Healthcare staff perceptions of an electronic hand hygiene monitoring system within a large university system.

Objective: The acceptability of an electronic HH monitoring system (EHHMS) was evaluated among hospital staff members.

Design: An electronic HH monitoring system was implemented in June 2020 at a large, academic medical center. An interdisciplinary team developed a cross-sectional survey to gather staff perceptions of the EHHMS.

Neurodegeneration: 2024 update.

This review highlights a collection of both diverse and highly impactful studies published in the previous year selected by the author from the neurodegenerative neuropathology literature. As with previous reviews in this series, the focus is, to the best of my ability, to highlight human tissue-based experimentation most relevant to experimental and clinical neuropathologists. A concerted effort was made to balance the selected studies across neurodegenerative disease categories, approaches, and methodologies to capture the breadth of the research landscape.

To increase trust in clinical research: Be worthy of trust and enhance the role of clinical research nurses.

There has been an erosion of trust in medical care and clinical research, and this has raised issues about whether institutions and investigators conducting clinical research are worthy of trust. We review recent literature on research on trust and trustworthiness in the clinical research enterprise and identify opportunities to enhance trustworthiness, which will likely increase participant trust in clinical research. In addition, we review materials reporting the results of national polls related to the public's trust in different occupations.

Risk factors for recurrence in stage I colorectal cancer after curative resection: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Purpose: Patients with stage I colorectal cancer (CRC) rarely experience recurrence after curative resection. Therefore, the risk factors for stage I CRC recurrence are yet to be established. We aimed to identify risk factors for stage I CRC recurrence.

Efficacy of prophylactic sodium valproate in pediatric migraines: a systematic review of randomized clinical studies.

Background: Migraine is a neurological disorder that is chronic and presents with episodes of paroxysmal features consisting of multiphase attacks of head pain, along with other symptoms related to neurological dysfunction such as sensitivity to movement, photophobia, phonophobia, nausea, and vomiting. Antiseizure medications are frequently used for the treatment of migraine. Of the antiseizure medications, sodium valproate and topiramate have received approval from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to prevent adult migraine.

Insecticides may facilitate the escape of weeds from biological control.

Background: Preventative pesticide seed treatments (hereafter preventative pest management or PPM) are common corn and soybean treatments, and often include both fungicides and neonicotinoid insecticides. While PPM is intended to protect crops from soil-borne pathogens and early season insect pests, these seed treatments may have detrimental effects on biological control of weed seeds by insects.

Methods: Here, in two 3-year corn-soy rotations in Pennsylvania USA, we investigated a PPM approach to insect management compared to an integrated pest management approach (IPM) and a "no (insect) pest management" (NPM) control.

Engineering mechanisms of proton-coupled electron transfer to a titanium-substituted polyoxovanadate-alkoxide.

Metal oxides are promising catalysts for small molecule hydrogen chemistries, mediated by interfacial proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) processes. Engineering the mechanism of PCET has been shown to control the selectivity of reduced products, providing an additional route for improving reductive catalysis with metal oxides. In this work, we present kinetic resolution of the rate determining proton-transfer step of PCET to a titanium-doped POV, TiVO(OCH) with 9,10-dihydrophenazine by monitoring the loss of the cationic radical intermediate using stopped-flow analysis.

Morrey Award 2023: radial head donor plug for capitellum osteochondral autograft transfer: a cadaveric biomechanical analysis.

Background: Limitations to using the knee as donor cartilage include cartilage thickness mismatch and donor site morbidity. Using the radial head as donor autograft for capitellar lesions may allow for local graft harvest without distant donor site morbidity. The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the feasibility of performing local osteochondral autograft transfer from the nonarticular cartilaginous rim of the radial head to the capitellum.

Does morbid obesity negatively impact perioperative outcomes following elective reverse shoulder arthroplasty?: a propensity-matched comparative study.

Background: The incidence of primary reverse total shoulder arthroplasty (rTSA) and the prevalence of obesity have increased in the United States. Despite this, the literature assessing the effect of morbid obesity (body mass index≥40 kg/m) on perioperative surgical outcomes remains inconsistent.

Methods: A retrospective review of consecutive elective primary rTSA cases from January 2016 through September 2023 at a single tertiary referral center was performed.

Background: Sex steroid hormones are critical for maintaining pregnancy and optimal fetal development. Air pollutants are potential endocrine disruptors that may disturb sex steroidogenesis during pregnancy, potentially leading to adverse health outcomes.

Methods: In the Environmental influences on Child Health Outcomes Understanding Pregnancy Signals and Infant Development pregnancy cohort (Rochester, NY), sex steroid concentrations were collected at study visits in early-, mid-, and late-pregnancy in 299 participants.

