Advancing durable solutions for carbon storage and removal at the gigaton scale to produce solid carbonates carbon mineralization requires harnessing earth abundant magnesium silicate resources. Calibrated insights linking the structural and morphological features of earth abundant amorphous and crystalline magnesium silicate phases to their reactivity are essential for scalable deployment but remain underdeveloped. To resolve the influence of silica coordination and mass transfer on carbon mineralization behavior, magnesium silicates bearing amorphous and crystalline phases (AC Mg-silicate) are synthesized.

Impact of commercial RNA extraction methods on the recovery of human RNA sequence data from archival fixed tissues.

Archival fixed tissues hold key insights into the evolutionary history of RNA viruses and the associated host immune response, yet access to the RNA sequence data is limited by a lack of robust methods for RNA extraction and sequence retrieval from these tissue types. Here we compared three commercial RNA extraction techniques (bead, column, and phase-based) on five fixed human brain tissues done in triplicate, that have been stored for up to 43 years. We found that for this sample set, bead-based extractions captured longer molecules and yielded a greater proportion of unique reads when aligned to the human genome, than did column and phase-based extraction methods.

Medicaid Home and Community Based Services Spending and Nursing Home Use by Individuals Under the Age of 44.

Prior studies of the role of state spending on home and community-based services (HCBS) in nursing home use focused on adults over the age of 65. However, medically complex children and adults under 50 years old represent a small (about 5%) but highly vulnerable subset of nursing home patients. We measured the impact of HCBS spending on short-term and long-term nursing home stays by children and adults under 44 years old and compared the impact between Non-Hispanic White (NHW) individuals and Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC).

Battery-free head orientation measurement using passive RFID tags.

Real-time measurement of head rotation, a primary human body movement, offers potential advantages in rehabilitating head or neck motor disorders, promoting seamless human-robot interaction, and tracking the lateral glance of children with autism spectrum disorder for effective intervention. However, existing options such as cameras capturing the entire face or skin-attached sensors have limitations concerning privacy, safety, and/or usability. This research introduces a novel method that employs a battery-free RFID tag-based wearable sensor for monitoring head orientation, as a substitute for the existing options like camera.

Novel device therapies in heart failure: focus on patient selection.

The increasing prevalence of heart failure (HF) has led to advancements in therapeutic strategies, including the development of new pharmacological treatments and the expansion of guideline recommendations across the spectrum of left ventricular ejection fractions. Despite these advancements, the full benefits of guideline-directed medical therapy (GDMT) are often limited by various barriers that result in incomplete implementation or suboptimal responses. For patients who cannot tolerate or only partially respond to GDMT, therapeutic options remain limited.

Consensus statement on the prevention, diagnosis, and management of infection following transcutaneous osseointegration for patients with limb loss: current state-of-the-art and proposed future studies.

The diagnosis, risk factors, treatment algorithms, and long-term sequelae of superficial and deep, implant-related infections in transdermal, bone-anchored osseointegration are not well-defined. In contrast to the robust experience diagnosing and managing periprosthetic joint infections in total joint arthroplasty, osseointegration surgery has only recently been adopted at a small number of osseointegration centers in the United States, contributing to the lack of long-term outcomes. Through the pooled experience from these osseointegration centers, we present a consensus statement on the perioperative management, incidence, treatment, and diagnostic workup for infectious complications following transdermal, bone-anchored osseointegration.

Consensus statement on prehabilitation and rehabilitation of osseointegration patients.

Rehabilitation protocols vary according to the osseointegration (OI) implant system and the institutions implanting bone-anchored limbs (BALs). While there are limited peer-reviewed OI publications quantifying details for optimizing surgical candidacy and rehabilitation protocols to ensure support across the BAL spectrum, the authors recommend a multidisciplinary team approach over the user's lifetime. Breakout sessions at the Global Collaborative Congress on OI (GCCO) were convened around key topics, including rehabilitation.

Basic science review of transcutaneous osseointegration: current status, research gaps and needs, and defining future directions.

Basic science research is vital for advancing the emerging field of bone-anchored limb replacement (BALR), or osseointegration (OI). This article discusses clinical challenges for BALR/OI, summarizes current basic science research regarding those challenges, identifies research gaps, and proposes future directions. OI research draws from related fields such as orthopaedic implants and dentistry.

