (LEMIS).

The fertile gonad includes cells of two distinct developmental origins: the somatic mesoderm and the germ line. How somatic and germ cells interact to develop and maintain fertility is not well understood. Here, using grafting experiments and transgenic reporter animals, we find that a specific part of the gonad-the germinal zone-acts as a sexual organizer to induce and maintain de novo germ cells and somatic gonads in the cnidarian .

Fertility-sparing treatment (FST) has become a key aspect of managing gynecologic cancers in reproductive-age patients who wish to preserve fertility. Several leading clinical societies, including the European Society of Gynecological Oncology, the European Society for Radiotherapy and Oncology, the European Society of Pathology, and the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology, have recently published evidence-based guidelines on fertility-sparing strategies and posttreatment surveillance of patients with early-stage gynecologic cancers, in particular endometrial and cervical cancers. These guidelines highlight MRI as essential to initial patient selection and follow-up.

Radiopharmaceutical therapy (RPT) is advancing rapidly and achieving wider clinical application. However, RPT is not yet optimized in practice, as tumor and normal-organ dose estimates and, in turn, dose-response relationships remain poorly defined. Internal dosimetry is evolving to address such issues, transitioning from the estimation of population-average organ-level or tumor-level doses to individualized patient-specific sub-organ or sub-tumor doses.