Implementing a Responsible Conduct of Research Curriculum for an Undergraduate Summer Clinical Research Program in Quantitative Sciences.

Objectives: Instilling the principles of ethical and responsible medical research is critical for educating the next generation of clinical researchers. We developed a responsible conduct of research (RCR) workshop and associated curriculum for undergraduate trainees in a quantitative clinical research program.

Methods: Topics in this 7-module RCR workshop are relevant to undergraduate trainees in quantitative fields, many of whom are learning about these concepts for the first time.

Centering historically minoritized populations to design effective messages about an evidence-based policy to advance social equity.

Researchers have raised concerns that messages describing racial disparities in social outcomes can reduce or polarize support for public policies to address inequality. We questioned this assumption by testing the impact of carefully crafted messages about child tax credit (CTC) expansion. We conducted two randomized message trials, study 1 using Prolific's nonprobability panel ( = 1,402) and study 2 using SSRS's Opinion Panel, a web-based probability sample of US adults ( = 4,483).

Neonatal inflammation and near-term white matter microstructure in infants born very preterm.

Background: Severe neonatal inflammatory conditions in very preterm infants (VPT: <32 weeks gestational age, GA) are linked to adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes. Differences in white matter (WM) microstructure of the corpus callosum (CC) have been observed at age 6 in VPT children with a history of severe neonatal inflammation. The goal of this study was to determine whether these CC differences can be detected at term-equivalent age using diffusion MRI (dMRI), and whether neonatal inflammation is associated with altered WM in additional tracts implicated in the encephalopathy of prematurity.

This 10-year retrospective study evaluated the malignancy risk in surgically treated patients with thyroid nodules classified as Bethesda Category III by comparing FNAC findings with histopathological outcomes.

Background: The inclusion of artificial intelligence in medical education, specifically through the use of ChatGPT (OpenAI, San Francisco, CA), has transformed learning and generated many ethical questions. This study aims to analyze the medical students' ethical concerns about using ChatGPT in medical education, focusing on privacy, accuracy, and professional integrity.

Methods: The study format was a cross-sectional survey distributed to 219 medical students at ABWA Medical College, Pakistan.

Outcome Measures to Evaluate Functional Recovery in Survivors of Respiratory Failure: A Scoping Review.

Background: Respiratory failure is a life-threatening condition affecting millions of individuals in the United States annually. Survivors experience persistent functional impairments, decreased quality of life, and cognitive impairments. However, no established standard exists for measuring functional recovery among survivors of respiratory failure.

Seasonal productivity of the equatorial Atlantic shaped by distinct wind-driven processes.

The eastern equatorial Atlantic hosts a productive marine ecosystem that depends on upward supply of nitrate, the primary limiting nutrient in this region. The annual productivity peak, indicated by elevated surface chlorophyll levels, occurs in the Northern Hemisphere summer, roughly coinciding with strengthened easterly winds. For enhanced productivity in the equatorial Atlantic, nitrate-rich water must rise into the turbulent layer above the Equatorial Undercurrent.

The Atlas of Protein-Protein Interactions in Cancer (APPIC)-a webtool to visualize and analyze cancer subtypes.

Cancer is a complex disease with heterogeneous mutational and gene expression patterns. Subgroups of patients who share a phenotype might share a specific genetic architecture including protein-protein interactions (PPIs). We developed the Atlas of Protein-Protein Interactions in Cancer (APPIC), an interactive webtool that provides PPI subnetworks of 10 cancer types and their subtypes shared by cohorts of patients.

Services and payments associated with the medicare new technology add-on payment program.

In 2001, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services established the New Technology Add-On Payment (NTAP) program to incentivize access to costly new technologies for Medicare beneficiaries. These technologies, authorized by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), must demonstrate "substantial clinical improvement" when compared to existing technologies. However, in FY2021, the FDA introduced two expedited authorization pathways, allowing technologies with either designation to bypass the "substantial clinical improvement" criterion.

Paying for home care out-of-pocket is common and costly across the income spectrum among older adults.

Many older adults with personal care needs rely on paid caregivers to remain in the community ("home care"). Those without Medicaid or private long-term-care insurance must pay out-of-pocket for care. We used the Health and Retirement Study to identify the prevalence and financial burden of paying for home care out-of-pocket in 2002-2018, by income and dementia status.

During the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident on March 11, 2011, radionuclides such as tritium were released into the environment across Japan, obscuring the natural background signal of tritium in precipitation. This anthropogenic component was rapidly washed out by precipitation according to measurements in Japan. However, the impact of the accident on the natural tritium-based estimation of water system transit times in Fukushima and other prefectures in Japan remains uncertain.