Retrobulbar/intraconal tube placement in patients with glaucoma: Ahmed FP-7 and tube extender case series with 1 year follow-up.

Purpose: The Ahmed FP-7 valve is useful in the management of refractory glaucoma. However, this can often have ocular hypertensive phase and subconjunctival fibrosis that can lead to increased medication use and failure. We report how retrobulbar and intraconal plate placement with tube extension can avoid the ocular hypertensive phase, lower intraocular pressure, and reduce medication burden.

Adverse events and contributing factors in Chinese nursing homes: a multisite cross-sectional study.

Background: Adverse events in nursing homes, which are unintended incidents causing unnecessary harm to older residents. Previous studies in Chinese populations often focused on adverse events in hospitals, rather than residents in nursing homes. Additionally, they tended to focus on single incident rather than multiple types of adverse events.

Ischaemic and bleeding risk after ST-elevation myocardial infarction in patients with active cancer: a nationwide study.

Aims: Treatment of patients with cancer presenting with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) is complex given the increased risk of both thrombotic and major bleeding complications.

Methods And Results: A nationally linked cohort of STEMI patients between January 2005 and March 2019 was obtained from the UK Myocardial Infarction National Audit Project and the UK National Hospital Episode Statistics Admitted Patient Care registries. The primary outcomes were major bleeding and re-infarction at 1 year following admission with STEMI.

Proposed research classification criteria for Lyme disease in infection associated chronic illness studies.

Background: Research on patients with persistent symptoms despite prior treatment for Lyme disease can be challenging to interpret given the diversity of criteria selected to characterize Lyme disease and to define the syndrome of those with persistent symptoms. Because most research studies only include patients with well-documented prior Lyme disease, the generalizability of the study results is limited, excluding the larger group of patients often seen in community practice who do not meet these stringent enrollment criteria. Researchers at the Lyme and other Tick-borne Diseases Clinical Trials Network (LTD-CTN) recognized early on that a research classification system was needed to facilitate the design of studies that are more inclusive.

Evidence of physiological changes associated with single-session pre-frontal tDCS: a pilot study.

Objective: Transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), a non-invasive, painless method of applying direct current electrical stimulation to specific areas of the brain, is an effective method for enhancing attention and post-stroke fatigue, as shown by behavioral improvements in post-stroke populations. While behavioral evidence supports this method, there is a paucity of physiological data corroboration of this improvement. The current study is designed to investigate if a single session of tDCS will improve attention and fatigue as shown by relevant physiological methods in persons with post-stroke aphasia.

Soft micropillar arrays enable detailed studies of cellular mechanotransduction and biomechanics using traditional beam-bending models. However, they often rely on simplified assumptions, leading to significant errors in force estimation. We present MechanoBioCAD (MBC), a finite element method (FEM)-based tool designed specifically for micropillar research and error estimation.

A Clinical, Morphologic, and Molecular Comparison of Bonafide Spitz Melanomas and ASTs in the Pediatric Population.

Pediatric Spitz melanoma (SM) with bonafide metastatic disease is rare. In this study, we assembled the largest cohort to date of pediatric SM with a verified Spitz-associated genomic driver and clinical follow-up demonstrating bonafide metastasis. We compared the clinical, morphologic, and molecular features of these SMs to a control cohort of 57 pediatric atypical Spitz tumors (ASTs).

Cutaneous Hemangioma With Epithelioid Features Harboring TPM3/4::ALK Fusions: A Distinct Entity or a Molecular Variant of Epithelioid Hemangioma?

Vascular neoplasms with epithelioid cytomorphology encompass a wide spectrum of benign and malignant lesions, including epithelioid hemangioma (EH), cutaneous epithelioid angiomatous nodule (CEAN), epithelioid hemangioendothelioma (EHE), and epithelioid angiosarcoma (EAS). Recently, the first case of a cutaneous hemangioma with epithelioid features harboring a TPM3::ALK fusion was reported. Herein, we report 4 additional cases, including 1 case with an alternate TPM4::ALK fusion, and expand on the clinicopathologic and molecular genetic features of these unusual vascular lesions.
