Background: Asian Americans (AA) in the United States represent a heterogenous population from various ethnic backgrounds. We compared cancer and cardiovascular disease (CVD) mortality between various AA groups and Non-Hispanic White (NHW) patients diagnosed with urologic cancer.
Methods: We assembled a population-based cohort that included 389,114 prostate cancer, 98,721 renal cell cancer, and 126,485 bladder cancer patients.

The study of protein homeostasis in vivo is crucial for our understanding of the functions of cells and organisms. However, complex organisms, such as mammals, are built from heterogeneous tissues and cell-types. These cell-types are often specialized and react in different ways to the same physiological or pathological stimulus.

Growing evidence suggests exposure to high temperatures may result in increased urban crime, a known driver of health and health inequity. Theoretical explanations have been developed to describe the heat-crime relationship without consensus yet achieved among experts. This scoping review aims to summarize evidence of heat-crime associations in U.

The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly impacted the HIV care continuum (HCC), presenting challenges while also driving positive transformations globally. This study examines the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on HCC in high-income countries, aiming to identify barriers and facilitators to care delivery amidst global health challenges. This study employs JBI mixed-methods systematic review methodology.

Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) can be measured directly, or estimated from biomarkers like serum creatinine and cystatin C, or both. Measuring GFR in children is cumbersome, as it requires the intravenous injection of an exogenous filtration marker like iohexol, and several blood samples to determine the concentration-time decay curve. Serum creatinine (SCr) measurement is inexpensive and is part of the routine biochemical blood tests that are commonly requested in daily clinical practice.

Background: A family history of health conditions may reflect shared genetic and/or environmental risk. It is not well known to what extent family history impacts outcomes among patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Herein, we studied the associations of family history of CKD, diabetes, and other conditions with common comorbidities and kidney disease progression among patients with CKD.

Purpose: Black perinatal people in the United States are disproportionately affected by morbidity and mortality. An emerging hypothesis is that these disparities may be in part due to poor communication in obstetric care which may lead to poor perinatal care quality and adverse health outcomes. The purpose of this review is to provide a systematic review of the literature on patient-clinician communication amongst Black patients in perinatal healthcare settings.

Through meta-genetic analysis of Cucumis melo sweetness, we expand the description of the complex genetic architecture of this trait. Integration of extensive new results with published QTL data provides an outline towards construction of a melon sweetness pan-QTLome. An ultimate objective in crop genetics is describing the complete repertoire of genes and alleles that shape the phenotypic variation of a quantitative trait within a species.

Cryptococcus deneoformans (Cd) and C. neoformans (Cn) differ in geographic prevalence and dermatotropism, with Cd strains more commonly isolated from temperate regions and skin infections. Rising global temperatures prompt concerns regarding selection for environmental fungal species with increased thermotolerance, as high mammalian temperatures provide protection against many fungal species.

Cardiac disease is a common cause of mortality in many primates housed in zoological settings. At the Bronx Zoo, between 2007 and 2018, there were ten incidences of sudden cardiac death in adult male geladas (), none of which showed premonitory signs. Due to concerns of occult cardiac disease and fatal arrhythmogenic events, complete cardiac examinations were performed in three clinically normal, adult male geladas.

The golden-mantled howler monkey () represents an excellent sentinel species for use in One Health modeling because of its extensive natural range, regular contact with humans and domestic animals, and susceptibility to zoonotic diseases. The purpose of this research is to establish baseline health assessments for free ranging golden-mantled howler monkeys in Marino Las Baulas National Park, Costa Rica. In April 2013, seven free ranging golden-mantled howler monkeys were anesthetized for physical examinations and biological sample collection, including blood for hematology and blood gas analysis.

Purpose: Naxitamab is a humanized form of the murine anti-GD2 monoclonal antibody (mAb) 3F8. In an international trial, naxitamab+GM-CSF was effective against chemo-resistant high-risk neuroblastoma (HR-NB), leading to approval by the Food and Drug Administration. We now report results with patients in 1st complete remission (CR).

Background Contrast-enhanced mammography (CEM) is an emerging modality that generates low-energy (LE) images that are visually equivalent to full-field digital mammography (FFDM) and recombined images that show lesion vascularity such as MRI. Supplemental whole-breast US increases cancer detection rates when performed with FFDM but not with MRI. Purpose To compare the performance of CEM, LE images, and LE images supplemented with whole-breast US in breast cancer detection during screening.

Background Recent studies have investigated how deep learning (DL) algorithms applied to CT using two-dimensional (2D) segmentation (sagittal or axial planes) can calculate bone mineral density (BMD) and predict osteoporosis-related outcomes. Purpose To determine whether TotalSegmentator, an nnU-net algorithm, can measure three-dimensional (3D) vertebral body BMD across consistently imaged thoracic levels (T1-T10) at any conventional, noncontrast chest CT examination. Materials and Methods This study is a secondary analysis of a multicenter ( = 6) prospective cohort, the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA).

Background The US Liver Imaging Reporting and Data System (LI-RADS) includes an assessment category (US-1, negative; US-2, subthreshold; and US-3, positive) and a visualization score reflecting image quality (VIS-A, no or minimal limitations; VIS-B, moderate limitations; and VIS-C, severe limitations). The US-3 and VIS-C impact patient treatment. Purpose To establish the distributions of categories and visualization scores, estimate the proportions of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) and overall malignancy in the US-3 category, and identify variables associated with the VIS-C score by conducting a meta-analysis.

Perineuronal nets (PNNs) are specialised extracellular matrix structures of the central nervous system that predominantly surround inhibitory interneurons. The development of PNNs is activity dependent and relies on sensory input to mature to an adult expression pattern, coinciding with the crysallization of synaptic circuitry following the closure of the developmental critical period. Our results of a neocortical characterisation demonstrate that the density of PNNs in the neocortex of the Long Evans rat was consistent across animals but varied as a function of the cortical region.
